'Ninoy' stadium facelift goes full blast as Fiba-Asia nears

THE Philippine Sports Commission said on Monday that the Ninoy Aquino Stadium will be ready for the Fiba-Asia Championship where it will serve as the secondary venue.

PSC chairman Ricardo Garcia said refurbishing work on the stadium is going full blast and should be finished well ahead of the start of the tournament on August 1.

“We are going full blast in our preparation for Ninoy Aquino Stadium,” said Garcia during his weekly press briefing on Monday. “We will put Ninoy in tip-top shape.”

“The venue will be ready for (the) Fiba-Asia,” Garcia added.

The PSC-maintained stadium has passed Fiba-Asia standards to be the secondary venue after the Mall of Asia Arena and has since been undergoing major renovation work.

It will most likely serve as the venue for a few preliminary games, none involving the top-tier teams.

Garcia said that a new scoreboard will be installed in the next few days while the locker rooms are being refurbished. The stadium will also be given a fresh coat of paint.

The New Zealand national men’s basketball team will hold trials for its final 12 spots on Tuesday and Wednesday, ahead of its scheduled closed-door matchup with the Philippines.

The Tall Blacks have named 19 players to try out for the team. Leading the pool are Lindsay Tait, Frank Casey, Jarrod Kenny, Alex Pledger, Everard Bartlett, Josh Bloxham, and Jeremiah Trueman, holdovers of the New Zealand team that played in the 2012 London Olympics.

Also in the pool are Corey Webster, BJ Anthony, Nick Horvath, Jordan Ngatai, Dion Prewster, Brook Ruscoe, Jack Salt, Reuben Te Rangi, Thomas Vodanovich, Mika Vukona, Marco Alexander, and Brad Anderson.

Star swingman Tom Abercrombie, who is currently playing for the Phoenix Suns’ NBA Summer League team in Las Vegas, is expected to be named to the final squad despite missing the camp.

The SMART-Gilas Pilipinas national team is scheduled to play the Tall Blacks on Thursday.

“By the 18th, when Gilas plays them, the final 12 players, Abercrombie included, will be named,” said David Perez, the Filipino based in New Zealand who helped organize the Philippie team’s training tour in the country.

Even though the Tall Blacks squad coached by Serbian Nenad Vucinic have only recently assembled, they are expected to possess ample chemistry, according to Perez.

“It is important to note that three of the likely starters — 7-foot center Pledger, likely starting power forward Vukona, and shooting guard Corey Webster have been together with the New Zealand Breakers for the last three years,” said Perez.

Abercrombie also plays for the Breakers, the three-time defending champion of Australasia’s National Basketball League.

“Also, three of the expected starters are from the Wellington Saints — backcourt Tait and Webster and athletic forward/naturalized player Casey Frank,” added Perez.

“So I think this team will have a resemblance of a system even if they just started camp.”

The Philippines is currently in the midst of a tour in New Zealand as part of its final buildup for the FIBA Asia Championship in August. The team swept its series against club team Hawkes Bay Hawks last week before falling to an all-star selection from New Zealand’s National Basketball League.

Gilas will play the Wellington Saints on Tuesday before taking on the South City Rangers on Wednesday. The Philippine team wraps up its tour with a showdown with the Tall Blacks, the 18th-placed national team in the FIBA rankings.

A friend of a friend asked to record it and offered to give US$1k for each game I make for my effort. If gilas has 6 games in NZ that means i'll be getting 6k in a matter of days. Not bad. He's from Taiwan.

Youll be just like a Makapili during Japanese occupation. But im sure you wont betray your countrymen :)

They can always ban the use of video cameras in the venue.

I know people still have phones but at least they can't record the whole game properly on their phones.
