Gilas in the next PBA conference

Another sidelight is if the Gilas plays the team of Maeirhoffer and Menor..Those two better make sure that they won't end up as benchwarmers as some of the PBA rookies have experienced.

And be sure that they should perform better than the Gilas players..

the problem is just like now the pool is composed of 18 players but only 5 are available (Tiu, Casio, Baracael, Ballesteros and Anthony) as Giles and Japeth are busy trying out for the NBA, Lutz has an off season training with Marshall University, Arao is getting ready for the opening of Liga Pilipinas and the rest had returned to their respective school teams. This year we really have a problem with player availability for some periods of time so the only way for majority of the players to play continuosly as at a team is at the next PBA Conference. Come next year that's the time majority would be free, so they'll take the opportunity to train and play overseas. This was carefully planned in the boardroom and everything is on track with the schedule.

Thanks for explaining that Sir Nardy... I guess to avoid over burning the players its better to have the current schedule plus in case some invitational tourney turn up for them its easy for them to accommodate... and by the time they enter the pro-league they can always bring the skills along with them...

i think schedules can be arrange...like the previous games in pba, smart gilas had a 10 and 11 in attendance...

If the PBA really likes to help the TEAM PILIPINAS cause even though they would no longer lend its players after the POWERADE NATIONAL TEAM finish its International duties either this year or next year, then when the SMART GILAS NATIONAL TEAM play next conference, the PBA Board should and PBA Commissioner Sonny Barrios decide on adopting FIBA Rules and having said conference be a reinforced where there are two imports, one at an unlimited height while the other at 6'6 and under. Then even though GILAS is a guest team, the games by the PBA teams against them should not be treated as exhibition games and that it would count on the competing PBA Teams standings. For me it does not matter if GILAS would also be counted as a contender for the Championship or that they'll just have at the Preliminary Rounds only as long they do get exposed in a competitive atmosphere. With the way the PBA Referees makes their calls, Coach Toroman and the boys would get used to bad calls or even biased officiating.

THE Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) opens its 35th season with the Philippine Cup in October but questions have been raised as to whether guest team Smart-Gilas could field its American reinforcement CJ Giles.

According to incoming board chairman Lito Alvarez of Burger King, the board agreed during a meeting in Tagaytay City recently that Smart-Gilas’s games in the Philippine Cup will count just the same as the regular squads, meaning the Rajko Toroman-coached team could bring home the trophy.

Alvarez hopes to clarify the issue when the executive committee convenes on Wednesday.

The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) is hoping to include Giles, who once played for the Los Angeles Lakers, in the national squad as a naturalized player. For now, he remains an American and thus, ineligible for the Philippine Cup.

“If Giles is really part of the program because they will be joining a tournament this year, I think walang problema sa akin. And we want to clarify that to the board if they will allow Giles to play kasi nga All-Filipino tayo,” Alvarez told the BusinessMirror.

Originally, the plan was for Smart-Gilas to only play tune-up games against the PBA teams and the results of its games will have no bearing in the team standings.

“It’s like playing against a team with an American import. Hopefully, we can validate this matter to the board. Kasi for sure, hindi aabot ang naturalization niya kasi October na ang All-Filipino,” he said.

“We want to know from the SBP of its plans like kung may tournament ba silang sasalihan this year because [as]I understand, one-year contract ang pipirmahan niya sa SBP.”

According to SBP executive director Noli Eala, the federation is close to signing the 22-year-old Giles to a one-year contract but his stint with the Philippine team for the 2011 Asian qualifier for the Olympics still depends on his performance and on-and-off the court behavior.

Giles, who will arrive on September 1, is a former first-round selection of the Lakers in the National Basketball Association and played for the Smart-Gilas team in the International Basketball Federation (Fiba)-Asia Champions Cup in Jakarta in June where the team finished a decent fifth.

Talk ’N Text is the defending champion in the All-Filipino tournament. Curiously, the team is owned by Manny V. Pangilinan, also the president of SBP.

Are they going to compete for the title?? i mean it was a decision that was made last april that they are going to play in the PBA but it will be all exhibition games only and will not contend for the title.

As reports have mentioned they will still talk about it in the next board meeting. Among the issues that would be raised would be the probable inclusion of Giles (if he's naturalized by October, which is improbable, i don't think there should be any questions) plus the games, if they should count or not during their stint...

The last news is that the games would count but they won't be among the contenders for a playoff spot. Meaning if say, SMB lost against Gilas the LOSS would count against their record. Obviously, this would mean a more competitive game because if they won't count it it's going to be a purely exhibition game--- if i were SMB of course i wouldn't want to risk playing 100%.

Thanks for the update.. hope they can go on full route and they would include gabe, jared, and japeth on the line-up.. or they can televise thier games aborad.
