2009 Philippines NT vol. IV

Well, it's a very big improvement for Team Pilipinas because the last time they met Korea they were beaten by 13. But in the battle for 7th place, they lost by only 2 but not after leading by 9 midway in the 4th quarter. They just don't have enough international playoff experience that's why they lost. Let's just call this one a learning experience. We all know that we can beat Taiwan. And Taiwan can place #5 if they beat Qatar. I think we match up well with Japan, Taiwan, Korea and in case of China, we can only beat their team B for the meantime. But what we must solve is how we can beat the emerging Asian Powers such as Iran, Jordan, Lebanon, and now Qatar. That must be solved by Smart Gilas. Let's see what Toroman can do about that.

probably...because they will now be seeded in one of the 4 groups....and if we will win the rights to host FIBA-Asia 2011, we will be given the option to choose our own grouping....that would be huge!

nope.not unless they change the rule that wont happen. only the top 4 teams will be seeded in a group.all the rest will be drawn by lottery...

top performers (played well in key games, consistent the whole tournament, played exceptionally above most critics' expectations) :)

1. baguio
2. miller
3. dillinger
4. pennisi

key contributors (many ups and downs, but overall provided significant contributions to several games) :o

1. yap
2. norwood
3. taulava
4. thoss

worst players (nonexistent, significant contribution to losses, disappointing performances) :(

1. santos
2. raymundo
3. aguilar
4. helterbrand

AS today RP Fiba ranking improve from 62 now 52 tie with Kuwait:D

Okay na rin ito

At least we see some improvement. We should be happy with what we got but we should not stop at that. Some Asian nations has taken notice of what we can do with limited preparation and resources. Hopefully the PBA can see the benefits and opportunities of continuing with competing with Asia's best.

I'm actually hoping that Manila will get to host the 2011 Championships. If we're the hosts, we automatically qualify and we get to pick which group we belong to.

they could've done better. they could've capitalised on a 5th place finish by beating Qatar. 8th is ok. but they were given the opportunity to move up a notch and they just gave up.

RP team 2007 record : 5-2 (9th place)
RP team 2009 record : 4-5 (8th place)

just a simple proof that this year's team is a total garbage crap

Learning experience? I dont think so. This happens every time we face south Korea. And its always on the dying seconds that we were beaten in important games. Remember Joe Lipa's RPNT, we could've gone to Asian games finals, and the last asian games where Korea advanced to the finals at the expense of the philippine team during the dying seconds, and this latest one! I dont think our coaching staff has learned our lessons. Sorry but I'm disappointed with YG on this one.

The Korea games just shows the Phil NT should play good hardworking basketball for 40 mins
When we have the lead they tend to relax because this is how it is in the PBA
Look at the good teams, once they have a good lead they build it up and then rest the good players like what Iran did to us
The NT should not be in a situation where in the dying seconds of the game the opponent has the ball and wins, unfortunately it happens against Korea but it can happen to any other team because the opponents know the Phils relax and lose focus when we are in the lead

didn't watch the last 2 games anymore. I've read enough. How would we describe this team?
Scrappy, (feeling) spectacular
Under-Coached
Kinetic (mobile)
Youthful (except for 2)

perfect description?

What about the coach?
Cussing
Retro, (outdated)
Arrogant
Proud Pampango politico

all we ever wanted was 2 more wins ...

the record is not an accurate basis for your conclusion. in 2007, 3 of those wins are from inferior teams in the classification round. and actually 5 as the chinese team b is also inferior (they were blasted by jordan and iran while rp struggled to beat them in the last seconds). meanwhile, the losses of 2009 rp are all from teams who qualified in the quarters and their victories were against teams that are regulars in fiba playoffs.

but still i would agree. the 2009 team is crap :D

I think it's just the coach.:D

Korea benched their starters in the battle for 7th place, so you could argue also that we should've won that game. And yet we still lost. So I don't see it as an improvement at all.

Taiwan, on the other hand, played with a lot of heart. They had a couple of setbacks, losing even to our team, and yet look at where they are now: 5th place, same as in 2007. Not only that, they beat the Qataris, a team which beat us by around 20 points.

That team has a lot of heart and pride.

You could also argue that the 2007 team fought hard to win 9th place, and won. The 2009 team, on the other hand, could've gotten 5th place, but ended up only one step ahead of the 2007 team, 8th place.

Hell, the Taiwanese beat the Qataris, and we beat those Taiwanese in the earlier rounds.

The main difference between our 2009 team and the Taiwanese, is that the Taiwanese never gave up, despite the setbacks.

I think that the 2007 played with a little more heart, and played with a lot more dignity and pride.

In the end, I think the results of this tournament sort of redeemed Chot Reyes as a coach for the National Team. He formed a team that had a little more heart, a little more motivation, making the best of what it had.

^Indeed, I can't help feeling a bit of envy at Taiwan's performance here. (Congrats to them!)

They finished higher than us, and in their games against the better Asian teams (Iran, Korea, Qatar), they were actually much closer and more competitive than we were.

This really should be a wake-up call, a challenge if not an embarrassment for us...

- Taiwan NT was never at our level, they were no match for our Philippine Centennial Team
- Physically (size) they're just like our team, they're not bigger or taller than ours as say the Iran/Jordan players are
- They're a country of 23 MILLION and they're foremost a BASEBALL, not basketball country
- And yet at this point their NT is more successful than RP who are supposedly Asia's biggest basketball lovers

It seems they've been doing something right, that we haven't been doing (at least for the Powerade team).

But on the bright side, I used to fear that Smart Gilas might just be outsized and outmuscled by Asian powerhouses... but now seeing how this "Pinoy-size" Taiwan team can compete with the powerhouses, I'm thinking this is somewhat how the Gilas team would be like, probably even better :)

Hehe the only redemption for me Chot in his mind is the opportunity to coach a rp squad again:D:D:D:D
