This is the reason why Toroman is eager to learn the Aussie defense which he considers as the best in the world.
Based on the Champions Cup the SG team is doing good on Defense, i think its bcoz we cant out run PBA teams bcoz they employ similar styles of play.. you cant out run a team who loves to run and as quick as the SG boys. Aside from being quick they are much stronger and more experienced than the Gilas players..anyway its just a practice tournament, so why bother? at least we know the weaknesses and still we have time to work on it, PBA stinst is just practice for the boys and the purpose is to expose them to those individually talented PROS, Im hoping CJ will stay and my prayers is with his child..speedy recovery..Godbless and Go GILAS laban para sa BAYAN!
they are employing man to man..I guess.. or I am wrong.. maybe its just that against an organized team like TNT or BK SG cant do what it used to do in Champions Cup and ragtag All Star team.. i really dont know what went wrong.. ( OT: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TvRmL_EDabQ)
And to Dylan Ababou he is not the same guy we saw in Champions cup.. ok lets give them one month or so to re learn Coach Ts system and lets wait for Greggyboi slaughter..the real test will come on december when the boys will be up against bigger teams in Europe.. sana the boys will learn the tricks of PBA players in employing hard nosed defense..man to man and individually they will be able to defend well their man, and Hey im not saying in champions Cup all the teams there is not an organized team..im pointing on Powerade Pinas.. my concern also is the boys look malnourished..Ramos need to bulk up, Ballesteros and Japeth too.. and Im hoping ramos will be able to learn to play in Small forward position, sayang si Meirhoffer I see the potential in him to become our Samad Bahrami..so sayang I hope PF will release him to gilas just for 2 years..
Naturalization candidate C. J. Giles was not himself at the Smart-Gilas practice last Tuesday. Coach Rajko Toroman said his body was in the gym but his mind was somewhere else.
The next day, Giles suited up for Gilas against “sister” team Talk ‘N’ Text in the first game of a PBA triplebill at the Cuneta Astrodome. Once more, Toroman noticed Giles was distracted. It was like Giles was miles away – mentally.
Giles started and played only five uneventful minutes, picking up a rebound and a turnover without attempting a single shot.
“I pulled him out not for a disciplinary reason but because I saw his focus was not on the game,” said Toroman. “Even in the dressing room before the game, it didn’t seem like he was all there.”
After the Tropang Texters blew out Gilas by 33 points in a merciless thrashing, Toroman said he found out Giles told SBP executive director Noli Eala at halftime that his 2-year-old son was dying in a hospital in Kansas.
At presstime, Toroman said he hadn’t spoken with Giles and didn’t know if he would play against Barangay Ginebra in another PBA tripleheader at the Astrodome today.
Giles’ benching triggered a swirl of rumors that reverberated throughout the league. Was it a disciplinary measure? Someone said Giles reported for practice looking “spaced out” like he didn’t sleep the night before or was nursing a bad hangover. Another said he forgot to bring his uniform for the game against Talk ‘N’ Text and that’s why Toroman played him only five minutes. Still, a supposed team “insider” claimed his mother phoned the other day to say his son had been hospitalized due to a blood disorder.
Toroman, however, insisted his decision to bench Giles was not a disciplinary action. He dismissed speculation that Gilas pulled out its big guns to favor Talk ‘N’ Text because the outcome would reflect in the Tropang Texters’ standings.
What made the situation more suspicious was the absence of former Ateneo stars Chris Tiu and Rabeh Al Hussaini from the floor.
* * * *
But Toroman said Al Hussaini hadn’t shown up at practice for three days because of a cold and flu-like symptoms. He added he has been in contact with doctors looking after Al Hussaini. Tiu took a bruising hit on the chest, near the shoulder area, during a recent scrimmage and isn’t even sure of playing today.
“It’s not fair to speculate without knowing the facts,” said Toroman. “I go out to win every game, no matter whom we play. That’s how I am. I took out C. J. because his mind wasn’t on the game and both Rabeh and Chris were down.”
An irate fan suggested not to count the wins or losses of PBA teams against Gilas because of the possibility of “fixing” games.
“Why didn’t Toroman bring back Giles?” the fan wondered. “He should’ve tried to get Giles to play precisely because Talk ‘N’ Text was the opponent and it didn’t look good that he played only five minutes. If Giles had to sit, Toroman could’ve benched him in the coming Ginebra game but not against Talk ‘N’ Text out of delicadeza. Maybe, Gilas will be used for strategy purposes in fixing the standings.”
Toroman stood firm in his position that Gilas will never compromise the integrity of the game. He has too much respect for the SBP and the game itself to do otherwise.
“We had a bad game against Talk ‘N’ Text,” said Toroman. “It happens. We had 25 turnovers and shot poorly (35 percent). They did a good job of switching their defense from man-to-man to zone.”
As for Giles, it remains to be seen if he’ll come back down to earth. His brother Malcolm is in town and together, they plan to set up a T-shirt business here. Giles has mentioned bringing over his mother and son. The word from the Gilas camp is he’s taking his naturalization seriously and will settle down here.
The unsettling thing about Giles is his troubled past. Could it be haunting or bedeviling him?
* * * *
It will be recalled that Giles, 24, was kicked out of the University of Kansas and Oregon State varsities. He has been cited by police for assaulting a woman and gained a dubious reputation as a practice dodger in college.
There’s no doubt the 6-10 Giles has talent. In the summer of 2005, he was one of 21 players invited by USA Basketball to join the under-21 national team trials. Pro scouts reportedly raved about his potential during the camp. Unfortunately, Giles was injured early in the tryouts.
In 2005-06, he averaged 6.2 points and 4.8 rebounds for Kansas as a sophomore, starting 13 of 33 games, and was hailed as one of the premier young big men in the US NCAA Division I. He was struck out of the lineup after two seasons for “irresponsible behavior and disrespect for team rules.” At Oregon State in 2007-08, he averaged 6.3 points and 5.8 rebounds then was dismissed for showing up late at practices.
Giles applied for the NBA draft in 2008 but wasn’t picked. He worked his way to a spot in the Los Angeles Lakers pre-season roster last year but after playing four games, was cut. Giles was later invited to attend the Gilas tryouts in Las Vegas last April and impressed Toroman with his length, athleticism and skills.
At the FIBA-Asia Champions Cup in Jakarta last May, Giles averaged 18.8 points and 13.2 rebounds in six games as the Philippines took fifth place. He also played in Gilas’ four exhibition games with the Japanese national team in Tokyo. Giles was particularly outstanding in powering Gilas to a 98-69 drubbing of Powerade in an exhibition charity game early this month. He compiled 22 points, 16 rebounds and five blocked shots without a turnover in 38 minutes.
If Giles opts out or is released, Gilas goes back to square one in its quest for a naturalization candidate.
The hope is Giles will straighten out and return to the Gilas fold. Giles is a huge asset to the national team – if he keeps his head screwed in place.
A DAY after losing badly to Talk N Text, Smart-Gilas found itself under the radar of the Philippine Basketball Association board.
The Texters surprisingly had an easier time notching victory no.2 following a 103-70 demolition of Smart-Gilas Wednesday at the Cuneta Astrodome. The outcome even shocked Tropang Texters coach Chot Reyes.
But not the watchful eyes of the other members of the PBA board, who was supposed to discuss the manner of how the national team aspirants lost badly to the squad which is also being supported by its chief benefactor, Manny V. Pangilinan, during a board meeting yesterday.
Lawyer Mamerto Mondragon of Rain or Shine, the new treasurer of the Philippine Basketball Association board, told Standard Today that the board didn’t touch the issue on the Smart-Gilas versus Talk N Text game.
“The issue was never raised during the board meeting yesterday as per request by Talk N Text board representative Pato Gregorio, who said that they will come up with a statement tomorrow [Friday],” said Mondragon in a telephone interview.
The PBA board met yesterday to discuss several important matters concerning the budget as well as its partnership with Solar Sports. The Smart-Gilas-Talk N Text game, whose outcome is being questioned by several basketball observers as well as several league executives, was not on the agenda.
One PBA executive said that he was frustrated on the outcome upon seeing how Talk N Text won easily over a Smart-Gilas squad which was short-handed after missing the services of slotman Rabeh Al-Hussaini and team captain Chris Tiu.

Depleted Kings play Giles-less Smart Gilas
(The Philippine Star) Updated October 23, 2009 12:00 AM
MANILA, Philippines - Barangay Ginebra will be short-handed minus Mark Caguioa and Eric Menk while Smart Gilas will be without import CJ Giles as they clash today in the KFC PBA Philippine Cup at the Cuneta Astrodome.
The Kings have lost Caguioa and Menk to injuries while Giles can’t concentrate on playing with his son seriously ill back home in the US.
Caguioa, who has just returned into action after sitting out the whole 2008-09 campaign, has been advised by his doctors to take at least a week rest as he feels pain in his newly repaired knees. Menk will be out for at least two weeks due to a fractured toe.
“We’ll be undermanned but we’ll find ways to win,” said Ginebra coach Jong Uichico.
“Coach Rajko Toroman and the coaching staff have decided CJ will not play because he’s very bothered (by the news). His status will be day-to-day,” said SBP executive director Noli Eala.
Smart Gilas, playing as guest team in the first round of the Philippine Cup eliminations, also has doubtful starters in Chris Tiu and Rabeh Al-Hussaini.
Meanwhile, the PBA board of governors yesterday expressed concern on the non-appearance of at least three key Smart Gilas players in a game against Talk n Text Wednesday.
PBA commissioner Sonny Barrios said he intends to talk to Eala to relay the league’s concern.
“The board just want to know if there’s a problem, then we can explore other options on how to conduct their games,” said Barrios.
Ginebra seeks to preserve a clean slate, going for a third straight win while Smart Gilas hopes to get into the win-column after losing its first two games to Burger King and Talk n Text.
Alaska Milk also seeks a third win in a row in tangling with Coca-Cola in the 7:30 p.m. main game, succeeding the 5 p.m. tiff between Purefoods and Barako Bull.
The Tigers are likely to play minus Asi Taulava who suffered an ankle sprain in their last game.
The Kings and the Aces currently share the lead with the Talk n Text Tropang Texters and the Sta. Lucia Realtors at 2-0, followed by Purefoods and Barako Bull at 1-1 then San Miguel and Burger King at 1-2. Coke and Smart Gilas share the cellar with Rain or Shine with each one winless in three starts.
The Energy Boosters pulled the rug from under the Tigers, 81-73, while the Giants were beaten by the Kings, 87-95, Sunday.
“We have a new mix, composed mostly of unheralded players looking for recognition. They want to prove they belong in the league,” said Barako Bull coach Leo Isaac.
Smart Gilas to issue statement

it's Philippine politics at it's best. The PBA will question Gilas on their performance while they'll try to cover up all the flagrant foul incident that should have been called by the refs
This is the reason why Toroman is eager to learn the Aussie defense which he considers as the best in the world.
If I'm not mistaken, Brian Goorjian is the brains behind this system. If I remember correctly, his team back then Sydney Kings visited the Philippines and played against the current National team at that time. I must admit, his team employed the most active, persistent, and organized team defense I've seen outside of the NBA.
that sydney kings didn't stop caguioa, miller, siegle from scoring at will. i saw that game.
