Last year, when Gilas was in their coach's land of birth, they played teams like vujic metalac, bc beograd, partizan, kk vizura and mega juniors. Their record was 2-3 last year. Hoping for a much tougher competition against the Serbian teams they'll be facing. The team is leaving for Serbia on sunday.

Smart Gilas leaves for Serbia on Sunday

by Ronnie Nathanielsz | insidesports.ph

The Smart Gilas national team which returned home from a rewarding stint in Australia where they won five of their six games and drew in a rematch with the Australian Institute of Sports gets another acid test in a tournament in Serbia where they also competed last year.

Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas executive director Noli Eala who was with the team during the Australian series said coach Rajko Toroman will have a chance to find out whether the team has really improved when he measures their performance in Serbia this time around using last year’s tournament as a benchmark.

Eala said the team will play a minimum of six games in ten days after which they will fly to the United States on April 23 on a nine-day stint in Las Vegas.

Following the Las Vegas series the Smart Gilas squad will leave for Vancouver, Canada on a five-day trip.

Eala said that top guard Chris Lutz will join the nationals in the US following his graduation.

Discussing the Australian tour where Smart Gilas beat the Australian Under 19 squad 78-67, the Australian Institute of Sports 79-73 before a 73-73 tie in the rematch, the Canberra Gunners 79-73, NSW Institute of Sports 82-63, and the Sydney Comets 93-81, Eala said “everybody played well” and the team had truly improved.

He cited lanky Japeth Aguilar’s impressive performance in the team’s final game against their toughest opponents the Sydney Comets as a most welcome development. Aguilar had a fantastic game scoring 29 points, pulling down 10 rebounds for a welcome double-double and also issuing 1assist, blocking 2 shots and pulling off 4 steals, effectively providing coach Toroman and the Smart Gilas leadership an idea of what he is truly capable of.

While Eala didn’t wish to cite any particular players he said Greg Slaughter’s game had improved greatly. Slaughter had consistent numbers in terms of points, rebounds and shot blocks in every game and played hard just like every other member of the team.

I'm happy that the boys are doing very well. Aguilar is finally getting his confidence and it's huge boost if he continues his stellar play. I just want everybody to improve and be healthy when the Asiad starts:D

Do you know the details about where and when the games are gonna be played?
It would be interesting to check it out...
(and to see the team that is the cause of thousands of posts here on IBN:D)

We are clueless to be honest with you. With the Serbian league currently ongoing, which clubs do you think would be willing to play a visiting foreign team in a friendly match?

Those thousand post threads are most likely brought about by the excitement of having some sort of senior NT program after decades of not having one.

lol we might be able to find out if one of the players of the team posts the location on his twitter.

How's the WC-bound Serbian team? Are they playing any games before the world championships?

Except Partizan (which is playing Euroleague QF), other big Serbian teams have a mini preparation period. The league is to start in a week or two, so it's perfect timing for Smart Gilas... In an article from two days ago it is said that Crvena Zvezda (Red Star) will play a few friendly games during that preparation time, but no other information about the games (the mentioned article in Serbian)...

Now you've made me feel guilty for what I've said...:(
Just joking, good luck in the future!

They probably are (they will play some international tournaments), but only after the season ends in all the leagues...

Thanks for the encouragement! Hopefully foreign trips like this one can make up for all the lost time as we need a lot of catching up to do.

Funny thing, because I came here to find out some info. I didn't find anything on Serbian websites (not much of a surprise, cause we have just a few sites dedicated to bball, and they mostly follow only a few leagues and tournaments).

Actually, the only useful info I found was on Chris Tiu's blog:D
So, I'm pretty sure you guys read it too...

I'll be sure to tell you if I see something in the Serbian media.

Before coming here to Serbia, we played Talk and Text for an exhibition game and beat them by 20 points. We felt that we were improving, but when we played here... it was just a wake up call and a realization on the level of basketball internationally.

from tiu's blog...

they lost by 30 points against a tall and experienced team..
they could have just lost by 25 points if they played well..
they could have lost by 20 points if they had a complete lineup
they could have lost by 15 points if they had an import

this is the competition that gilas needs...

more hard work to do but at least they are on the right way...
