SEVEN teams have so far confirmed their participation in the International Basketball Federation (Fiba)-Asia Champions Cup in Doha, Qatar, next month.
Curiously, no team from the Philippines is on the list of the organizing Qatar Basketball Federation (QBF).
Rashid Al Abdullah, director of the event, told The Peninsula Online that their group is still in search of the three squads to complete the 10-team cast for the May 22 to 30 tournament in Doha.
“As of now, we have seven teams confirmed. The other three teams will be known shortly. The three teams could be from Kazakhstan, India, China, Philippines or Korea,” Al Abdullah was quoted in Qatar’s leading English online paper.
The seven teams are defending champion Mahram Tehran, Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia, Al Nasr of the United Arab Emirates, Iraq’s The Hawk, Al Riyadi of Lebanon, Syria’s Al Jalal and Al Rayyan, which will represent the hosts.
The BusinessMirror could not reach Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) executive director Noli Eala. The Smart Gilas team was supposed to be on the list.
The Philippine Patriots of coach Louie Alas is also supposed to be on the roster for winning the inaugural Asean Basketball League. But like Gilas, the Patriots are not on the list.
Al Abdullah said the 10 teams will be divided into two groups with the top four from each group advancing to the next round.
Smart Gilas, then backstopped by CJ Giles, finished fifth in the Champions Cup in Jakarta last year.
The team is currently in Serbia for a six-game, 10-day training and will proceed to Vancouver, Canada, for another series of tune-up games.
Gilas team manager Frankie Lim said the team is now searching for an import because their original choice, Dwayne Jones, was signed by Phoenix Suns in the National Basketball Association.
Besides the Champions Cup, Gilas is also preparing for the Asian Games in Guangzhou, China, in November.
