Can someone tell me, what the hell is wrong with Saint Benilde? Why can't it get back to its old champion form. Its been what, 8 or 9 years since they got to teh championship. Since the departure of Sunday Salvacion, Al Magpayo, and the rest of the crew, Saint Benilde never got back on the winning track. So disappointing.

recruitment, alumni support...

recruitment, alumni support...

Recruitment? Yes, I dont see them getting blue chip players. Regarding the alumni support, yes I think I have to agree with that too. What I don't understand is, Saint Benilde has the money and facilities to be a great team. I just don't know why they aren't capitalizing in that part

And that game fixing issue.

This was when former St. Benilde Blazer Paolo Orbeta and two of his friends tried to blackmail/extort money from a fellow Benilde student. And in the process was caught red handed by NBI officials in the money exchange.

What a shame... a few hundred bucks or even thousand traded for your school and your own pride... not to mention career... I doubt a company will trust a guy like Orbeta... Oh well, let's hope his father is rich...

MIKE SILUNGAN KNOCKED IN 22 POINTS as University of the Philippines turned back a pesky Perpetual Help squad, 89-86, Saturday to clinch the second quarterfinal berth in the FilOil-Flying V First Five Invitational Cup.

The Maroons wrapped up their elimination campaign with a 5-2 record in Group A, just a week after the Ateneo Blue Eagles secured the first quarterfinal berth with a 6-1 slate.

Woody Co and Martin Reyes dropped 17 points apiece for the Maroons, who led by 10 at halftime, 44-34, at the FilOil-Flying V Arena in San Juan.

In the second match, Cameroonian Emmanuel Mbe blocked a potential-game winning basket as National University
slipped past Adamson, 67-65, for its first victory in four outings.

Mbe rejected Alex Nuyles’ three-point attempt just seconds after nailing a free throw that set the final count.

Jose Rizal University capped a day of thrillers with a 93-92 squeaker over University of the East.

Nchotu John Njei canned two free throws to give the Bombers a 93-90 buffer with 19.2 seconds left but Paul Lee made it a one-point game with two free throws.

Lee had a chance to win the game for the Warriors, but missed a desperation heave at the buzzer.

The Bombers hiked their record to 5-2 in Group B while the Falcons slipped to 3-2 in the tournament backed by Mighty Bond Extreme, Total Phils. Corp., San Marino Corned Tuna, Accel, Filoil Gas Company, Flying V and Hanesbrands.

Mbe finished with 24 points and Kokoy Hermosisima added 21 for the Bulldogs.

“I keep on emphasizing discipline,” said new NU coach Eric Gonzales. “I told my players that the more disciplined team will win the game.”

In juniors play, University of Santo Tomas downed UPIS, 97-91, in overtime while University of the East tripped Arellano, 86-81. With a report from Denison Rey A. Dalupang, Contributor

Well it all started when the Benilde sports management decided to concentrate in winning the overall NCAA title which made basketball least of their priority.

That makes sense! Come to think of it, Saint Benilde usually won the overall title when I was still studying there. Kaya pala nilalangaw ang basketball (Trans: nobody is watching the basketball games coz the team kept on losing. Pathetic!)

CSB will lean this season on carlo lastimosa's (nephew of jolas) scoring.

Make way for the new breed of Bulldogs.

National University displayed its new ferocious image to serve notice of its title hopes in the UAAP by stunning last year’s runner-up University of the East, 57-53, in the preseason tournament of the 2010 FilOil Flying V Invitational Cup at The Arena.

The Bulldogs banked on their solid defense that enabled them to break the game wide open early. They established leads as high as 16 points, the last time at 46-30, at the end of the third period.

"We are trying to develop into a top defensive team in the UAAP. That was our battle cry for this game," said coach Eric Gonzales, who took the reins from Manny Dandan.

After losing their first three games of the tournament, the Bulldogs improved their record to 2-3 and put UE in danger of its quarterfinals bid.

Jewel Ponferrada led the Bulldogs with 15 points while fellow holdovers Kokoy Hermosisima and Mervin Baloran added 12 and 11 points, apiece.

UE battled back into the contest and came to within two, 55-53, on a Paul Zamar basket with still 11.9 seconds remaining.

Zamar nearly completed his heroic act when he deflected an inbound pass and was able to save the ball into the hands of teammate Paul Lee.

But Lee, who struggled offensively, muffed a potential go-ahead trey before NU got the rebound to seal the win.

Zamar and James Martinez finished with 14 points each while Lee, hounded by the Bulldogs’ defense, was held to nine markers after a 34-point explosion against Jose Rizal University the last time around.

The Red Warriors finished their elimination round assignment with an even 4-4 card for fifth spot in Group B.

Ahead in the said group are early quarterfinalist Jose Rizal University (6-1), San Sebastian (4-1), Adamson (4-2) and defending champion Far Eastern University.

Adamson won earlier over College of Saint Benilde, 66-52, with Alex Nuyles and Eric Camson leading the way with 13 and 12 points each to hand the Blazers their fifth straight setback.

Chris Elopre played the hero's role in the dying seconds as Perpetual Help squeaked past Letran, 59-57, for the Altas’ first win in four tries.

Elopre drew a foul from Kevin Alas with 5.1 seconds left and broke a 57-all tie with two clutch free throws.

Former Altas point guard Franz Dysam had a chance to send the game into overtime but muffed a lay up try before the final horn.

Letran succumbed to its third straight defeat and fell to 1-4. - JVP/RCJ, GMANews.TV

Vidal, Altas humble Green Archers
by Celest Flores
497 Views | 16 Comments MAYBE it was a bad case of jet lag. Or perhaps, a different kind of “Jett” just couldn’t be stopped.

The hot-shooting Jett Vidal exploded for a game-high 26 points to help propel the University of Perpetual Help System Dalta to a rout of De La Salle University, 71-56 in the 2010 Filoil Flying V Tanduay First Five Invitational Cup at the Arena in San Juan City last May 21.

Vidal buried six three pointers, all in the first half, to help pad an Altas lead and keep the seemingly tired Green Archers at bay for the entire contest. The transferee from Philippine Christian University Dolphins capped off his stellar shooting feat with a contested left pocket triple with 3:36 remaining in the third quarter to open up a 55-33 cushion.

“He [Vidal] always does that in practice and I knew it’s only matter of time before he puts that on the court. I know his groove is coming back,” said Perpetual Help head coach and DLSU alum Boris Aldeguer.

Marlon Gomez, also a teammate of Vidal at PCU, contributed 12 markers in the win.

Perpetual Help was determined to put De La Salle away from the get-go, with the latter tasting its first and only lead only at 5-4 in the first quarter. Aldeguer’s squad, which won its second straight game, posted its biggest advantage at 25 points at the start of the fourth canto.

The Altas had no problems breaking the patented full court press of the Green Archers with slick and coordinated ball movement that led to easy baskets at the post. The win puts the Alabang-Zapote quintet at 2-3 in Group A play and boosts its chances of advancing to the knockout quarterfinal round. DLSU, meanwhile, fell to 3-2.

Joshua Webb was his energetic self, carrying the Green and White in a losing cause with 14 points in a solo endeavor that failed to draw solid support from his teammates on their first game back from after training in Chicago, Illinois, USA in preparation for the upcoming UAAP Season 73 campaign. Luigi dela Paz, a former player of Aldeguer at De La Salle-Zobel, was the only other Archer in double-figures, knocking down 10 points.

The scores:

Perpetual Help 71 – Vidal 26, Gomez 12, Danganan 10, Nuilan 6, Sumera 6, Elopre 5, Allen 4, Arboleda 2, Ynion 0, Kintanar 0.
