Best and Worst Coaches of Philippine Basketball

best coach - cone (pba style), jacobs (international game)

worst coach - caidic (pba style), vergeire (international game)

let's see if toroman becomes the best coach to ever coach a filipino team...

i'll be creamed for this, but i think Joe Lipa has to be one of the worst. his 1986 championship with UP may have been because of the talent that he had, he didn't win a trophy in the PBA, though he had some success with Ateneo... his coaching staff was a mess and he didn't really trust his bench players (unlike Franz Pumaren and Aric del Rosario), and we all know what happened the last time he coached UP just a few years ago.

Perry Ronquillo has to be the best i've seen because he worked his way up from coaching elementary kids to coaching in the PBA. he never had the best players but he maximized what he had to win games. Cone and Uichico always had at least 3 or 4 superstars. Ronquillo had an aging Benjie Paras, Chris Jackson who only defends, a then-hyped young player in Castillo, the guy they traded Magsanoc for (Gerry Esplana), the guy who dunked on Kobe in a 3-on-3 game (Vic Pablo), and some guy named Jun Marzan... how they beat Tanduay in '99 with Alvarado and Menk was just a stroke of genius. Paras was the MVP.

Did he win any all-filipino conferences?

well championships is not just a mark of good coach isn't? I am not picking a fight here but give Yeng some slack, he did better than Chot in the final ranking right? its like you're bringing up another dead issue here:cool:

Agree, Perry Ronquillo. Those Shell players were never the same when he left. Victor Pablo's effectiveness relied very much on the plays designed for him and same for the rest of those guys. Unfortunately a lot of fanboys doesn't really know him very well because of Shell's limited popularity.

Joe Lipa on his later years might be, and how can we forget Perry Ronquillo :D

Ely was never a good coach, other than the 1991 All-filipino Crown, he replaced turo valenzona as tanduay coach back in 1987 3rd conference, and the rhum makers finished last, after leading Purefoods to its first all-filipino title, the hotdogs were booted out of the semifinals the next two conferences.

And his bold prediction of an easy series against Sarsi backfired, a careless statement along with his ruin-ins once with Nelson Asaytono during the first conference of the '91 season, Purefoods won a title under him because of the players and not because he was a good tactician.

from '88-'90, malakas ang line-up ng Purefoods but they lacked experience, against the teams they played in the finals, in '91 mas experience na Purefoods and its still a strong team, heavily-favored against Diet Sarsi but nearly fell into upset ax.

Ely Capacio was never a good coach. Sycophancy is what he is good at, probably the best in the PBA in what he does.

lol then mon fernandez, your idol it seems, could have led the hot dogs to its first ever pba title in its first conference because that team was one of the strongest in its franchise history.

What's so funny about it, for a new team, no one should expect a cinderella finish in its very first conference, but let's say Purefoods was an excemption in 1988 because they had a potented line up and not a few would be surprised if the team somehow won a championship in its first year, oh by the way they only lost by 2 points in Game 7, and what's so great about Ely Capacio, who, in four conferences he coach a team, three times he failed to lead his squad to the semifinals, better give more facts other than just posting.

point taken

you can equate Joe Lipa= Don Nelson

he may be a little rough but his system is one good foundation but it needs some refinement but he is a legendary amateur coach in uaap in pabl and asian games. siopao and bulaga:D:D

No fight...i just love a good debate.

CHot is better in terms of preparation...he was just unlucky as he was put in the group of death...but all the games were close...unlike the games where Yeng Guaio coached...the Powerade lost by a big margin...what did the Iranian coach said???.."the game was very easy..no problem at all"....that was a slap in the filipinos face.

but Mario Palma countered it in tianjin that the team played better than the last time around.

In tianjin in the games rp still in contention rp did not receive blowout losses. We just happy in the feel good wins in jones cup but also because of it it did not expose our weaknesses in tokushima boom were lucky Iran did not blow us out like china did and we did a lot f hand check fouls in that game but yeah

chot has the system that is ambitious it is for small ball what yeng implements is his system in the pba it is solid but cannot upset better teams.:D:D

okay boni :D

well, some would say he's an arrogant prick but accepting the NT coaching job to an aging team with limited international exposure and a small war chest (compared to chot's team), I would say he did what he can do. I would not discredit him for the best finish because he gave of the RP team after the last two decades in Fiba Asia.

The 2009 and 2007 Pilipinas and Iran teams are two different teams. For one, the one thing the 2007 Philippine NT had going for them was the element of surprise; the years when we were suspended from international competition somehow served to keep the opponents in the dark as to how Filipinos play. In that first-round game against Iran in 2007, I noticed that Kerby kept on going to one move -- driving strong to his right and finishing with a layup. The Iranians, despite the Jones Cup game before FIBA-Asia, failed to scout this.

Fast-forward to 2009: Iran had an NBA-savvy center in Haddadi and a lot of their players had improved under a continuous program. In contrast, the PBA decided to do away with Chot Reyes and plugged Guiao into the head coaching job. Guiao actually had less time than Reyes to prepare, but were lucky enough to get assigned to a far easier group than in 2007. The Iran coaching staff most probably were able to scout and review game tapes from 2007 and rendered Raymundo ineffective, and were probably aided by Toroman's powers of observation (which was the reason Noli Eala hired Toroman to coach our NT).

My gut feel is that had the suspension not happened and Chot Reyes was able to implement his long-term program, we would've placed far better in 2007. Same with Guiao, though I don't agree with some of his lineup choices.

Jonar, regarding Eala's earlier statement, who's the Filipino coach that he says that will lead the Smart Gilas into the Olympics?

Can't remember who. What I do remember was Chot Reyes saying in a 2006 FHM interview that he was going to do his darned best to get us back into the Olympics. Of course, this was before the suspension axe fell.

That's correct. Norman Black was still the head coach of SLR at the time when they won the 2001 Governor's Cup at the expense of San Miguel Beer. Alfrancis Chua, though, was his assistant at the bench.

why alfrancis he is good ah I remember he got alvarado and a prime eric menk that time (it is like combining japhet and cs in one team) he master the so called 2 man game with jeffrey cariaso and rudy hatfield in the roster (dondon et al)even a high schooler should bring tanduay to championship

oh he is good to make excuses:D
