I don't know why but when we inquired with Chris Ross if his fellow Marshall U alumni was indeed a legit Fil-am, he just gave a sheepish smile and uttered "no comment".

Okay!! that sounds pretty much it.. but by the way did ross and powell played together?? i thinks we better ask lutz..

in practice maybe. but in official games no. powell, like lutz, became eligible for marshall only last season (2008-2009).

Bro, I mentioned this on another thread, the San Miguel Beer that sponsored Team Espana is different from the SMC of Danding, though they sell the same brand of beer, it is a split corporation from Danding......

partially correct. the companies split way before danding got to be smc chair. :)

which beermen? these beermen??? :p

UAAP/NCAA line-up for charity games bared

abs-cbnNEWS.com | 10/03/2009 7:00 PM

MANILA – The University Athletic Association (UAAP) and the National Athletic Association of the Philippines (NCAA) bared their line up for Monday’s Pinoy Basketbol, Kakampi Nyo! Charity Games for the benefit of Typhoon Ondoy victims.

Representing UAAP in the combined selection are Woody Co of University of the Philippines, Jewel Ponferrada of the National U, Jan Colina of Adamson Falcons, Joshua Webb of De La Salle University, Jeric Fortuna of University of Sto. Tomas and Far Eastern U’s Reil Cervantes and Jeric Fortuna.

Joining the seven UAAP stalwarts are four players each from NCAA’s Mapua Institute of Technology and College of St. Benilde (CSB).

Allan Mangahas, TG Guillermo, Mark Sarangay and Macky Acosta banner the Mapua Cardinals while CSB Blazers will be represented by MC Abolucion, Anjelo Montecastro, Jan Tan and Marc de Guzman.

The UAAP/NCAA selection, which will go up against a selection from the Philippine Basketball League (PBL) and Liga Pilipinas, will be coached by FEU’s Glen Capacio. Game time will start at 5 p.m.

“We invited one player per each team while we spared Ateneo and University of the East so that they can focus in their Finals series,” UAAP tournament director Mark Molina said.

This early, the Charity Games, organized by Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) in cooperation with the Araneta Center, have already raised P1.3 million for the Ondoy victims even before the games started.

Mikee Romero of PBL’s Harbour Centre pledged P500,000.00 as seed money. SBP President Manny V. Pangilinan matched Romero’s donation.

Smart Sports will also donate P100,000.00 on behalf of each winning team while P50,000.00 will be given on behalf of each losing team. Footwear firm Islander will also donate slippers for the typhoon victims.

Tickets for the Charity Games are priced P200 for Patron, P100 for Lower Box and P50 for Upper A section. The Upper B and General Admission tickets will be given free to the public in exchange for old shoes and slippers.

All the proceeds from the Charity Games, which will have SBP’s Smart Gilas RP Team going up against PBA-backed Powerade Team Pilipinas in the main game, will be coursed through ABS-CBN Sagip Kapamilya. By Alder T. Almo

Bro, I mentioned this on another thread, the San Miguel Beer that sponsored Team Espana is different from the SMC of Danding, though they sell the same brand of beer, it is a split corporation from Danding......

It's the peninsulares connection of the previous SMC owners - the Sorianos who own it.

Grupo Mahou-San Miguel is a Spanish brewing company, founded in Madrid in 1890 under the name of Hijos de Casimiro Mahou, fabrica de hielo y cerveza (The Sons of Casimiro Mahou, maker of ice and beer).
[edit] History

In 1890, when Enrique, Luis and Carolina, children of a French entrepreneur born in Lorraine, founded Hijos de Casimiro Mahou in Madrid, the French surname was poised to become the flagship name of one of Spain's most famous beers.

At first the brewery was housed at Amaniel Street in Madrid. As sales figures raised, the company moved to a new and bigger building at Paseo Imperial in Madrid, where beer was produced for the first time in 1962. During that decade Mahou became the first brewery to use aluminium barrels instead of traditional wood.

In 1953, meanwhile, the shareholders of La Segarra signed the "Manila Agreement" with the Chairman of the San Miguel Corporation of the Philippines, Andres Soriano. A new Spanish brewer under the name of La Segarra, S.A., an independent offshoot from the Philippine parent company, was born. It would later change its name to San Miguel, Fábricas de Cerveza y Malta, S.A. in 1957. That same year, Hijos de Casimiro Mahou changed its name to Mahou, S.A.

After the purchase of San Miguel, Fábricas de Cerveza y Malta, S.A. by Mahou, S.A. at the end of the 2000, the company was re-named Grupo Mahou-San Miguel (Mahou-San Miguel Group), the biggest Spanish brewing company. In 2007, Mahou purchased the Granada-based Alhambra Brewery (established in 1925).
[edit] Beers

The Mahou family of beers consists of Classic Mahou, Mahou Five Stars, Laiker (Low-alcohol beer), Black Mahou and Mixed Shandy. Classic Mahou is a lighter beer, with a taste reminiscent of Coors Light.

Yes Chris Lutz and Powell were team mates and actually they transfered to Marshall U at the same year. But as I posted in an earlier post, Powell was kicked out of the Thundering Herd Program after only 4 games last year. I asked both Chris and their coach, Donnie Jones about Powell being supposed to be a Fil-am, but they would rather not comment.

But if you go back to Chris' past interviews, he never ever mentioned of having another Fil-am as a teamate which is quite odd.

sir i think his question was on ross and powell playing together. he may not see the implied answer in your post that ross and powell did not play together in as much as ross and lutz did not.

oic .... i actually answered that question in a much earlier post about Powell. I said at that time that already left Marshall before Lutz and Powell transferred from Purdue Boilermakers and Florida Gators to the Thundering Herd.

if he is legit, one of the Liga teams would have taken him in already right now but instead he is at a team named "Chick Boy" competing in the Danny Espiritu Cup which is not even recognized by the SBP as a major tournament or league. But in fairness to the guy, he never mentioned any of his parents are filipino he just said it is his grandparents who are philippinians ;)

IT has been two months since the all-pro Team Pilipinas last played, and coach Yeng Guiao said its amateur counterpart Smart Gilas has the advantage when they face off in “Pinoy Basketball, Kakampi N’yo,” a benefit event for victims of Typhoon Ondoy, on Monday at the Araneta Coliseum.

Guiao noted that Gilas has been training continuously as a group while his players have returned to their mother clubs.

He, however, stressed he expects his squad to still go hard for the win because pride and bragging rights are at stake.

Lanky forward Japeth Aguilar will be on the opposite end this time after playing for Guiao’s Team Pilipinas in the Fiba-Asia championship in Tianjin, China, in August. Aguilar applied and was eventually picked No. 1 in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Rookie Draft but refused to sign Burger King’s offer and instead chose Gilas.

“Kapag nag-umpisa na, there’s really no holding back. It cannot be denied, there’s a lot of pride involved between these two national teams. It is also for bragging rights,” said Guiao.

San Miguel’s Mick Pennisi and Arwind Santos won’t be able to join Team Pilipinas because the Beermen are playing abroad, while Kelly Williams and Ryan Reyes are still recuperating from their injuries.

Reinforcing the PBA-backed RP 5 are Wynnie Arboleda of Burger King and Jay-R Reyes of Rain or Shine. The team had its first practice since the Tianjin joust on Sunday at The Arena in San Juan.

Team Pilipinas, which placed eighth in Tianjin, and Gilas face off at 7 p.m. in the main tiff of the fundraising event, organized by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP).

American CJ Giles, expected to become a naturalized Filipino before the qualifying events for the London Olympics, will also play, along with controversial former Far Eastern University guard Mark Barroca, JV Casio, Chris Tiu, Dylan Ababou, Mac Baracael and Greg Slaughter.

The Gilas team of Serbian Rajko Toroman are also coming off a fight-marred exhibition match with Talk ’N Text at the Moro Lorenzo Gym inside Ateneo Friday.

Some of the best in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines and National Collegiate Athletic Association square off with players from the amateur-commercial Philippine Basketball League (PBL) and the regional Liga Pilipinas in the 5 p.m. match.

The event has already raised P1.6 million courtesy of SBP president Manny V. Pangilinan and Harbour Centre’s Mikee Romero, who donated P500,000 each, and Smart Sports which gave P300,000. PagcorSports, on the other hand, contributed P200,00 and Robert Uy of Toyota Iloilo chipped in P100,000.

All proceeds of the games will be donated to the ABS-CBN Foundation for the victims of Ondoy

Guiao is an ambush predator. He wants Gilas to underestimate him by stating that Gilas has the upperhand. It's obvious that Powerade can easily overpower Smart Gilas at this point. Powerade players are streaky shooters. If Yap and miller explode tonight, I see their team winning over 10 points.
On the other hand, the only thing smart gilas fans can hope to happen is that Giles and Japeth are enough to carry their undersized team against all odds.

guiao is trying to downplay their chances so that if they (powerade) win, gilas will look bad. a win by gilas will also seem hollow.

from the lineup above, it is gilas that is undermanned, not powerade.
