angola actually came here in 2003 or 2004 as part of their preparations for d 2003 fiba-africa or 2004 olympics (forgot which is which but i think more of d former).

they played d bap-rp team then.

they never came back lol:o

Maybe the PBA can help the Phil. team prepare by hosting some sort of an invitational cup.

i think its better to keep the line up intact. those guys are Philippine's basketball heroes . They deserve to be in Gilas Roster

OT : Going back on with FIBA eligibility of players nationality it seems the FIBA Africa governing body is very lenient with Nigerian national team. If you look a closer view, 10 of their current players were born in USA and some of them (I counted 5 US-born players) in this current FIBA Africa Champs is their debut in national team. Please view and scrutinize this link : http://abidjan2013.fibaafrica.com/index.php/en/teams?ident=340&group=D

I strongly believe many of these US born players did not received their Nigerian passports before the age of 16.

Methinks, if Nigeria qualifies for FIBA World Cup in Spain next year, field same palyers and won't encounter eligibility questions from FIBA World will make me wonder the double standards exists in this matter.

Chot wants three-month Gilas preparation for Fiba-World Cup
By Snow Badua

NATIONAL coach Chot Reyes wants Gilas Pilipinas to have at least a three-month preparation as it gears up for the 2014 Fiba-World Cup in Spain.

“At least, three months (ang ideal) syempre. Dati ganun rin hiningi ko (for the Fiba-Asia Championship), pero nabigyan lang tayo ng two months,” Reyes told Spin.ph.

Reyes stressed everything will depend on what the PBA board will approve as far as the length of the team’s preparation for the Spain showpiece is concerned.

“Kung ilang buwan ang gustong ibigay ng PBA, depende sa kanila yan. It depends on what schedule the PBA can accommodate (for Gilas),” he added.

As it is, Asia’s pioneering pro league had to cram its schedule for the season-ending Governors Cup as it gave way to both the preparation of Gilas Pilipinas and the country’s hosting of the 27th edition of the Fiba-Asia tilt.

In the next three weeks, the league will be having 13 playdates in 22 days to complete the elimination round of the season-ending conference.

But to better prepare the calendar for the first Philippine team to compete in the world championship in 37 years, Reyes said he’s now in constant touch with Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) president Manny V. Pangilinan.

“Nag-uusap na kami (ni Boss MVP), pero very sketchy pa (ang details sa ngayon),” said Reyes, who bared he has no scheduled meeting with the league board as of the moment regarding the matter.

At the same time, the only five-time winner of the coveted PBA Coach of the Year award said he’s giving members of Gilas team to focus on their obligations with their mother ball clubs.

“Matagal pa, next year pa yun. Busy pa mga players ngayon with their mother teams. Hindi magandang guluhin ang isip nila?” said Reyes.

Likewise, the national coach bared he is not closing the door on possible new names that might be included in the current 13-man Gilas team.

“Never naman natin sinara ang pool. Pero it will depend ulit on the PBA kung magpapahiram ulit sila ng players nila,” he said, stressing that he will complete a team for the Fiba-World Cup regardless of who will be available.

“I have a team, kung sino ang gustong pumasok, hindi ko alam. Kailangan pa muna naming mag-usap ng PBA,” said Reyes, an eight-time champion coach in the PBA.

Negotations 101 by Chot Reyes

Ask for 3 months.
PBA say, NO 3 weeks lang!
Chot tweets: #ParasaBayan....
Public reacts, #^*%^%^%*%^*! PBA! Pumayag na kayo FIBA Worlds to!
SBP - PBA revives talks...
... settles for...

3 months + 3 weeks / 2 (or the so-called compromise) =

2 months! (Chot laughtrip sa corner ng PBA office thinking, "yun naman lang talaga gusto ko.")

Philippines Senior National Team Thread

I took note of the suggestions made in the long term national thread and decided that it's best to create separate threads for the senior team and the cadet/developmental team to avoid the redundancy some of you guys have mentioned. The "backread" rule must be observed as posted in the Message to Newcomers (also applies to senior members :p) for the same reason. The 23rd volume of the SBP Long Term National Pool Thread will also be the last.

Now please let's get back to talking about basketball.

Should be in Philippine NT thread..

I think they played against one of the PBL teams too... but I could be wrong that was a long time ago...

They played a series of exhibition games vs. Filipino teams. One of them was vs. the 2003 SEA Games-bound Cebuan Lhuillier-Philippine team composed of the likes of James Yap, Garry David, Ranidel Deocampo, among others. If I'm not mistaken, Angola beat RP by around 10 pts. The coach of Angola was a bit impressed with James Yap, saying James was a good shooter.

wasn't it Mario Palma who coached Angola at that time?
Mario Palma is also the former coach of Jordan national team 2007-2009.

I think you are correct. Palma was Angola's coach before his stint with Jordan.

it is important for us to send a very strong team, probably the strongest team for the World Cup.. remember that we are on the good side of FIBA.. FIBA World loves us and is really supportive of us.. and they are really aware that SBP (which they help create tremendously) was created for the sole purpose to go back to the World stage.. and then all of a sudden they will see a development team in the Worlds.. sasama tingin sa atin nyan..

so there.. SBP should really create a sound plan and coordinate patiently with all concerning parties to have a strong team next year.. probably just 1 or 2 replacements from the silver medal team then that's it..

I hope the Cadet squad will be given the chance to play in the ASIAN GAMES..... we can assume this as their WORLD CUP version (in terms of level of competition).
Just imagine, in the last FIBA ASIA QUALIFIER, we defeated a Korean NT which had 6 college players, and we had a hard time defeating them. We need to make our college players get up to speed, or our rivals China, and Korea will slowly get ahead of us in terms of level of play (because they are bringing in players as young as college players [Kim Min-Go] and even an 18 yr. old kid [Gou Ay Lin of China, if I am correct].

SEABA, FIBA CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP CUP and ASIAN GAMES are the important tournaments for development of our Gilas Cadet Squads.
The FIBA ASIA QUALIFIER, FIBA ASIA CUP & Jones Cup are the major tournaments that our seniors team should focus on. In this way, we will be able to slowly develop and strengthen our players.

In SEABA, we can have [Kuya] Marcus as our naturalized. For the FIBA CLUB Championship, we can have a Memorandum of Understanding that the Gilas Cadet has the right to challenge the ABL Pinoy Champion team to a best of 3 game for the right to represent the country in the FIBA CLUB Championship. Of course the Pinoy ABL team can use their two imports but the Cadets can only have their naturalized player. this will be a win-win situation for both teams. The Cadets will get to have a tough competition against the ABL team because it not only have two imports, it has pro-players in them. For the ABL team, they get to have a good training/ practice before competing in the main competition. (Of course, I expect the Cadet squad to lose because not only will the ABL team have two imports, it has PBA players in it as part of the team. Definitely, It has higher level of play than the cadets.)
Then, as for the ASIAN GAMES, We can have the Cadets backed by three PBA players, who were part of the Gilas program, but is not part of the Gilas Seniors lineup. In this way, We strengthen the Cadet Squad... PBA scheduling won't be affected much... and we get to widen the selection of players for the Seniors team because more PBA players will have experience in international play.

well, this is just my suggestion and hopefully, will be given some consideration.

I hope, we can have a friendly game with the Great Britain and Italian Teams & National Teams. We have so many Filipinos in both countries so I think, as for the organizers of this friendly, it will not be a lose-lose situation, financially.

Hope someone can make this happen for our Gilas National Team :)

BTW Great Britain is not so great when hosting and orgnaising basketball tournaments :)

On the other hand their loss could be Gilas gain , as we might have something to offer them to bring international basketball back to Britain :)
