from the looks of it, they may had finished the 3rd reading too today and the senate approved it unanimously... now it's up for signing and then the accreditation... wow! didn't expect it to be this fast... have to give it to the senate especially sen. zubiri.

this seems to be the case. i hope so. and not just eala being too excited :D

for sure, even puno and sbp are surprised. if they expected this, they should have put marcus on the final 12 line-up.

yes. Great move by the senate! Looks like my fears were unfounded!!!!

So Happy!!!! hahaha!

i believe he was part of the 18-men line-up so i think its more of the asiad organizers allowing a change in the line-up which is the main concern.

Could you enlighten me on this matter?

Congrats to "Marcos Pagdudahan" anyway! :D  :D  :D  :D

if he has been naturalized and has a passport, i think the organizing committe would accredit him easier than mercado who has not been part of the initial 18-men line-up submitted to the asiad organizers.

im just thinking that inserting him (as well as mercado and lutz) in the final 12 to replace the others would be tougher as it is usually done during the team manager's meeting. well, who knows some of those managers might just bark at inserting a naturalized player at the last minute :D

It would be a tough decision indeed for the team managers. Displacing one or more players will always be difficult to do, especially if the player/s involved have been with the program since its inception.

It was easier back then with the NCC team. Danding Cojuangco had full grip with the country's basketball program and no one was capable of questioning him - not even BAP President Lito Puyat who could only lick his wounds for being a paper president. When certain players were removed from the program whether voluntarily or otherwise, (Ricardo Brown, Willie Pearson, Ricky Relosa, JV Yango, Frankie Lim, John Copada, Teddy Alfarero, Louie Brill, etc), or was dropped from the final roster (Naning Valenciano, Bong Ramos, Jun Tan, Jong Uichico) to give way to the naturalized players, no one complained. Or at least, no one knew that they were complaining. I think it was because Cojuangco was still paying for their salaries, and since Jacobs needed practice players to simulate the opposing team's players, the team normally had more than 12 players in its roster. And when the final reckoning is done by Coach Ron Jacobs, it was clearly understood among everyone that this decision was done for the best interest of everyone.

Of course, so long as the other players that will be dropped will still be receiving salaries even if they are dropped from the final 12-man roster, and granting that proper counseling will be given (or has been given) to them in case they're not taken in, then it shouldn't be a problem.

nope before the Senate considers the bill for 3rd reading, Malacanang must certify it as urgent and must be prioritized.

There is a number of bills ahead of Senate Bill 2559 and for it to be certified by malacanang would accelerate more the process and make sure it gets done this week.

I remember the only players that were vocal then were Joel Banal and Manny Victorino when they left Yango and Lim as the only homegrown players in the original Northern Cement Team that won the 1981 Jones Cup. That led them to turn Pro as no way they could get playing minutes having team mates like 6'5 Bruce Collins, 6'3 Jeff Moore, 6'0 Ricardo Brown, 6'2 Eddie Boy Chavez, 6'7 Dennis Still, 7'0 Steve Schall, 6'10 Steve Lingerfelter, 6'2 Willie Pearson, etc.

Do remember NCC did keep a 2nd team with the likes of Naning Valenciano, Alvin Teng, Jeffrey Graves and Al Solis. Could not remember the rest though. But now I realized that there must have been something was wrong as players like John Copada, Luis Brill and Richard Mendoza suddenly vanished from the basketball scene after being dropped from the teams of Cojuangco.

Best bets (in case Douthit's approved):

C - Douthit, Taulava, Slaughter
PF - Williams, Aguilar, Baracael
SF - Lutz, Lassiter
SG - Tiu, Mercado
PG - Barocca, Casio

Ave Height: approximately 6'3

i think this is almost a done deal... the remaining proceedings would just be a matter of formality that's why i wouldn't blame eala if he reacted with great enthusiasm :D

JR Cawaling quits Smart Gilas program

JR Cawaling has quit the Smart Gilas program to concentrate on his studies and help Far Eastern University (FEU) win the title next year in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP).

Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) executive director Noli Eala confirmed on Monday that the six-foot-three forward is leaving the national pool, adding that the move was perhaps due to the limited minutes he is expected to get with the entry of pros Asi Taulava, Kelly Williams and Solomon Mercado to the roster.

“Yes. He said he wants to concentrate on FEU next year,” said Eala told the BusinessMirror.

The SBP official admitted that he was saddened with Cawaling’s decision to leave the program but he cannot blame the player as Smart Gilas has started to accommodate professional players from the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) in its Asian Games campaign in Guangzhou, China.

Cawaling was not included in the 12-man lineup submitted by the SBP to the Guangzhou Asian Games Organizing Committee (Gagoc) for the event next month.

His FEU teammate, Aldrech Ramos, was part of the list but he could also be scratched if Gagoc approves the late accreditation of Mercado, Filipino-American Chris Lutz and naturalization candidate Marcus Douthit.

I guess JR feels he won’t have enough playing time to develop in the Smart Gilas team. The program was made to develop these young players. That’s why I’m sad,” Eala said.

Cawaling and the Tamaraws were swept by Ateneo in the best-of-three championship series of the UAAP men’s basketball tournament, 2-0.

It is also still unknown whether Cawaling will be penalized for quitting the program as these Smart Gilas players are all under contract with the SBP.

“I don’t know with the Smart Gilas management [if Cawaling will be fined]. But I can’t blame JR,” said Eala.

FEU athletic director Mark Molina said Cawaling has not informed the school regarding his decision to leave the Smart Gilas program.

Cawaling was the fourth member of the team to leave the program since it was formed early last year after Rabeh Al-Hussaini, RJ Jazul and Rey Guevarra who all applied for the Rookie Draft in August and are now playing in the PBA.

The others in the roster for the Asiad are JV Casio, Mark Barocca, Marnel Baracael, Greg Slaughter, Dylan Ababou, Aldrech Ramos, Marco Lassiter, Chris Tiu and Japeth Aguilar, a pro who is on loan to the national team. (above photo via tamarawbayan.com)
