2011 SEAG National Team

I prefer that the SEAG team would hold an open tryout. no one should be a lock in the roster. making pool of 20 players or so would be beneficial because we nay not know what will happen in the coming months.

Black wants wider talent pool for RP SEA Games 5

MANILA—After stringing three straight UAAP championships for Ateneo, coach Norman Black hopes to bring his winning formula to the Southeast Asian Games.

“I know the Philippines has not lost in the SEA Games for a long, long time,” said Black. “I think it’s going to come down to getting the right players and the preparation going into the tournament.”

The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas recently tapped Black to call the shots for the RP team in the 2011 SEA Games in Indonesia.

For the first time, though, collegiate standouts will form the core of the national squad.

“I’m well aware of all the talents in the the college ranks right now,” said Black during the PSA Forum Tuesday at Shakey’s UN Avenue.

“What I would like to do, though, is also to take a look at the provinces. A lot of good players in the provinces—like Bacolod, Iloilo, Cebu—we don’t hear too much about them because they’re not here in Manila.”

Black cited Cebu’s 6-foot-9 standout Junmar Fajardo as a possible recruit, but he also hopes to have a coaching assistant in former Far Eastern U Tamaraws coach Glenn Capacio.

“I think there are a lot of good players who are transitioning from the college ranks to the pros who can probably help us,” Black said at the public sports program presented by Pagcor, Shakey’s and Outlast Battery.

“Maybe a guy like Fajardo can help us despite the fact that he’ll probably be getting ready for the pros at that time.”
Black, the American mentor who also won 10 PBA titles, already called the shots for the RP team in the 1994 Asian Games in Hiroshima, where the country finished fourth.

“The team should be chosen early, maybe during the summer,” he said.

Even the best college coach, Norman Black, acknowledges the talent of Junmar Fajardo. He had a ring side seat on the demolition job by Fajardo over his vaunted championship frontline of Al-Hussaini and Baclao last year that even prompted Toroman to push Smart Gilas to obtain Fajardo's services.

Would UC even be that competitive with Ateneo sans Fajardo ? Ateneo would have simply waylaid UC's defenses if not for Junmar. I really hope our SEA games team would have Junmar as the centerpiece.

Black to form RP five early for SEA Games PDF Print E-mail

MULTI-titled coach Norman Black plans to form the RP men’s basketball team for the 2011 Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia as early as possible.

Although he has yet to figure out the composition of the squad out to defend the basketball gold for the eighth straight time, Black said it is necessary that the nationals be given enough time to play together and become one cohesive unit prior to the 50th edition of the SEA Games in November next year.

Appearing in the PSA Forum at Shakey’s U.N. Avenue on Tuesday, Black admitted he has already accepted the coaching position offered to him by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP).

“The SBP asked me to coach the RP team to the SEA Games and I already said yes,” disclosed Black during the session presented by Outlast Battery, Shakey’s and PAGCOR.

But the American mentor fresh from steering the Ateneo Blue Eagles from a third straight UAAP men’s basketball championship added that as of yesterday, he haven’t discussed yet with the country’s governing body for basketball on how to go about the selection of players that will comprise the team.

“I haven’t talk about it with the SBP until now (yesterday). But we definitely have to go into training early. We have to chose and form the team early. And we have to do whatever is necessary if need be,” stressed the former versatile PBA import and third winningest coach in the history of Asia’s first ever play-for-pay league, including a rare Grandslam in 1989.

Ateneo did not play UC in that friendly tournament. Fajardo played for the CESAFI All stars.

Sorry bro, but I was talking about the exhibition match between Ateneo and UC last year right after Ateneo won their back-back championship.

You are probably referring to the recent game between San Miguel vs the CESAFI all stars organized by Don don hontiveros. I also read that in that game Fajardo toughed it out against the beermen's frontline and was able to score 17 pts highlighted by a two handed jam during the game.

Fajardo's performance against Norman Black's Ateneo team last year was even more stellar as he scored 21 points in total, had a double digit rebounding effort plus 4 key blocks on the Ateneo team including 3 clutch shot blocks (one on Ryan Buenafe - hero of this year's championship) down the stretch to preserve UC's win over the talented Ateneo team.

Smart Sports director Patrick Gregorio and Toroman were in Cebu to scout the 19-year-old Fajardo and were impressed by his performance against Ateneo in a mini-tournament last Monday. Fajardo led the CESAFI selection to a two-point win over the Blue Eagles as he finished with 25 points and 15 rebounds. In the last minute, he blocked Ryan Buenafe and Nonoy Baclao, grabbed a crucial rebound and converted crucial free throws. Ateneo led, 54-45, at the half

Cesafi selection to face Blue Eagles
By Marian C. Baring
Monday, June 1, 2009

THE top three teams in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) Partners Cup held last March—the Southwestern University (SWU), University of Cebu (UC) and University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R)—will unite to represent the Cesafi in the Friendship Cup on June 7 to 11 at the Cebu Coliseum.

The team will be facing the 2008 champion of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines, Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles, who will be fresh from their summer training in the US.

Aside from these two teams, also competing are the Cebu Landmasters and the Smart Pampanga Buddies of Liga Pilipinas.

Leading the Cesafi selection are SWU’s Alfred Belande, Ardd Evan Django, Eleazar Armecin, Ritchie Jalandoni and Rene Pacquiao.

The picks from UC are 6’9" center June Mar Fajardo, three-point master Moncrief Rogado, Jansen Abella, Edward Pao and Kevin Quilantang.

The players from USJ-R are Kurt Amores, Jerome Villaver, Edwin Bibera, Marvin Duran and Edmar Pateno.

Ateneo, on the other hand, will be led by UAAP MVP Rabeh Al-Hussaini, Rookie of the Year Ryan Buenafe, Kirk Long, Jai Reyes, Nonoy Baclao, Bacon Austria, Eric Salamat, Juami Tiongson, Zags Gonzaga, Nico Salva, Vince Burke, Mike Baldos, Justin Chua, Chris De Chavez, Frank Golla and Cebuano Christopher Sumalinog.

Although players from the eight-time champion University of the Visayas (UV) are not included in the Cesafi lineup, the Cebu Landmasters lineup is filled with former Green Lancers.

The Cebu Landmasters will be coached by Jun Tan.

Rino Berami, Ariel Mepana, Mark Abaon and Jayford Rodriguez lead the Landmasters with Alex Cainglet and former USJ-R player Luther Justiniani.

The teams will play a single round-robin with the top two squads advancing to the championship round, while the bottom two will fight for third place.

sbp should set the rules first

guys like Fajardo,Parks,Organ and Torres should be taken into consideration but before that, the SBP should set the rules on schools pirating players from other schools.

Agreed but this should not be limited to the SEAG team but to all other teams as well.

Put coaches who will have no other interests then the team itself. Alot of people crucified Franz for his recruiting when he handled the youth team but in some extent Eric was even more aggresive and moved all these players to NU.

In some forums Alex compton was mentioned and I think this would be a good Idea.

Just anybody who has no double agenda.

There should be a clause in the next NT coach that he should not be connected in any way to any other team or ballclub, be it in the collegiate leagues, amateur leagues, or the PBA.

coach ato could be a nominee since he's not handling any team right now.

wouldn't we be hard pressed to find someone who is not involved in any other team.don't get me wrong, i like the idea but the coach would be idle most of the time because his only work is with the national team. i don't know if there's a coach in this country that would agree to those kinds of terms. his salary should be high enough that he would not be tempted by schools or teams to jump ship.alex compton would be a nice start but probably we need someone who has more experience and a great communicator who can talk to these player's coaches and convince them that loaning a certain player would be good for our national interest. other coaches should've be able to trust him.

And of course, Black will be accused of recruiting this wider talent pool....

How about a young maverick coach with no ties as everybody suggested...

SEA Games, I think we'll be fine. Just exposure for the possible future national team members (Gilas if it would still be Gilas).

if the concern is sulutan blues, i suggest we recruit player that are either seniors or has already played out their eligibility.

Great way to scout players for Ateneo ;)

yeah they must pick players early next year to be more prepared against other asian opponents

Right, since the coach is already chosen. They should do that to avoid 'sulutan blues' and conflict of interest.

This could be a test of SBP's sincerity. They had s good start in forming Gilas. They should avoid being tainted.
