My take on this is there might be another person in Gilas who does not value/need/want MD as much as others are. IMO MD is good for the NT. Low Key, Down to Earth and very Coachable and skill wise he is up there. But based on what I have seen and I am basing this on the said circumstances and ,what insinuation the others are saying here based on what the team physician said, is Chot Reyes is not entirely fond of MD or does not value him as much, and is contrary to what he says. I say this due to the ff instances based on my view only:
a. DDO system does not need a skilled big man to work thus not needing MD that much. and if you notice the 1st 3 or 4 games during the tourney, Chot relied on his DDO offense a lot and did not set plays for MD to use his advantage especially on the post. It is only during after the lost to CT I think that MD was able to establish and be given post up plays. You can see this in the box scores of the games. I also noticed in some instances MD's frustration in the lack of touches that he got during the 1st 3 games and at times was late in going back on defense due to a teammates poor shot, but even with the situation he did not say or do anything which is a good thing coming from him.
b. MD is not Chot's choice, it was Rajko who chose MD to be our naturalized player. If you noticed during the 2011 games that MD was the leading scorers of the Gilas team and imho should've been in the Mythical 5 since he had an edge already over Haddadi whose Iran team was already eliminated during the quarters. (is there also a rule in fiba that a Naturalized Player cannot win personal awards?) He suited Rajko's system or Rajko centered his system on MD, any which way it was a success imho.
As per others are saying that MD did fake his injury, I doubt it, I know he is being paid a good amount by the SBP/MVP and wouldn't risk losing his job over this kind of thing. Also based on my humble experience playing basketball, getting kneed in any part of your leg would hurt and not only for that day but would last a couple of days before the pain would go subside. It was clear from the replays that he got kneed/bumped by a knee of the opponent and those things really do hurt. they usually would entail a bruise. them playing almost every day also did not help.
Fact: Douthit dont like Chot Reyes. Douthit even demanded before that he will only play for Gilas again if Franz Pumaren will be part of the coaching staff.
