In the NBA, Coaches that kills rookies confidence level or let them rot at the bench are Larry Brown, Rick Adelman, and many more....

In the PBA, one coach who runs in my mind will always be Chot Reyes.

He drafted guys like Abuda, Racela, Vince Hizon, Rodney Reyes, Richie Ticzon and others. Fortunately, these players came out and became stars if not stars, they had a significant role to their teams.

Abuda - Became the defense specialist for SMB.
Racela- everybody knows what he did for SMB except the missed freethrows in 2002 Asian games.
Rodney Reyes - Became a significant part of the 1996 Alask Grandslam team as well as for BGK in the mid 2k.
Richie Ticzon - He is also a dynamic scorer way back in Ateneo but languished at the bench under Reyes as well. However, his career recovered after being traded to Shell.

i agree it should be Tim Cone as #1.

The triangle is a hard craft to master even for veterans what more for rookies?

i'd be really surprised if Barroca continues to get minutes in this BMEG squad (even Urbiztondo is a better option, at least from Cone's perspective)

Am not sure with Chot because he had Jason Castro, right? Though Castro's game was very matured when he entered the PBA...

I don't have any knowledge about this topic. Just wanted to say that the title is kinda misleading.:p

Now that i've re-read it, you are absolutely correct :D

But hey, weird things happen in basketball, maybe there's an article somewhere where a rookie actually has killed his coach? :D

A hyphen between the words "rookie" and "killing" will make the title of this thread clearer.

I tend to agree with the observation regarding Tim Cone. Sure he had Eugene Quilban and Jeffrey Cariaso who were rookies of the year in 1991 and 1995. He also gave siginificant minutes to Don Allado when the latter was a rookie in 1999; to John Arigo in 2001 and to Mike Cortez and Brandon Cablay in 2003 But for every Quilban, Cariaso, Allado, Arigo, Cortezm and Cablay, look at this partial list of rookies who rotted in the bench under Tim Cone:

Aaaron Aban, Christian Luanzon, Kelvin dela Peña, Mark Kong, Migs Noble, Kenneth Bono, Mike Burtscher, Bernzon Franco, to mention a few.

Tim Cone as a rule relies on his veterans more.

For Me Tim Cone

See this
1. Elmer Espiritu - All around player offense and defense.
2. Ken Bono - 2006 UAAP MVP
3. JR Quinahan
4. Kelvin Dela Pena - NCAA MVP

Jason Castro played for Slingers before he joined the PBA. This is the Singapore Slingers (Sandrin, Harris, etc..) that played in the NBL, and not the Slingers that is playing today in the ABL today. So he has been against tougher competition when he joined the PBA.

True true, technically Castro was a rookie but indeed his game was very mature when he entered the PBA...

Tim Cone who are his exceptions Abbariento,s Cortez Cariaso Quilban Cablay and even Thoss these are all very good players..

the ones who rot the Kong's the Nobles the bench player..

Barroca is included in rotation of cone and produce as of its last game hopefully he is in the good side not on the "scrubs list":D

who is rodney reyes? or maybe your pointing to Rhodney Santos. FYI, santos was not part of alaska's 1996 grandslam because at that time he was still with purefoods. SAntos was traded to alaska before the start of the 1997 season in exchange for Cris Jumbo Bolado.

Not really but if you get Jimbo Aquino as an example, maybe he really is.. But under him, John Wilson and Rob Labagala emerged..

Any examples during his time in SMB? I can think of one: LA Tenorio.. Sam Eman was a bust to begin with..:p

I think it depends on the player who can adapt well in the Tim Cone triangle offense that's why looking at the players that blossomed when they're rookies and the players that ended up drilling holes in the bench using their butts, it seems that it's a 50/50 for Cone.

Also, Johnny Abarrientos started his career and won an MVP with Alaska. I noticed that you forgot to put him in your list. If I am not mistaken Poch Juinio also started with Alaska and became a significant player in their grandslam run in the 90s. So as Chris Bolado.

;)
