Palace aborts Douthit citizenship - 'not urgent'

By Marvin Sy (The Philippine Star) Updated October 14, 2010 12:00 AM
MANILA, Philippines - Congress yesterday failed to approve Marcus Douthit’s application for naturalization, keeping the 6-11 American from reinforcing the national cage team competing in next month’s Asian Games in Guangzhou, China.

Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri said that Malacañang has declined to certify as urgent the bill approving the naturalization of Douthit, which would have paved the way for the measure’s passage yesterday.

According to Zubiri, the Palace did not want to have as its first certified bill one that pertained to the naturalization application of an athlete.

Zubiri expressed his frustration about the Palace decision, putting to naught the joint effort by both the House of Representatives and the Senate to facilitate the naturalization of Douthit in a bid to strengthen the country’s bid in the quadrennial meet slated Nov. 12-28.

“We passed this for pride and glory. We in the Senate have done our job but they (Malacañang) didn’t want to certify their first bill as one of naturalization,” Zubiri said.

“I would like to share my frustrations with this fact and I hope that this government, will have an honest to goodness sports program and that’s (Douthit’s case) part and parcel of that sports program,” he said.

The Senate on Tuesday passed on second reading Senate Bill No. 2559 or the bill for the naturalization of Douthit a week after the House passed its version of the same bill.

In order to facilitate the passage of the bill in the Senate, the Palace only had to certify the bill as urgent.

Because of the failure of the Senate to pass the measure, the earliest possible date that it would be able to tackle Douthit’s naturalization would be on Nov. 8, which would already be too late for his inclusion in the RP roster for the Asiad.

Presuming that the Senate passes the bill on Nov. 7, it would have to be enrolled for signing of the President and then it must be published in two major dailies before it would become effective.

Thank you very much Senator Zubiri and Congressman Puno and the rest who suported the bill for Marcus Douthit, your effort and the rest of the people who supported this bill is enough to show how much you really care for our flag and country in the field of sports, It wont be forgotten and I'm sure a lot of people really appreciate this act from the congress to the senate. Mabuhay Po!

Even if Marcus Douthit will not make it to the Asian Games, I still think we have a very competitive national team. Our shooters should maintain their composure and confidence in taking those long shots even if there's no Douthit patrolling the board. All too often we hear analysts saying that a good rebounder makes for good shooting for other players in the team. Good thing we still have Asi in the team which is a good enough alternative for Douthit. Asi may be the slower player but he's more aggressive and has more experience.

The silver lining is that we are not laying down all cards yet and this may be most beneficial come Fiba Asia 2011. By 2011, the other Asian teams have not played a "complete" RP squad in a tournament. In fact, if SG insiders from the Ateneo clique, are to be believed, we may yet see the addition of around 2-3 players come August 2011 to further beef up the team. Banchero will be foremost in that list and perhaps Standhardinger. Douthit will be naturalized by then.

A four cornered "Chris" attack will be a formidable weapon for RP next year: Chris Tiu, Chris Lutz, Chris Banchero and Christian Standhardinger. Complement that with a Marcus Douthit, or an Asi Taulava at the center spot and there goes a very competitive RP tall team.

I won't pin my hopes that high.

Our 13-man lineup:

Tiu - 5'10
Barroca - 5'8
Casio - 5'10
Ababou - 6'5
Baracael - 6'4
Aguilar - 6'9
Ballesteros - 6'8
Slaughter - 6'11
Ramos - 6'7
Lassiter - 6'2
Lutz - 6'4
Mercado - 6'1
Williams - 6'7
Taulava - 6'9

*Correct me on the heights

It seems likely that Ababou will not make the final 12.

What do you guys think will be our combinations and rotations?

it's better to cut atleast 1 PG in this team.
4 players can play that position..
ababou can also be cut if he don't play with some motor or hassle.
