hmmm? :eek::eek::p

Someone posted this at P*X. Bigtime games tomorrow, expect to see some slam-banging from both teams.

The SAN BEDA RED LIONS clobbered San Sebastian, 88-76.
Largest lead was 18 points.

It seems that SSC's shallow bench and very short player rotation got unmasked in this game.

In contrast, SBC's second unit played as well or even better than the starting 5 to give the team good sized leads starting the second period.

SSC's veterans did not show up today, even Pascual struggled. SSC did not have a leader. On the other hand, Borgie Hermida played extremely well for SBC. This guy has a long way to go, very high basketball IQ.

I have a feeling Mapua will defeat San Beda or SSC in the 2nd round..

hmm. I dont know, but with the way the Cardinals played earlier, i really doubt if they can upset the Top 2 teams. The Red Lions are a scary team if they get their acts together and play as a team. Plus they have a really deep bench and they are peaking at the right time. This is the tallest collegiate team ive seen so far.

Let us see what the other teams will bring in the 2nd round. I'm still hoping the Cards get the 3rd spot, i think we have a better chance of pulling an upset against the Stags assuming we get the 3rd spot and Baste remains at 2nd.

Watch out for Letran! Still a dangerous team. ALAS!

I don't know either but somehow they seem to struggle against Mapua...

Although in the first round they got blown away by these teams...

But i have these feeling that Mapua rises to the occasion during the crucial second round but always collapses in the final four. :o

In the losses against the Stags and Bombers, we experienced droughts in the 4th Quarter. Sadly, i think our team is not yet ready for bigtime basketball. I hope they get motivated.

I personally think that it's not the 2nd unit of the Stags, SSC-R lacks extra passes, in fact, the 2nd unit of the Stags delivered most when they got no answers from their Starters. There are too many 1 on 1 plays for the Golden Stags and there are way too many unmade easy shots. They also must give a lot of focus on shooting their Freethrows. :D

sorry bro talked to Calvin and he admitted it but its part of the game, to those complaining dont be cry babies. Even the Abe King did that it the past. Rudy Distrito also done that.

Wow! And he bravely admitted that and even has the guts to say that its part of the game. Can you please tell us what part of Basketball game is he talking about? My! This kind of player is such an embarrassment. Uh, more of like an INSULT to himself, his family, his team and his school.

By the way, complaining is different from whining and crying like babies. (ang babaw diba?!)

^ For a moment, I thought he got infected...:D

Yes, he is! hahahaha...Calvin is immuned to this spitting things. I think that's what he got on all his street league. Grossness!

Poor Jason, you better take a lot of antibiotics dude!

San Beda by a mile hahaha :D ANIMO SAN BEDA !!!!

Red Lions rout Stags for first-round sweep

MANILA, Philippines—San Beda showed it can handle San Sebastian’s best punches Wednesday and completed a sweep of the first round of the 86th NCAA basketball tournament at the jampacked FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

American recruit Sudan Daniel dominated the paint with 14 points and 19 rebounds and the Red Lions got big shots from veterans Jake Pascual and Borgie Hermida in the clutch to score an 88-76 victory in their first meeting since their memorable championship duel last year.

Bullied by the Stags in last season’s finals, the Red Lions were up to the task this time as they took San Sebastian out of its rhythm with its defense and controlled the game from start to finish before a sellout crowd of 6,000.

The Lions bloated an eight-point halftime lead to 18 late in the third period and Pascual and Hermida responded when the Stags mounted a rally in the fourth period that cut the lead to seven three times.

“My players battled,” said San Beda coach Frankie Lim. “One thing nice about the team tonight is we came in well-prepared and we expected the worse. We made stops and we stopped people.”

Daniel delivered the perfect response from all the roughhousing he received from the Stags, dunking with authority to restore the Lions’ 10-point advantage with 1:06 remaining.

“They were losing but you don’t do that,” said Lim referring to the two hits on Daniel’s groin when the outcome was already settled. “You should, at least, show some class.”

The Lions and Stags fought tooth and nail in the first quarter before San Beda seized the advantage, 36-21, after its second unit led by Jess Villahermosa went on an 11-4 tear in the first five minutes of the second period.

San Sebastian’s woes continued in the third period when starting point guard Pamboy Raymundo, struggling because of Rome dela Rosa’s defense, suffered cramps.

Earlier, Jose Rizal turned back Mapua, 61-54, to end the first round at solo third place with a 6-2 record.

San Beda’s Red Cubs nipped the Staglets, 84-80, to finish with a pacesetting 7-1 mark at the end of the first round. Jose Rizal improved to 6-2 after slipping past Mapua, 82-78, in overtime in the other juniors match.

First Game (Seniors)

JOSE RIZAL 61—Hayes 12, Almario 12, Kabigting 12, Apinan 7, Matute 6, Etame 6, J. Lopez 2, Bulangis 2, Montemayor 2, Badua 0, Njei 0

MAPUA 54—Pascual 13, Mangahas 10, Cornejo 9, Acosta 6, Sarangay 5, Guillermo 4, Parala 4, Banal 3, Stevens 0, Ranises 0

Quarters: 18-12, 27-24, 43-33, 61-54

San Beda sweeps dual meet with
San Sebastian
by rick olivares

It’s obvious how much San Beda has changed since their finals defeat to San Sebastian almost a year ago. They’ve gotten taller and deeper. And yesterday, the Red Lions showed that Season 85 is now a memory.

San Beda showed verve and guts as they upended erstwhile undefeated San Sebastian 88-76 for sole possession of first place.

Sudan Daniel tallied 14 points, 19 rebounds and 3 blocks in a herculean effort that towed San Beda to an 8-0 slate. “Su (Daniel) had a monster game because he was embarrassed with what happened last year,” underscored San Beda coach Frankie Lim of the American cager’s output. “He was trying to prove a point. And we will not be intimidated."

As stellar as Daniel’s stats were, it was forward Jake Pascual who answered the Stags’ charge as led by the irrepressible Calvin Abueva who scored 18 points to go with 14 rebounds. Pascual hit two consecutive jumpshots in the middle of the fourth quarter that blunted the Stags’ momentum.

As for Abueva, his fouls and constant flopping actually caused problems for his side just as they were waxing hot on the rally trail. At one point, San Sebastian head coach Ato Agustin pulled him aside so that he could focus on the game rather than get caught up in the WWE antics he and his teammates employed on the Red Lions.

“We just played basketball,” added Lim who was brimming with satisfaction after the match. “We expected the worst from them but ibang klase naman yung talo na tapos mananakit pa sila.”

Graduating point guard Borgie Hermida typified San Beda’s game when he bounced back from a lackluster first half to score 13 in the final 20 minutes to go with six assists.”

“Naging individual yung game nila,” observed Agustin who opined that the loss might be the best thing to happen to his team. While Abueva had his numbers and made life difficult for the Red Lions, the other key component to the Stags’ game, point guard Pamboy Raymundo, was taken out by the Red Lions’ defense on him during the crucial run. “At least they know that hindi sila ganong kalakas and there are many things that they need to work on.”

Agustin also rued the absence of backup guard Eric Gatchalian who played a crucial role in stopping Hermida during last year’s finals. “At least si Mako (Ray Maconocido) played the way we expect him to,” said Agustin who took some positives from the game’s outcome. He also told his disconsolate team that their campaign didn’t end with the first round loss. “It’s possible na may championship hangover – the NCAA, PBL, tapos Fil Oil. Ngayon kailangan na talaga mag-focus sa leksyon na itinuro ng Red Lions.”

San Beda made it a twin kill for the day as the Red Cubs survived a furious endgame rally by the San Sebastian Staglets 84-80 to stay on top of the Juniors Division. Backup center Chris Javier, who was last year’s Most Improved Player, stepped in for the foul-plagued Alfonso Gotladera to topscore for the Red Cubs with 19 points aside from pulling down 9 rebounds and dishing off 2 assists.

Gino Jumao-as’ brilliance and the timely sniping of Vitorio Vergara reinvigorated the Staglets who appeared to falter in the late goings. But several stops on the defensive end gave them confidence to try and pull off the impossible.

The Red Cubs, the defending champions, are 7-1 while the Golden Staglets finished the first round at an even 4-4.

The second round resumes this Friday, August 20 when the Mapua Cardinals face Arellano University at 2pm while JRU tries to stay within striking distance of San Beda and San Sebastian when they face the Letran Knights at 4pm at the San Juan Arena.
