Kazemi Named to C-USA All-Freshman Team

Rookie averaging 10.4 points, 9 rebounds

March 9, 2010

IRVING - Rice University's Arsalan Kazemi has been named to the 2010 Conference USA All-Freshman Team the league office announced on Tuesday.

Kazemi joins 2009-10 Freshman of the Year Hassan Whiteside of Marshall along with UCF's Keith Clanton and Marcus Jordan as well as Tulane's Kendall Timmons.

Kazemi enters this week's GMC Sierra Conference USA Championship averaging 10.4 points and 9.0 rebounds for the season. With 26 blocks, Kazemi moves onto the all-time season list and is tied for 10th with Tony Barnett who also had 26 blocks during the 1983-84 season.

His 260 total rebounds is already a Rice freshman record and with two boards in the Owls' first-round game against Tulsa, would move onto to the Top 10 for single season rebounds at Rice.

The last time a freshman led Rice in either scoring or rebounding was the 2001-02 season when Michael Harris led the Owls in both categories - 12.8 points and 8.6 rebounds per game.

With nine double-doubles, Kazemi can move onto the Top 10 list with one more similar performance.

The native of Esfahan, Iran, also had 45 steals this season. Last week against UCF he had seven steals. The Rice single-game record for steals is eight.

Kazemi and the Owls open play at the Conference USA Championship against tournament host Tulsa Wednesday at 6 p.m. The tournament is being played at Tulsa's new downtown arena, the BOK Center.

me too, japeth is taller and had wider span while arsalan got speed and agility..

'anyway did you see that arsalan clip, do you think his opponent dead on 0:22 :p

I wish Rabeh is as fast as Kazemi.

If Kazemi plays for Iran, their front court will be bigger and they will have another post threat.

he is like reincarnation of the other bahrami..
aidin bahrami(+)..
he is just more hustling than aidin..

what i like with kazemi is he is so focused in the game..his awareness is great.
"may angas ang laro"

i cant wait to see him spar with our big guys..
it will be great to watch.

more and more match up problems for Gilas

more and more match up problems for Gilas

I've read in the Iranian threads that they are looking for home growns to play for their RP team...that's where I've learned that Andre Agassi is also half Iraninan.I look forward to see Kazemi to play in the Iran senior squad soon.I guess he would bring problems to Gilas considering that we lack tall players in the small forward spot.Jeremy Lin in another Asian guy who is making waves in the US college hoops scene.

The Persian Double-Double. I like to see him match up with Japeth Aguilar.

Although Aguilar is taller, longer limbed and more athletic I think this guy has more solid back to the basket skills. He's more fundamentally sound too.I guess if Al-Husseini would lose more weight and be more mobile then maybe e could do a good job defending this kid While Japeth would wait and swat any lay ups from the kid.

yep.japeths best asset is his cat quick aerial help defense.
japeth is effective in guarding if his man doesnt have contact with him..for sure he'll swat those shots..

Hall of Fame coach Lenny Wilkens has been recruited by South Korea to help prepare their team for this year's Asian Games in Guangzhou.

The 72-year-old was inducted into the Hall of Fame both as a player and a coach and set the record for the most coaching wins in the NBA with 1,332 victories.

Don Nelson of the Golden State Warriors tied that record on Sunday.

"We reached a settlement with Wilkens in cooperation with the U.S. National Basketball Association (NBA)," the committee that runs the South Korean team told the Yonhap news agency.

South Korea won gold on home soil at the 2002 Asian Games but finished fifth in Qatar four years ago. The 16th Asian Games take place in southern China from November 12-27.

i don't know if this is a good thing for korea. this just confirms our suspicions that korean basketball has gone NBAish...

they would be a better team with a european coach, imo.
