this is good news....

in ABL are our local players are they keys, not the imports.... we are exactly the opposite of the slingers, they have good imports but their local players are like junior uaap player caliber..:D ... they have a good system though.

the patriots should have a good game plan in taking the slingers imports out of the game by playing physical and attacking their defense to put them on foul trouble. i dont think the slingers will win against us in a 7 game series...

with those three... i see the Patriots challenging the Slingers for the title. they definitely add more local firepower to the lineup. Acuña led UE in threes made, Espiritu has this reputation of embarassing big men with his hops, and you won't find a finer defenisive player anywhere in the country than Baclao.

now the Patriots can afford to tire opposing imports or get them into foul trouble, and force them to play their locals.

Never thought I'd see Baclao and Acuña on the same team. :D

Seriously, though, with Baclao and Espiritu, the Patriots' frontline just became a lot stronger. I can't wait to see the Nonoy-Elmer Block Party.

"RP Patriots host three ABL rivals"

source: philstar.com

After splitting their two road games in the ASEAN Basketball League, the Philippine Patriots play host to three rivals, including an expected grudge match with the league-leading Singapore Slingers on Nov. 7.

The RP cagers prime up for that keenly awaited encounter as they take on the Thailand Tigers on Sunday at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig. They meet the Brunei Barracudas on Oct. 31.

The Patriots, handled by assistant coaches Bogs Adornado and Ryan Dy, toppled the Indonesia’s Satria Muda Britama squad in the league’s inaugurals two weeks ago but fell to the Singapore Slingers, 69-74, in Singapore last Sunday.

“It’s a good relief for the boys, they need a break from too much traveling. They’re getting weary,” said RP Patriots team manager Erick Arejola. “Of course, we also like to enjoy the thrill of playing before our home fans.”

Arejola believes local fans will give the Patriots – co-owned by Harbour Centre CEO Mikee Romero and TV-5 (formerly ABC-5) owner Tony Boy Cojuangco – a different feeling and motivation.

“I hope all basketball fans in Metro Manila and other nearby provinces will come and support the RP Patriots. This tournament is very exciting because of its home-and-away format,” said Romero.

The game on Sunday will also mark the first time that coach Louie Alas will handle the team after missing the first two games due to his commitment with Letran, which was then preparing for the NCAA Final Four.

well, since the likes of baclao, mirza, etc are already professional players (abl being a pro league), they don't need to join the pba draft???

the abl just became more competitive. now, who's to stop the slingers from hiring kobe bryant as an import? :D

:D

they still need to pass through the draft...the PBA has required all players (except the free agents) to apply for the draft before entering the PBA..it started during the willie miller draft class...

i just dont think they will be eligible to win ROY honors since former MBA players back then were excluded from winning the award..

ok. thanks for clarifying. :)

I think this will solve the problem in the 3-4 position of the Patriot...Nice one...

Patriots add UAAP standouts vs Thais
By JONAS TERRADO
October 23, 2009, 6:03pm

Philippine Patriots coach Louie Alas sees no problem with team chemistry after adding three collegiate stars in time for the team's first home game on Sunday against the Thailand Tigers at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

Alas, who will make his coaching debut with team, yesterday said the team has signed Nonoy Baclao, Elmer Espiritu, and Val Acuña to boost the team's depth after splitting their first two games of the season.

“Definitely, these players will make a huge impact to the team and to the league. They are exciting players with different talents," Alas said after the three attended team practice for the first time.

In need of frontline help to complement import Jason Dixon, the Patriots grabbed the services of Baclao and Espiritu after both players finished their stints in the UAAP two weeks ago.

Baclao was a key defensive presence in Ateneo's second straight title after averaging 5.8 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.5 blocks in his final year with the Eagles.

Espiritu, meanwhile, made it to the league's Mythical Five after registering 13.6 points, 8.1 rebounds and 2.8 blocks in helping University of the East pushed Ateneo to three full games in the finals.

His UE teammate, Acuña, averaged 10.4 points despite a 33 percent clip but made key shots when needed for the Warriors.

The three will join fellow collegiate standout Khazim Mirza, who joined the Patriots after his stint with the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers.

For the first time, the match of the Patriots will be seen live on both ESPN and local network TV-5 (formerly ABC-5) as they take on the Thais at 4 p.m. in Pasig City. Team officials led by owners Mikee Romero and Tony Boy Cojuangco and team manager Erick Arejola bared that admission is free to the public.

With Louie Alas now handling the team, I think Kazim Mirza will be finally utilized effectively. Also Gaco won't be forced to play the 4 spot anymore.

Thailand Tigers unveil second American import ahead of Patriots test
Posted on 22 October 2009.
By Jan Lin/Red Hoops.
Thailand Tigers have unveiled their second American import, Chaz Briggs, ahead of their first ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) away game against Philippine Patriots tipping-off at 4pm this Sunday in Pasig City.

After missing out on the Tigers’ home defeat against Indonesia’s Satria Muda BritAma last weekend, the 6′ 7” forward from Rochester, New York, is likely to start alongside the 6′ 11” American-Nigerian, Ike Nwankwo, and Filipinos Axel Doruelo and Ricky Ricafuente this week.

The Tigers’ American head coach Chuck Davisson, who was the head scout of LA Lakers last year, has also arrived in Thailand to complete the squad, which is also the nation’s first professional basketball team.

Though the team eventually tasted a painful 75-78 defeat to Satria Muda, the Tigers had celebrated their ABL opening game by giving out free entrance for all fans to watch the game at the Nimibutri National Stadium in Bangkok last weekend.

Wim Reijnen, managing director of Entertainment Asia and co-owner of the Tigers, who is also a long time basketball fan said, “We expect this sporting event to create real excitement among Thai sports fans in general who will now have their own basketball team to support.”

What do you mean by "forced to play the 4 spot?".. What is he supposed to play?..forgive my ignorance..Thanks..:)

I hope they start Baclao at the 4 position and put Elmer as a Replacement for Baclao.. Val Acuna is a great addition.. we have a slasher type player now that can finish to the basket and can play great defense..

I wonder if this guy ir related to Carlos Briggs, that scoring red-haired but afro-american import of Anejo in 1989. That player of Sonny Jaworski owns the 4th highest scoring output in a single game with 89 points in 1989, and had equally explosive nights like scoring 87, 81, 78, 77, 75, 71 and several others in the high 60s. A pure scorer, Briggs makes his living from outside of the arc, en route to an all-time best 62.1 ppg in a season. He was the Best Import awardee in 1989. He is what we call anak-araw, was the ex of former sexy actress Sheila Ysrael.

Another win by the Singapore Slingers against the Brunei Barracudas last night at Brunei Barracudas home but just only 2 points win... It's a nice game... Final score 82-80.
