IT has been two months since the all-pro Team Pilipinas last played, and coach Yeng Guiao said its amateur counterpart Smart Gilas has the advantage when they face off in “Pinoy Basketball, Kakampi N’yo,” a benefit event for victims of Typhoon Ondoy, on Monday at the Araneta Coliseum.
Guiao noted that Gilas has been training continuously as a group while his players have returned to their mother clubs.
He, however, stressed he expects his squad to still go hard for the win because pride and bragging rights are at stake.
Lanky forward Japeth Aguilar will be on the opposite end this time after playing for Guiao’s Team Pilipinas in the Fiba-Asia championship in Tianjin, China, in August. Aguilar applied and was eventually picked No. 1 in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Rookie Draft but refused to sign Burger King’s offer and instead chose Gilas.
“Kapag nag-umpisa na, there’s really no holding back. It cannot be denied, there’s a lot of pride involved between these two national teams. It is also for bragging rights,” said Guiao.
San Miguel’s Mick Pennisi and Arwind Santos won’t be able to join Team Pilipinas because the Beermen are playing abroad, while Kelly Williams and Ryan Reyes are still recuperating from their injuries.
Reinforcing the PBA-backed RP 5 are Wynnie Arboleda of Burger King and Jay-R Reyes of Rain or Shine. The team had its first practice since the Tianjin joust on Sunday at The Arena in San Juan.
Team Pilipinas, which placed eighth in Tianjin, and Gilas face off at 7 p.m. in the main tiff of the fundraising event, organized by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP).
American CJ Giles, expected to become a naturalized Filipino before the qualifying events for the London Olympics, will also play, along with controversial former Far Eastern University guard Mark Barroca, JV Casio, Chris Tiu, Dylan Ababou, Mac Baracael and Greg Slaughter.
The Gilas team of Serbian Rajko Toroman are also coming off a fight-marred exhibition match with Talk ’N Text at the Moro Lorenzo Gym inside Ateneo Friday.
Some of the best in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines and National Collegiate Athletic Association square off with players from the amateur-commercial Philippine Basketball League (PBL) and the regional Liga Pilipinas in the 5 p.m. match.
The event has already raised P1.6 million courtesy of SBP president Manny V. Pangilinan and Harbour Centre’s Mikee Romero, who donated P500,000 each, and Smart Sports which gave P300,000. PagcorSports, on the other hand, contributed P200,00 and Robert Uy of Toyota Iloilo chipped in P100,000.
All proceeds of the games will be donated to the ABS-CBN Foundation for the victims of Ondoy
