Avenge us!

Before we start going gaga over the win, let' not forget that Powerade barely used any kind of plays last game. No doubt I was impressed with what Toroman did to this team, but Gilas needed to win more than Powerade. If Gilas lost, people would really question the entire system and even the entire program. Let's not get carried away with the win, the team still has a lot of work ahead but with time, money, and chemistry; I believe they can be contenders in nest year's Asiad.

One thing I noticed about Gilas is its reliance on American import Giles. I think that if Powerade sent Giles to early foul trouble, there's no way that the bigs of Gilas can handle the likes of Taulava, Thoss, or even De Ocampo. Sure Aguilar is there but we know very well that he's not a very physical defender. Any team that would scout Gilas can simply attack Giles and the entire team can be picked apart from then on. It's still a great win nonetheless but I would love to see these young guys challenge the likes of Iran, China, Lebanon, and Jordan.

To Powerade, PBA Backed National Team:
Thanks for the effort in trying to restore Philippine Glory in FIBA. I salute your placings in every international tournament you participated.
1990 silver medal Asian Games
1994 4th place finish Asian Games
1998 bronze medal finish Asian Games
2002 4th place finish Asian Games (we had korea that game)
2007 9th place finish FIBA Asia (we lost close games in the "group of death)
2009 8th place finish FIBA Asia (I believe you could finish 5th or 6th)

I don't hate the PBA for what it represents.

To SBP Backed Smart Gilas
I am excited with the team's potential
They ran plays to perfection
Shot the ball well
You guys are made for the international games
I didn't give a damn when you were in college..now I do..
Bring Back international Glory to the country!:)

did you even read my previous post? Of course I respect their opinion and I love how Gilas handled the Powerade team. My point is, the team's win over Powerade should never be blown out of proportion. Yan ang mahirap e, when you constructively criticize; people tend to react negatively. I fully support Gilas but until I see them beat a legit contender in Asia, I won't be carried away.

I've been watching the teams that the Philippines has been sending in international competitions since 1990. For the first time since the 80s, we have a team that is really built for the international play. I just hope these guys can deliver because it really sucks to go back to drawing board once more

The PBA will live on. It will always be the most popular sports event in the country until the Olympics and the World Cup come over. If ever, it does show the pro loop's pitfalls. These millionaire players lacked the hustle, moxie, and fight despite all their experience. Do I believe that they would have won even if CJ Giles had fouled out? You have got to be kidding me. They would have still lost. I remember one sequence where Mac Baracael drove inside and got hammered. As the former FEU Tam was falling, he yelled, "Foul!" This wasn't the one where Kerby Raymundo was assessed a flagrant foul. It happened several plays before that. As Baracael got ready to shoot free throws, Raymundo and Wynne Arboleda exchanged looks and a few words. "Angas, ha." said Raymundo. And Arboleda had a look of contempt in his face. I thought that there was nothing wrong with what Mac said. Besides players whether in the pros or in the amateurs say that all the time during games. Obviously, they were frustrated and the beating had gotten in their minds. If you play the games or even just watch as an armchair general, you'd know the feeling of calling "foul." What that illustrated was that the young guns marched into their territory -- the Araneta Coliseum has long been the PBA's home -- and took it from them. But the ultimate lesson there was how flawed Powerade's line-up was. You can say that Mick Pennisi, Arwind Santos, Jayjay Helterbrand was missing. Er, so was Gilas that played without RJ Jazul, Rey Guevarra, and Greg Slaughter. And this team collectively practiced only once since many of them were coming of their college ball stints. The pro clubs practice periodically so saying they were not in shape is no excuse. They were ran to the ground plain and simple.

I agree that the team still has alot to improve on. But I disagree on the part the part about being overly reliant on Giles.

Sure, the Gilas team relies on Giles for rebounds and presence inside, but hardly do they strongly rely on him when it comes to offense. Not once did they isolate Giles despite the so many mismatch opportunities. The Gilas are using precise offensive plays that do no solely rely on one player despite his skills. It just so happens that Giles is always left open when they run the play. But never would you see them exclusively looking for Giles. Actually, there were alot of possessions where Giles didn't even touch the ball. Giles points usually come from backdoor screens and offensive rebounds. But that's mostly it. Of course, when Giles is left open in the play, they'll pass him the ball. But this also applies to other players that are left unguarded.

I also don't think that the likes of Asi and et al. could've dominated the paint had Giles fouled out. The other Gilas players (Ramos, Ballesteros) were doing a marvelous job in hussling for rebounds and defending the paint. When Toromon took out Giles in the latter part of the 3rd Q, the Gilas still outrebounded the Powerade team. And even the guards like Barocca had more rebounds than the Powerade big guys. It was plain hussle. :)

Again, it's the system that doesn't solely rely on one player and promotes team play that has made them successful in their win.

Point taken. Just like what Coach T said "Enjoy the win for a moment, tomorrow we go back to work" and "The win was good, but there is still a lot more to improve". I like the win by Gilas over Powerade, but the team is just roughly between 50-60% from reaching their full potential.

You are correct about the team's weakness on foul trouble of Giles. Japeth, Jason, Aldrich, Greg, and maybe Junmar will be developed and be able to reach their full potential to back CJ up.

By the way, welcome to the forum Gil!:D

I agree with everything you said. Gilas has the right system and players, with enough time; these guys are going to be tough to beat. Thanks Rensquared!:)

Again, it's the system that doesn't solely rely on one player and promotes team play that has made them successful in their win.

Back in Fiba-Asia championship Smart Gilas defeated Kuwait 98- 93 without CJ Giles and Chris Tiu. Kuwait was reinforced by two imports.

With only pride to play for Kuwaiti league champions Al Qadsia showed a lot of guts and gumption in their final Group A game against Smart Gilas.

But as has been their wont in the tournament so far, Smart Gilas, despite playing without of two of their key players rallied in the fourth quarter from a “confused” position to record a “confidence boosting” win.

“Their defense surprised us in the first two quarters,” said Smart Gilas coach Toroman Rajkov.

“And it took us time to rework our tactics, especially in the absence of Chris Tiu and CJ Giles,” he added.

“Even when I took the final time-out my message to the players was ‘we can either die like warriors or die like chickens.’ I’m proud my boys came out warriors,” Rajkov said.

Joseph Casio and Marnel Baracel led the Filipino charge. Baracel was 9/10 in field attempts in his 19 points and Casio had 21 points.

Yes, both teams were incomplete and really no decent practice to call. Yeah smart practiced but not without barroca, cawaling, ramos, ababou. Note that the 4 mentioned wrecked havoc monday. So no one should claim that powerade was a disadvantaged. And for one the powerade members have been practicing for the PBA AFC. So they are not out of shape. MOST importantly is that the powerade team was running the same plays they did in tianjin. I know because i followed all their games from game one. And for the argument that JJ, Arwind, Mick were not there. JJ is not cut for the int'l game, arwind is very incompetent in the int'l game, and mick is slow. So it would not have made any difference. NOW IF ALAPAG, RITUALO, Or HONTIVEROS played, that would have been a different story. maybe the score would have been closer. And GUIAO is NO MATCH FOR TOROMAN.

Were you watching the same game as all of us? Powerade was running the same plays or the absence of such that is typical of a Yeng Guiao coached team. Don't say that Gilas wanted to win more because Yeng and his team were played hard coz they didn't want to get embarrassed. Yeng Guiao also had something to prove against Toroman as he is his most vocal critic citing that Toroman doesnt bring anything new to the game. This game was his chance to prove that he was better. They took the game seriously but again Yen's team he failed miserably. Why - POOR COACHING!!!!!!!
Smart Gilas just took the game by force. Even with all the experience and physicality and replacement players in De Ocampo Arboleda and JR Reyes they still got massacred by a group of collegiate standouts committed to system of play that doesnt rely on one on one skill. Yes Smart Gilas still has lots of room to improve but they are already a cut above Yeng Guaio's poorly coached team. You might argue that Powerade did not practice or play with a complete lineup but Gilas were also incomplete. Aguilar, Ababou, Barroca, Ramos, Cawaling just recently came back to the team so it's not like they were practicing for months or were at 100%. Regarding the reliance on Giles I think Smart also intends to bring in 3 more players Husseini 6'7, Fajardo 6'9 and Slaughter 6'11 into the team. That will take care of the front court rotation. Like I said that Gilas team that made of PBA players look like overpaid underachieving part time athletes is not even the complete team yet.

well said

Like I said, let's wait and see. Until these guys start playing top teams in Asia, I'm not completely sold on them yet. I respect the fact that you're pretty high on these kids. Then again, they have never proven anything by beating a bunch of overpaid millionaires last time around. The real test would be next year's Asiad and if they still give teams out there the beatdown that Powerade received, then Gilas is the real deal.:)

Smart Gilas-My team Pilipinas

Smart Gilas-My team Pilipinas

Gilas has a difficult task ahead..If you ask me I'll be happy on whatever out come the team could accomplish simply because I've seen their sacrifice and hard work.Critics will be there (as usual) win or lose specially now that they have beaten the former RP team. The competition between the Powerade and Gilas is now over I just hope that Gilas would earn the respect and support they deserve.
