First of all, let me clarify that I'm not involved with the TAO corporation, national team, PBA, UAAP, NCAA or any school team. Like many others here, I'm just an avid watcher/fan of Philippine basketball.
That being said, let me share what I have previously mentioned in numerous fora, that its easy to criticize, to wit:
1. NU for not releasing Ray Parks to the U-18;
2. The Parks family for being overly concerned about security issue in Yemen and not exerting effort to join the team;
3. Ateneo for its perceived stand not to allow Ravena & Pessumal to the U-18;
4. San Beda for not releasing Amer & Gotladera; and
5. Rosser and Holt families for not allowing their children to take time off school and travel halfway around the world.
Every year, its the same criticisms.
Thing is, its so easy to ask everyone to sacrifice when they do not have a direct stake (i.e. whether it be time, resources) or commitment in the project.
Bystanders and kibitzers are such know-it-alls with their holier than thou attitude. Except when push comes to shove they cannot really contribute anything tangible to the Philippine campaign.
If you were Bobby Parks, would you risk the security threat to your son in perceived Al-Queda outpost?
If you were James Rosser, would you also pull your son out of class, take an unscheduled vacation leave from work and spend your own money for accompany your son to Yemen, possibly putting both in harm's way?
If you were San Beda or Ateneo, would you risk loaning your players (who are on scholarship and probably receive a small food allowance) when there are missed class time (necessitating payment of overtime for teachers when they get back), a small possiblity of injury and a great possibility of said players being poached by NU (see DLSU - Franz Pumaren youth team)?
Before criticizing, try to "walk in the shoes" of the targeted individuals. Donate money (equivalent to one year's salary) to the national team or take one year off volunteer for the cause and work for FREE. Become a tutor or driver or do laundry for the national team for FREE. After that, you might find the view quite different.
