Pro league execs: Smart Gilas doesn’t need PBA reinforcement

Smart Gilas Pilipinas, a team which held its own against the powerhouse squads in the Asian region, doesn’t need reinforcement from the Philippine Basketball Association, according to top executives of the pro league.

PBA chairman Lito Alvarez assessed that the RP development team is just “one dominant big man away" from fulfilling its goal of making the London Olympics.

“What they need is just an American big man who can patrol the shaded lane and they’re ready to go," Alvarez told GMANews.TV. “Hindi na nila kakailanganin ang PBA players because the system is already in place."

Smart Gilas is currently shopping around for an American center to naturalize after parting ways with first prospects CJ Giles and Jamaal Sampson.

PBA Commissioner Sonny Barrios practically shared the same view as Alvarez, adding the possibility of disrupting the Gilas players’ chemistry with the infusion of a pro cager.

“Baka naman kasi kapag kumuha pa sila sa amin, eh imbes na makabuti, mapasama pa," said Barrios. “Kasi nga naman, their players have already sacrificed a lot tapos kung kukuha pa sila sa amin, baka sumama pa loob nila, notwithstanding the fact na baka makaapekto sa team chemistry nila."

Prior to the team's campaign in the Middle East, Smart-Gilas coach Rajko Toroman expressed his intentions to tap the likes of Kelly Williams of Sta. Lucia, Jared Dillinger of Talk 'N Text and Gabe Norwood of Rain or Shine as possible reinforcement for his young troop.

But Barrios thinks that Smart-Gilas’ strong third-place finish in the Dubai International basketball tournament could be the determining factor as to how the team’s program will go.

“It might also leave a bad impression to their players na nagsasakripisyo na nang matagal if ever they will include PBA players. Maybe yung request nila asking the PBA to beef up their squad was a few months ago, noong hindi pa sila sumasabak sa tournament sa Middle East. I think yung line of thinking nila is iba na at this time," Barrios said.

For Alvarez, he doesn’t believe that Smart Gilas is seriously asking for reinforcement, especially when the pro league has yet to receive a formal request from the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas. The PBA is a stakeholder in the SBP.

“I’d like to believe na publicity lang yun because the SBP has not furnished us a request. If ever they’re serious about it, then they should formalize their request,

Sta. Lucia protests pressure from SBP

Sta. Lucia protests pressure from SBP

Sta. Lucia Realty team PBA governor Buddy Encarnado said Monday he sympathizes with the plight of the Smart-Gilas national team but he questioned the way how the top executives of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) conveyed their message to the team regarding plans to recruit one of Sta. Lucia’s top players.

SBP executive director Noli Eala told reporters the other day that he and Gilas coach Rajko Toroman would like to have Realtor Kelly Williams to shore up the team when Gilas begins its international campaign this year.

According to Encarnado, while he understands the predicament of Gilas, he said that by coming out in public without formal discussion with them puts direct pressure on the team.

He said there are many things to consider before a deal can be made to allow the 6-foot-7 Williams to play for the national team.

“I will discuss this first with management and to Kelly. I want to know their (Gilas) schedule,” Encarnado said. “From there we can probably see kung pwede. We have to balance siyempre yung team and yung pagiging patriotic natin.”

While he is open to discussion he said that by going to the press, the team and management feel some pressure.

“I’ve never talked to him (Eala) or coach Toroman,” Encarnado told the Bulletin in a phone interview.

“They’re putting pressure on us. All off a sudden, here they are coming out in public. Ayoko man tingnan ng ganun, pero may pressure na agad e.”

“I don’t think they want to pressure us, but the method... they’re feeling the waters. They should sit down with us first. Hindi ganito,” he added.

As much as SLR wants to help the national team, there are things that should be considered, like the calendar of events the RP team will be competing should not be in conflict with that of the PBA schedule and the kind of tournaments Gilas will be joining.

Eala reportedly wants Williams for this year’s Asian Games and the FIBA-Asia Championship next year, the qualifying event for the 2012 London Olympics.

Encarnado also said that there is an existing agreement between the PBA and the SBP that the SBP will not get any player from the pro league for the national team.

Ill think of me Team first and if the scheds allow williams to play why not? Its not that easy...

I can answer that in a sentence:

"I'll shut my mouth up and lay on my back as I watch the PBA crash down."

As suggested in another thread earlier, he could give what Gilas wants, complete with a press statement about how they are sacrificing a lot for the good of the country. Then, they can negotiate for "equal billing" or at least maximum exposure for Sta Lucia vis-a-vis Smart-Gilas.

SLR gets international exposure-possibly more than what the PBA offers. Everybody wins!

SLR-Smart-Gilas, anyone?

If you were Sta Lucia's Encarnado what will you do?

Being a devil's advocate, I would suggest Williams to tell SBP to go to hell.

Seriously, if SBP really wants Williams they should bypass Encarnado and talk directly to the power behind the company, Exequiel Robles.

easier said than done. robles and buddy are bfs. buddies forever. hahaha

Send William's during the PBA's off season or when the Realtors are eliminated. The PBA is still on FIBA schedule, so I believe this is doable if wanted.

But I don't think fielding Williams for all 80 planned games of Gilas is realistic.

well its really hard to say what will come up next day infact we really don't what's on their heads but presumably word war will run down to money settlement I may not be right to say that money was the real system behind it but that's what i feel

You may only feel pressure when you're against it or not fully incline with it. Maybe Eala was driven to the hype or clamor of fans wants to add Williams on the lineup of Gilas I think pressure is not the right word maybe pleasure since one of your guy was eyed to complement the nationals it's just a matter of a formal talk but why said being aggravated publicly

Being a country compose of islands really serve its purpose most of cities, provinces were separated by seas and sad to say peoples interest seems lies between the oceans just like Univ of Cebu by not lending Fajardo, now Williams of SLR and many others to mention. Gloria Arroyo managed to interconnect Phils by its so called program RORO... now the question who would be the guy that could intertwine everybody's interest or the RORO man of sports

Encarnado's right. And some of us here bit the bullet. I just wonder why no formal talks were attempted at least on the part of SBP to personally convey their message to Sta. Lucia management and to Kelly Williams himself. Makes me think one of the reasons why Philippines is most dangerous place for journalists is because our journalists here allow themselves to be used to advance the greedy interests of certain sides through biased journalism. Unfair journalism usually agitates the other side of the fence so it's always dangerous

by reading various articles of the same story you can tell who is pba press and who is sbp press...

if there are long explanations/quotes from barrios or alvarez, that's the work of a pba press

sbp press does the hype job for smart gilas

Yeah, he and Alvarez have more knowledge than Toroman himself when it come to the int'l game, chemistry issues, etc.

if im buddy i'll ask kelly if he wants to play for rp and for gilas. if he says no, end of the story.

if he says yes.he'll play.but not when the pba is on-going :D
