The final score was Sporting Aramex (Jordan) 75 - 65 Smart Gilas
Tough luck for Smart Gilas!

Smart Gilas ended up in 3rd place and will play against Sagesse from Lebanon in the quarterfinals... Quarterfinals are to be played on Wednesday.... Timings haven't been posted as of yet but i'm assuming Smart Gilas' game like usual will be at 9 p.m (UAE time), 1 a.m Philippines time.

Thanks for the update. I can sleep now. :D

Smart gilas vs sagesse for the right to entry in the semifinals on wednesday.

There are things more important than "winning"

Despite of the loss to the Jordanians, I'm still very satisfied of the performance of our boys in this game. At least, this game was a close one unlike our game vs. Al Ahli where we lost via rout. Prior to this tournament, people weren't really expecting much from Smart Gilas. In fact coach Chot even was quoted to have said that his boys might be beaten black & blue considering the composition (a mixture of inexperienced amateurs & less heralded pros.) and the minimal preparation of the team, as well as the type of opposition this team would face in the tournament (imagine the top pro teams in the Middle East with up to 3 imports each).

Winning against Mouttahed, lossing to host team Al Ahli by 15 pts. & losing to Sporting Al Riyadi of Jordan in a close match isn't bad for this youth laden & inexperienced Gilas team. Anyway, the main purpose of this team in joining this tournament isn't really to win. It's about gaining experience. I think Smart Gilas is achieving it's main objective in Dubai.

Imagine the valuable experience that young amateur cagers like Kevin Alas, RR Garcia, Garvo Lanete, Ronald Pascual, & Matt Ganuellas being ranged against the likes of Rony Fahed, Erick Chatfield, Alpha Bangura, Dorsey & several players in the Middle East. The level of competition in Dubai is something that these Filipino young amateurs couldn't get while playing in the PBA DLeague or in the UAAP or NCAA.

Appreciate you loyalty to the national team. Regardless of who is in the roster..

Melton is nursing a hamstring hurt 3 days before he tournament. So dont judge when u dont know whats going on. He shouldnt really be playing now but he showing heart and doing what the team asks of him. He is sacrificing for the sake of Gilas NT.

I we appreciate the effort but injured or not he always have chances to redeem himself maybe not these tournament or the next tournament..But we had to realize that a lot of aspiring basketball players in te country are guards.. If they are given the opportunity to play abroad just like melton who knows they might become the next great guard of our country. He must not waste his chance....

Yes, learning is the most important thing right now. I admit our chances against one of the favorites in this tournament in the QFs are slim, but I hope this would be a good learning experience playing against a powerful team like Sagesse.

It'll be a good opportunity for Coach Chot and the team to see first hand how really good is this player.

i am not disappointed for the NT losses in Dubai this guys are learning and gaining experience for future competitions.

Wiki says he played for AU NT? does that mean we can now use are own half-breeds?

Based on Wikipedia, he's actually Australian. He just plays in the Lebanese league.

If he really played for the AU NT, then I think he won't be allowed to play for the Lebanon NT even as a naturalized player.

Correction: He's Lebanese but born and raised in Australia. So for sure he won't be eligible. Just like our Fil-Am's that didn't get their Filipino passport before turning 16 (or 18?) years old.

I saw a glimpse of his game in FLB. He's not really the explosive type of a player. Not really a big scorer but I think he's a perfect role player. This guy has a size of a center (about 6 foot 10) & has the mobility of a natural power forward. I think he epitomizes the big man of international basketball.

I think one of his parents is Lebanese.

But the Lebanese claim he's eligible. They say Kazzouh has proof that he laid claim of his Lebanese citizenship before he turned 16 years old, which I doubt very much.

Perhaps our friend Khalid could shed as some light on these matters?

a. Is Fadi El Khatib playing in August?
b. Is Ahmad Ibrahim as good as advertised?
c. Is Khazzou eligible as a local player?
d. Will you be fielding a naturalized player?
e. If answer are all yes, Lebanon will compete for the gold
