That "clause" you allude to is so easy to circumvent making it pretty much useless. It guarantees absolutely nothing. I still feel that suiting up for one's country must be a priveledge/responsibility that comes from one's own volition, not through force of contract stipulations.

Enrico Villanueva, foibles and all, seems to be the only one solidly associated with the SMC group with the cujones big enough to give Pogi Boy Noli a big F.U. to his face. It obviously doesn't bode well for him within the organization he plays for, but he's showing loud and clear that he's no one's lackey or puppet. It doesn't change the fact that his play still kinda sucks, but I commend him for going against the grain.

:p

ok, ok then the contract clause should read...ahem, "that he be allowed by (insert team name here) to join the NT when called upon"...so by that, it is still his choice if he wants to join but the mother team can't stop him from doing so...better? in fact, every PBA contract should state that starting with this year's draftees.
I'm pretty sure that if SMC did not want Rico to enlist in the NT then they would ask him not to..speaks volumes when they allowed him.

Yes and yes and more. Why are you acting surprised? We all knew this already. :)

Honestly DT, when it is indeed SMC's turn to churn out their version of the "National Team," I expect nothing ... I mean NOTHING less than an Olympic Gold Medal and a FIBA World Championship. With all their kayabangan antics and disrputive behaviour, anything less than that would be a failure of titanic proportions.

You better pray that your beloved RSA/Eala tagteam can bring home the bacon. If not, I''ll keep on calling you Pogi Boy Eala's butt b/tch forever.

:p lolz

DT oh :P pilyong husband got a point.

but i do believe that a combination from both of them and rajko at the helm can give us success

"Allowed" him? What are they gonna do? Physically stop him from doing what he wants? Scare him that they would unilaterally rescind his existing contract? The last time I checked [I come from a family of lawyers btw], that's against the law [oblicon]. The best threat they could throw at him is maybe when his present contract ends, they wouldn't re-sign him [which probably scared the living crap out of Yap, Pingris, Arwind, et el].

The way I see it, Enrico probably didn't give a flying fvck, and decided to do what he wanted anyway despite the probable dagger stares from his higher ups.

Maybe you forgot that in 2007 when Enrico was traded away when attended the practices of the San Miguel sponsored National Team without the approval of the then Photokina owned Red Bull.

Enrico can very much say to SMC Management in 2007 I prioritized the National Team when you are the sponsors, so what is now the difference with the team now sponsored by MVP.

Is Red Bull getting a fair shake in Villanueva trade?
By rey bancod
May 30, 2007, 8:00am

The real reason behind the trade of Enrico Villanueva to San Miguel Beer has been shrouded in mystery when it became known that his team Red Bull will be getting Romel Adducul, a player who is in the twilight of his career.

Villanueva, who could be Red Bull’s franchise player, was dealt to the Beermen officially yesterday after weeks of speculation regarding his future.

The Red Bull team said in statement yesterday that Villanueva was being shipped to San Miguel because management "learned he was no longer happy playing with us."

Though unhappiness is a significant factor in most trades, there was no indication prior to this development that the one-time Ateneo star wanted to leave the organization.

Red Bull even indicated that it doesn’t want to release the player to the national team because he was an important part of the team’s title drive.

That Villanueva still wanted to stay on as a Red Bull was indicated by a person close to the player who said he doesn’t believe Villanueva wanted to be traded.

He, however, agreed with the observation that Villanueva’s desire to play for the national team may have led to his eventual departure.

"What probably precipitated the trade was Villanueva’s commitment with the national team," the source said.

Red Bull, which drafted him out of Ateneo four years ago, yesterday confirmed reports that Villanueva has been traded. His trade was made public in an announcement made by PBA Commissioner Noli Eala Monday in Thailand.

The Bulletin tried to get in touch with Villanueva to ask for his reaction but the calls were not immediately returned. The player was scheduled to arrive yesterday from Thialand where he played for the national team in the SEABA tournament.

"He (Villanueva) is definitely a big loss to Red Bull, but his absence is not going to prevent management, coaching staff and players from pursuing our desire to give our best and win in every game," the statement read.

Since Rudy Hatfield begged off, Villanueva has been religiously attending national team practices.

Red Bull may have felt that it could no longer get 100 percent commitment from Villanueva, thus the trade, the source explained.

Curiously, the Bulls were 3-0 without Villanueva.

"Rico (Villanueva) is an important part of the team. He has made tremendous improvement and even became best player of the conference. He has helped us many times, but Red Bull has also helped him achieve his present form," said Red Bull coach Yeng Guiao.

Trading marquee players is not new for the Energy Food & Drinks franchise.

Among the players Red Bull has done away with in the past include Kerby Raymundo, Willie Miller and Lordy Tugade.

The Bulls have won three conference titles and placed second twice in eight seasons.

"Red Bull will remain in the same fierce, competitive team it has always been as we open a new chapter in our exciting, colorful campaign in the PBA," the statement concluded.

Villanueva’s transfer in exchange for Adducul, however, raised a few eyebrows since the trade is too one-sided in favor of San Miguel which will be getting a player whose game is in ascendance while Red Bull will be having one whose best years are over.

"They are not saying it but I guess a lot of money changed hands in that trade," said a high-ranking PBA official who requested not to be identified for fear he might be misunderstood.

He said giving up Villanueva for Adducul is almost laughable unless the Red Bull management is getting something substantial in return.

Great article Nardy. So I guess we really can say that Enrico , historically, has always never given a flying fvck to the wishes of his higher ups.

How sure are we that he declared his wealth correctly? Unfortunately Big Businessmen are not required to submit their SALN? Do you think he'll be willing to have a waiver on the secrecy of his Foreign Currency Accounts?

I wonder what happened to the wealth of the Late Tan Yu as in 1997, Forbes estimated his net worth to be about $7 billion, ranking him as one of the top 10 on the Forbes rich list. Where are his daughters, Dr. Emilia "Bien-Bien" Roxas-Yang and Elena Tanyu-Coyiuto and his other 3 children.

Haha. Well, coming for you-- a bitch from/for both camps-- it'd be a some sort of honor. You're sort of the combination of both camps persona anyway, your lack of balls comes from one side and your fake arrogance comes from the other.:

speculate all you want but this is the most factual list from forbes that we can use.. for arguments sake.. so this makes MVP special since Henry Sy, Lucio Tan and all are in this list and MVP isn't? com'n what i am trying to say is that MVP is generous no matter what angle you see it..

Wow ... the claws come out after some jovial ribbing. Rather harsh wouldn't you say? Did I hurt your feelings or bruise your ego?

Sheesh ... lighten up. Ang pikon talo mate.

Anyways ... go Petron?

Rico rocked the PBA that time as it forced the PBA to change its rules on Restricted Trade List. Mick Pennissi mysteriously took Villanueva's place in the RTL. This created protests from other teams as the RTL was supposed to make parity among the teams. This placed then Commissioner Noli Eala on the spot.

Villanueva, Fonacier shipped to San Miguel?
By WAYLON GALVEZ

SAN MIGUEL Corp. has initiated talks with Red Bull for a possible trade that would ship Enrico Villanueva and Larry Fonacier to the Beermen in exchange for veteran Romel Adducul.

Sources said Adducul himself asked for the trade after getting less playing time with the Beermen. Adducul, used to playing 25 minutes a game, averages 14 minutes a game this conference. His numbers also dipped — 3.6 points and 4 rebounds. This is not the first time Adducul has expressed his desire to leave.

Adducul also requested Barangay Ginebra to trade him during the Philippine Cup following the arrival of Rudy Hatfield and Rafi Reavis. After a few games, the Kings dealt Adducul to San Miguel Beer in a threeteam, three-player trade. But nothing concrete has come up so far, according to the source who asked not to be named.

"They’re still negotiating. Anything is possible," said the source who did not elaborate. The report could not be independently confirmed.

Calls to Red Bull team manager Tony Chua and San Miguel basketball operations chief Robert Non were not returned. Gee Abanilla, Red Bull’s interim coach, said he’s not aware of any negotiation, and doubted that it would succeed. "Coach Yeng (Guiao) will not favor such trade," said Abanilla who added that Fonacier attended practice yesterday.

Villanueva is currently playing for the San MiguelPhilippine team in the Asian Champions Cup in Tehran. The interest in Villanueva stems from the fact that he’s one of a handful of young big men in the league.

"Enrico is good for seven to eight years, that’s why teams are interested for his services," said a source close to Villanueva. Fonacier, on the other hand, is being lured because of his shooting skills.

Both Villanueva and Fonacier are former Ateneo Blue Eagles. Trading franchise players is not new for Red Bull. In 2003, the Bulls traded flashy guard Willie Miller to Talk ‘N Text, a year after the Olongapo native bagged the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award.

It’s not certain, however, if the trade would push through with the league’s new ruling known as the Restricted Trade List or RTL. Under the new setup, teams can only trade its franchise player to the other team’s franchise player.

The PBA Commissioner’s Office has listed Villanueva in the RTL, while San Miguel Beer has versatile wingman Danny Seigle on the list as well.

But SMC is serious on getting Villanueva. According to the source, San Miguel will only act as conduit, as the beverage and food conglomerate plans to add the former Ateneo star to Purefoods TJ Hotdogs.

Wow ... the claws come out after some jovial ribbing. Rather harsh wouldn't you say? Did I hurt your feelings or bruise your ego?

Sheesh ... lighten up. Ang pikon talo mate.

Ang unang pikon ang laging talo :)

Don't worry, i still think you're not one of 'em superfans though lately you've been acting like one. IBN will understand that you're just a little frustrated :)

And kelan naman ako napikon? And yes, I am a superfan ... not of either camp, but of basketball in general. That's why I try as best as possible to playfully deride both evil empires. I don't think it's a crime. I still cannot understand why the ouburst? Ganon ba kasakit ang nasabi ko?:D

So do I have to walk on eggshells now when I post here? Do I have to treat you with kid gloves when I post? Like I said earlier, lighten up man. It seems you take things too seriously.

Ikaw talaga ... masyado kang emosyonal ... ang puso mo. O, baka naman lalo ka pang maasar niyan.

Teeheee.
