NCAA Season 87 (2011-2012)

Why? What's the topic on this thread? Volleyball or basketball?

I never said that Baste has a policy on it's volleyball team not having imports. That's why each team has it's own team manager. Different set of rules.

And FYI most of the volleyball teams have imports. Don't act as if we set the standard of getting imports in volleyball. Basketball is a whole different story. Before when you haven't hired Sam Ekwe to play for your championship drought team, there were no imports in the collegiate basketball. But after that most of the teams thought that oh it worked for San Beda. Why not follow them and get an import so that we can increase our chances of winning. There you go! Thanks to your school we're now invaded by imports.

We're not like those teams. We're not that desperate to win.

We're happy and proud that our team is all-filipino. So don't mind us. That's our choice! We don't care even if you get a stockpile of imports. Just do your thing. It's fine for us! We can always scout for Filipinos who can match up with your imports. We don't care on what you're team wants to do. So don't meddle on our team's affairs.

That is just smart, ain't it? So baste implements a different kind of policy and a different set of rules for basketball and basketball alone? Nice... that's just genius!

When you guys banner the name "SEBASTINO" are you refering to just the basketball team or the whole ssc-r community?

Coz if you use it ONLY to tag the basketball team/program then by all means you do have the right to follow "it" with "ALL FILIPINO". If not, and if you guys collectively use it to refer to the whole sscr community then you guys are just... you complete the statement...

Second, San Beda did not "hire" Ekwe, he came to the philippines to study and become a priest. He wanted Benedictine education because their local priest was Benedictine.

Third, "there were no imports in the collegiate basketball" then what do you call Kirk Long? and the other foreign players La Salle banners? it would have been correct if you said in the NCAA... but collegiate basketball? That's just wrong...

Mods, sorry for diverting the topic a little... These arguments are just faulty and needs to be corrected...

I do not care if you want foreign imports in your schools or not. The more I do not care if you argue if it is right or wrong that there are foreign imports in the collegiate leagues.

But you better get your facts straighten out. Long before Sam Ekwe had left Nigeria to play for San Beda there are already foreigners that has played in our college leagues.

Anthony Williams, an American who was said to have studied medicine at FEU but is now He was the UAAP MVP in 1981, it was the time FEU dominated the league and had their own 3-peat from 1979-80 to 1981-82.

Somalia's Omar Ali suited for the University of the East in 1998 to 2000.

Then there was Brazil’s Robson Bornancin of the University of the Philippines.

in 2006 if I remember in right, University of Perpetual Help has Lee Sang Myeon of South Korea. A couple of years ago they also fielded an Indonesian in Ryan Febrian. They almost had a second Indonesian in 6'8" Isman Thoyib but he was ruled ineligible before the season as he played in a commercial team in his country.

Smith Jallah of Liberia played for PSBA-QC.

in the 1990's the brother of China's Ma Jian, Ma Ming was supposed to suit up for Ateneo.

There were talks that Chandler Donaldson who played for UST in its 1995 and 1996 UAAP title run is actually a full American and not a Fil-am as earlier thought off.

There might be others who I could no longer recall, one thing for sure Ekwe was not the first foreigner to play college basketball in the Philippines.

Actually I had a few sessions playing against Omar Ali in the late 90s (around 96 or 97). That time I did not know he was going to play for UE. But anyways, he played during my weekly basketball session (every wednesday 7PM to 9PM). He scrimmaged with us (together with some Bedans including the son of Oscar Rocha) for around 3 months along with several of his african friends. His christian name is Leevan or Livan. That's what we call him. He and his friends were staying at the nearby Horseshoe Village which was owned by an African national and his Filipina wife. The next time I saw him, to my surprise, he was guarding Don Allado in the UAAP.

Yes. Ali Liban was the name he used. But he was not that good. UE had needed him to fill the vacuum after Roel Buenaventura hastily left the Warriors. A very bad decision on his part, but that's another story.

That I don't know... But I guess the answer is yes. All I now is he was scouted by Lim in LA along with Rome DeLa Rosa. Probably he attended the try outs. If I'm not mistaken, the held a try out in LA (when they went there after winning the three-peat) when we won the championship back in season 84

He just showed up at an LA gym in 2008 (with Ginno Soliman) where the Red Lions were holding their summer training . Palay ang lumapit sa manok; tatanggi ka pa ba? :D (translation: it was Su who approached the Red Lions who never heard of him until he arrived at the gym)

Sudan was not scouted, he was a walk-in tryout together with Ginno Soliman when San Beda was training in Los Angeles that time a few year's ago. He was very raw and very young that time, he came from a very poor but big family as he has many brothers and sisters. He saw this as an opportunity to get a free education as he is not capable to get US NCAA Division I or even Division II invites.

Rome is a different story as he and his brother were making a name for themselves in the Fil-am basketball tournaments in California and Abe King, a former King Lion was a factor in convincing fellow PBA alumnus Romy de la Rosa to bring his sons to Manila for college. So Rome gone to San Beda and Ellison went to Mapua. Unfortunately while Rome was given the opportunity to shine in Mendiola, the Cardinals have not given Ellison the right exposure.

oh I didn't knw Su came from a poor family. Well at least he got a scholarship here, Idk what will happen next after graduating from San Beda.

You know those Ghetto type of places in LA. Su has dreams of getting his Mama and siblings out of there and unto a better place.

Su likes to stay here in the Philippines but surely he'll start a business like Sam has now in Nigeria.

In due time sir nards, in due time hopefully he'll have his chance to shine. I am also disappointed with the minutes given to Ellison.

I hate to ask this because I know you will just ask me to backread but I will ask it anyway, Who is that Ellison?:p

I believe he's the step brother of Rome Dela Rosa. Unfortunately for him, Lim picked Melo over Ellison Maniego to join SBC's Team A so that's the reason why Ellison went to Mapua. :D

Maniego is Rome's step brother. Both of them were supposed to play for the Red Lions last season however, Lim only wanted Rome to play for Team A and Maniego will be with Team B. Their mom sent a tape to Coach Vitolero and fortunately, was accepted.

OT: Banal, son of Coach Koy, was also supposed to play for the Red Lions, however due to his dad's "sacking" (apparently the Benedictines wanted a full time coach, thus Lim) decided to play for Mapua instead to avenge his dad.

Frankie was never part of the SBP, at that time he was appointed coach of San Beda, he was then the Talk N Text Team Manager but now he is no longer with TNT but with SMART as the Gilas Team Manager.

Well the difference between Frankie and Koy is that Frankie has a full-time loyalty to MVP as all the teams he is connected with is under the sphere of influence of MVP.

Koy on the other hand is employed by Purefoods, a company belonging to the San Miguel Group which is a fierce business rival of MVP's group. Both groups are battling for the businesses that controls the Philippine Economy. Its a matter of who are you loyal with. You cannot have 2 masters.

And of course it is an advantage for Frankie to be married to the niece of MVP.
