UAAP Season 76 Discussion Thread

Lol I am too young to think about my future children LOL..

Imo still there are advantages being in a school like La Salle Ateneo or UP if you are very lucky but UST is no slouch and never been one but you have to be serious in studying as you compete with ten thousand graduates every year.. after all this 5'10 guards would not gamble their good future with 2 ,3 ytears of pro and semi pro league careers...as you can still ball your way in your inter company leagues..:cool:

And to the fact that lets face it it is not joke the compensation the rich schools give to their players and we all knew UST can't give that.. Batricevic do have a business once he left playing for La Salle..

SBC, AHS and even ADC/SHS in Cebu produce lots of good guards but for some reason none of them considered UST as an option. Outside of Fortuna, the Zobel boys also did not consider UST even though they will not make DLSU or ADMU varsity. Even Sumang when he was in Letran ended up in UE after he failed the acads of the top UAAP schools. My point is, UST is no longer a destination school for players even from the provinces. FEU has done a masterful job of recruiting players from the Visayas. The Pampanga connection has moved on to other schools. Adamson is in the same boat as UST but Leo Austria has done a nice job recruiting transfer players from other college leagues.

The performance of UST high school in the UAAP this past few years has not helped. Outside of Ferrer, no player has made their mark for the varsity college team. This year, they will once again fail to make the final 4. NU and FEU has won the last 2 UAAP junior championship by bringing in tons of players from the provinces and other parts of Manila. I understand that the NU B high school team is strong enough to make the high school final 4 with or without their Cameroonian import.

None of us can blame "Eleven" or other recruits for turning their backs on UST and accepting the golden handcuffs from SM. The problem becomes acute when family concerns must be considered in the decision making. In essence, the players became the bread winner for the family. UST should do a better job of tapping their alumni network for assistance in recruiting players.

I pose this question, how many of UST's student-athletes especially their high profile basketball superstars actually finish and earn their college degrees?

Most of them, some of them are even engineers, I remember Udoy Belmonte who is now a pilot. He is part of the glory days of UST, headed by Espino, Evangelista, David, etc. Most of UST players finished there degree. Well if they are looking for less pressure courses for athlete well they can take up Education, or HRM or Commerce. For UST , they play for pride and they don't feel like commercial team players.

Meanwhile the player of the week

From twitter

@JoeySVillar: ACCEL/3XVI UAAP Press Corps Player of the Week: FEU's Terrence Romeo! @philcycletweets #UAAPSeason76

No in game analysis by nico salva during the 2OT game between UE and FEU :p

should have given it to Jason Perkins.
19 points on 70% shooting from the field and 16 rebounds against UP
18 points on 53% shooting from the field and 13 rebounds against FEU

BOTH WINS

against Romeo's
30 points on 37% shooting from the field and 7 rebounds
12 points on 22% shooting from the field and 5 rebounds

1 win 1 loss

I was also expecting Perkins to be the player of the week. . . but maybe his 30point game sounds more interesting than a consistent player. :) Or they just need more media mileage :)

Baka they were using a simple formula to determine the player of the week honor:

30+12 > 18+19

Wont be surprised, there computation for the mythical team is so flawed. They dont count field goal shooting to the equation.

Question is not who but lets say in a lineup of 16, how many would go the length and graduate. Same with other schools.

all athletes graduate...actually it's the basketball players who sort of "slack" pa nga e because they have a lot of tourneys but when it counts they have to study still and earn their marks in class. tata bautista was cut from team A last year due to academic deficiencies, vigil also wanted to focus on his studies first this year among others...almost every year, someone from the team A volleyball team suffers the same fate. and in UST, should an athlete deserve debarment then it's goodbye.

ababou was actually a dean's lister in college. Karim Abdul does not like missing class...he gets pissed if he is asked to do so...that's why he just shifted from eng to commerce since the sched there is more flexible. all in all, i can say with a straight face that UST players are the most "student-athlete-ish" in the whole UAAP. you can ask the students if they see them attending class and taking exams.

Bachelor in Sports Science

Question here is if your child is not good enough to reach or lets say last long in the PBA .... what is his fall back. the very least I think as a PE Teacher if he does take schooling seriously and graduate.

pe and lo are taking up engineering (very daunting in ust standards), karim used to be in com sci but shifted to commerce, ferrer aljon and tata are commerce students. sports science is a Rehab Science course but is NOT the default course for student athletes, this is actually a specialty course in UST since it is aligned with PT and OT so it is not given to just anyone, they are mostly studying commerce since that is the most flexible course, 4 hrs a day per class which are either AM, MID or PM sked.

wrong, the UAAP should limit what a recruit can get. Basic package for all student athletes...only what they need to study, train and compete. it's about values really...the alumni are willing to support but the powers at be do not want handing out unnecessary benefits to the students. Is UST suffering because they put values ahead of winning? a UAAP finals appearance and PCCL title can answer that. that's why Pido has done a masterful job in recruitment...yes UST is not a top destination because of the flimsy benefits but is still competitive every year. 4-5 and a 3 game losing streak is sketchy but is still in contention so don't count the tigers out yet for this year.

as what yoga said, because of their benefits not being lucrative they play with pride and heart more than just their pockets.

Who doesn't want a balanced and fair recruitment and athletic benefits for the UAAP?

Assuming UST is really that "clean" when it comes to the recruitment and treatment of their student athletes, what it does is truly admirable and praiseworthy. Unfortunately the UAAP isn't a place for the righteous. If you still haven't noticed, it's a theater of war where each team is out for their own glory; at the expense of others or conniving with the enemy whenever necessary just to get the most favorable outcome.

It's just as downright dirty as politics and like politics (let's just start with the PDAF scandal), winning at all costs involves almost everyone and is already part of the culture. It's so deep rooted only a revolution or dictatorial rule can put an end to it. If you can't stop these government officials, what more the UAAP? A private entity. Who will do the check and balance? It's like asking the senators to conduct a check and balance among themselves.

Unless the CHED and PSC comes up with a governing body that will regularize collegiate sports, don't expect recruitment to be fair any time soon. And even if such a body exists, what's to stop the rich schools from influencing this body?

The Pingoy-Mbala hullaballoo pretty much exposed the realities of the UAAP and how powerless the righteous parties are. More than anything else, the "policies" of the UAAP is really just a give and take between a bunch of hypocritic and selfish crabs who simply want to win and go home with the bragging rights. Survival of the fittest. It's as simple as that.

UNIVERSITY of the East stars Charles Mammie and Lord Casajeros are set to be meted with two-game suspensions by the UAAP Commissioner's Office with two important games coming up for the Red Warriors.

According to league sources, Commissioner Chito Loyzaga decided to ban Mammie and Casajeros following a video review of separate incidents involving Far Eastern University star Terrence Romeo during Sunday's match which the Tamaraws won in double overtime, 98-94.

Mammie was suspended for a second time by the league for a play that saw Romeo land on his foot while taking a three-point shot early in the fourth quarter, aggravating an ankle injury he sustained in practice.

It will be the second suspension slapped on the 6-7 UE center, who was hit with a one-game ban for "confronting, pushing, and kicking” Adamson’s Roider Cabrera in a scuffle that occurred after the Red Warriors lost to the Falcons, 71-78, last July 11.

(For full story, see UE's Mammie hit with one-game ban for attack on Falcon Cabrera)

Casajeros, who was given a warning during that same game against Adamson for a skirmish with Cabrera, was banned after he was caught on video throwing a closed fist at Romeo, the source added.

The suspensions on the UE duo are just two of several sanctions and warnings Loyzaga is set announce tomorrow, the source said.

The ban on Mammie and Casajeros also comes at a bad time for the Warriors as they are scheduled to take on title contenders National University on Saturday and De La Salle on September 4.

Mammie is the league’s leading rebounder this season with his 18.6 average for the Warriors, including a season-high 27 against the Tamaraws last Sunday.

Mammie had already been penalized with a one-game suspension by the league in the first round.

For his part, Casajeros is averaging 6.4 points per game and is regarded as the top defensive stopper of the team.

true, not that it would happen anytime soon but hopefully someday...

Really painful for UE. They might be looking at a 3 game losing streak.
