You know what's so shameful about this entire football is greater than basketball debacle going on in our country today? If only people here saw the support our OFWs give Gilas everytime they play abroad, they'd see why basketball is so special for Filipinos.

It's such a damn shame that the best home court advantage for Gilas is to go outside the Philippines. It feels more like home outside than inside this country. I can't believe I have to live through people spitting at the sport I love the most just because Cinderella team had some recent brush with success. What's going to happen when the Azkals lose? Are they going to quit on them too? It's a bunch of hogwash and bull crap.

while it's true that smart gilas doesnt have the glamour of the azkals, it's not entirely correct to conclude that gilas only gains homecourt advantage in countries with big pinoy population other than the philippines. how many basketball tourneys have gilas played at home? if fiba asia is to be held in the philippines then for sure the big dome cannot accommodate all the fans who will want to cheer for gilas. c'mon guys cheer up. football is a beautiful game, let's give it that. that's why filipinos in general are beginning to fall in love with it. but the philippines will always be a basketball country-it's our first love. qui prior est tempore, potior est jure. and i dont think a football victory over an asean powerhouse would be as sweet as a basketball victory over china, korea or iran.

i hate this to become another off topic football thread but..most of the fans support the askals not on the way they play..or because of the love of football but because of the poging players. If Gilas could have as much cute guys on the team then maybe they could gain the same amount of support

:)

I'm not saying we should not support football. I also like the game of football. It's a beautiful game where teamwork is the only way you will have a chance of winning. The passing and the "psychic" like connection from the players on the pitch is breath taking. Also, there is nothing like scoring a goal in front of your home fans. Just to watch the utter pandemonium that 1 goal can bring is chilling and satisfying.

With that said, though Gilas has only played a few games here in the Philippines, there is no support for the team. I watched the team last time in the PBA and there was almost no one supporting them. Heck, people wanted them to lose and even went as far as to insult Japeth (overrated) and Barroca (they called him benta).

I watched the Manila Invitational and the small Rizal Memorial Gym couldn't even be filled up. It was disheartening. Now I have to listen to people bash the sport I love with illogical and absurd reasoning. It makes me sick. No chance to succeed? That's a bunch of hogwash reasoning from Anti-Basketball pundits.

Basketball is also a beautiful game. If only people would take time to appreciate the intricacies of the game itself. The passing, the defense, the offense, the runs... They'd realize it's not overrated nor is it boring. It's just that we (Filipinos) have refused to open our eyes to the reality that the only way we can succeed and improve in basketball is to partake in the global initiative by FIBA.

It's time we encourage our players to play outside. Our basketball federation should be willing to sponsor talented basketball players and help them play in the US NCAA. We should compete in the global stage more often. We should not shun the opportunities.

And when did it ever have to be one or the other? Why should people choose between basketball and football? The proper thing would be to support development of both sports. More sports, more opportunities for our athletes. More chance at global recognition. It's even absurd that we are discussing basketball VS. football.

And to that piece of sh*t Ronnie Nathanielz. Get out of our country you bandwagon hopping, bad mouthing, stupid excuse of a sports journalist.

we need to get the likes of Mark Andaya, Calvin Abueva, Pari Llagas and JuneMar Fajardo to join Mark Barroca in GILAS as their "poging players". ;)

Which is why I can't help but compare today's scenario with what happened in the past when the PBA was all out in its support for the national team. San Miguel didn't have a problem getting the top players from all teams - whether Alaska (TDLC), TNT (Ritualo, Alapag, Taulava), SLR (Williams) or Red Bull (Pennisi). The core of course came from the SMC teams - Caguioa, Helterbrand and Menk from BGK, Hontiveros and Seigle from SMB and Raymundo from PF. Before that, the 2002 stint saw the PBA changing the rules and format to accommodate the national team, plus two sponsoring companies - Hapee Toothpaste and Selecta Ice Cream. Powerade also was given the same privilege although Yeng Guiao played it coyly by getting only a maximum of two players from one PBA team.

It could be a blessing in disguise as these TNT players are more familiar with Toroman's plays. They also apply that at their mother team. A De Ocampo and a Ryan Reyes may not be as explosive in offense as to a J-Wash - Yap tandem but they are better defensive players. We should scrap the "dream team" concept. SMC players won't be there. MVP teams have their star players anyway.

It's a good ploy for Pangilinan actually. His players experience in playing overseas. Tougher competition against bigger players make them better. An example is Greg Slaughter. He is a decent big for Gilas and imagine the impact he'll bring to Ateneo. Other Gilas players also have upped their stock. It's no secret that when they join the PBA draft, MVP would do everything to get them. And since they are bankrolling the National Team, their franchise, their brands can gain more following. They aren't in the level of the SMC teams yet but more people are beginning to cheer for these MVP teams because it supports the SBP, the NT. Royal Tru Orange/San Miguel was never as popular as Toyota or Crispa before. But after San Miguel got the core of the NCC team, that started the franchise's popularity.

I don't think Ranidel De Ocampo will be enough to stop some 6'9 power forwards from the other team.He may be tough but he's just another tough midget.Even Kelly Williams doesn't stand a chance.

That's why Greg and Japeth/Aldreach should still be there. At the center, you have Douthit, Taulava and Greg. That's a pretty solid center rotation. De Ocampo and Kelly can play either 3 or 4.

The good thing with Ranidel is that he has range. Can be used as a stretch 4 under Toroman's system(Baracael has this role). Mac can now slide to the 2 or 3.

Japeth and Aldrech have ways to go...they have to improve tremendously to become effective against the other bigs...not to mention they have to gain atleast 30 lbs of muscle to compete against NBA caliber players like,Vroman,Frejie,Yi Jian Lian and Iran's newest star Arsalan Kazemi.Ranidel would be to slow to be a small forward and Kelly should lose some weight and should improve his outside shooting to become a decent 3.A guy who has a built of Jay Washington could be a good post defender..someone who has the strength of Asi Taulava and the athleticism of Aguilar...but that's too far fetched.

any pics of him? :D:D:D

newbies please do refrain from off topic posts..if you want pics of your favorite frankie look alikes then you could start your own thread...if you like them that much then you should let them represent your own baranggay but not the RP team.

With Noli Eala going to be the Head of Basketball Operations of the San Miguel Group as per Firequinito, it looks now impossible that he would lend James Yap, Jay Washington and Arwind Santos to Frankie Lim at SMART GILAS.

Now in a way he is going to have a say on the formation of SMART GILAS being a voice at San Miguel.

So it is more likely that the PBA 5 Players for Philippine National Team for the Wuhan FIBA-Asia Championship would be:

6'8" 245 lbs. Pauliasi M. Taulava (Alias: "The Rock") born March 2, 1973 in California, USA (College: Brigham Young University-Hawaii Seasiders)

6'7" 220 lbs. Kelly Williams (Alias: "Machine Gun") born February 7, 1982 in Detroit, Michigan, USA (College: Oakland University-Michigan Golden Grizzlies)

6'5" 200 lbs. Ranidel Rozal de Ocampo (Alias: "The Mighty Man") born on December 8, 1981 in Tanza, Cavite, Philippines (College: Saint Francis of Assisi College System Doves)

6'2" 190 lbs. Ryan Jay Reyes (Alias: "The Energizer") born August 10, 1983 in Los Angeles, California, USA (College: California State University-Fullerton Titans)

5'9" 160 lbs. Jim Olmedo Alapag (Alias: "Mighty Mouse") born December 30, 1977 in Los Angeles, California, USA (College: California State University, San Bernardino Coyotes)
