I just hope they would get enough exposure to jell together as a team

Let's see about the 40-to-50 points blowout party that Yeng has targeted. :D

(And i really want to see that so the team can gain confidence before the FIBA Asia--- we needs a lot of it against the powerhouse teams of Asia)

Team Pilipinas Faces Malaysia

Updated May 28, 2009 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines – Powerade Team Pilipinas begins its quest for a berth in the World Championship in Islamabad, Turkey next year as it takes on Malaysia in the opener of the SEABA championship in Medan, Indonesia on June 6.

The Nationals’ games in the SEABA joust are down to four following the withdrawal of Thailand and Laos. They play host Indonesia on June 7, Singapore the next day and, barring any trouble, the final match on June 9.

A stint in the SEABA finale guarantees the RP team of a stint in the Fiba-Asia championship in Tianjin, China on August, which, in turn, serves as the Asian qualifier for the Turkey world meet.

The original SEABA schedule is June 6-10 with six competing teams figuring in a round-robin affair then the team with the best record automatically declared champion.

SEABA secretary general Dato Yeoh Choo Hock drew a new format on Thailand’s and Laos’ withdrawal.

“The change doesn’t really matter to us as we’re confident we have the advantage in the field in terms of talent, athleticism and the size,” RP coach Yeng Guiao told The STAR.

“Nakakahinayang lang we’re now playing one less game. For us, the more games we play internationally the better as we’re trying to develop the team’s bonding and chemistry,” Guiao added.

“We’re not trying to qualify in SEABA. We can do that easily. What we want to get in this trip is the bonding experience, the period of time the players bond together away from their mother teams. Based from the All-Star experience, it does a lot for their chemistry as a group.” - N. Beltran

Team Pilipinas to test Malaysians' mettle in SEABA opener
Thursday, May 28, 2009 4:14:00 AM

Malaysia gets the first crack against the powerhouse Powerade Team Pilipinas as the two countries open hostilities in the 8th South East Asia Basketball Association (SEABA) men's championship in Medan, Indonesia next week.

The two teams are set to clash at 5:00 p.m. (6:00 p.m. Manila time) in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader on opening day.

The formal opening ceremony precedes the match between the Filipinos and Malaysians, before host Indonesia and Singapore take to the floor in the 8:00 p.m. second game.

Before Thailand, Laos was the first to pull out of the tournament, leaving the Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia scrambling for the two slots reserved for the region.

The following day (June 7), the PBA-backed nationals under coach Yeng Guiao take on the Indonesians in the 8:00 p.m. main game, shortly after the Singapore-Malaysia opening match.

"Wala kaming pahinga dito," said Guiao of the three straight playing days for the team.

In the absence of Thailand, Guiao pointed to Malaysia as the one team likely to give the Filipinos a good fight.

"Although we're not also counting out Indonesia because of its advantage as host country. Siyempre, andiyan `yung favorable ang schedule sa kanila, 'yung comfort ng players nila playing in front of their homecrowd and other intangible factors," added the Filipino coach.

The RP five ends its elimination round campaign against Singapore at 6:00 p.m. on June 8. Indonesia and Malaysia clash in the 8:00 p.m. main game.

The championship game is set the next day (June 9) between the two teams with the best record after the preliminary round.

My friend says Yeng is gearing up Thoss as alternate that's why he was left out of SEABA. He becomes expendable with the looming entry of Aguilar.

I hope he's wrong. I actually feel that Thoss can be the team's most important big man, with or without Aguilar. Besides, Thoss games' have been on the dowturn since the all-star break so it's possible that he is really nursing an injury.

No! That was not what he meant for. Coach guiao and his team are willing to sacrifice a blowout margins against lesser SEA opponents to establish a good system for the national team. It means the winning gap might be closer than we think because of gameplan and the execution of offense, not the usual americanism style of play like run and gun, speed and athletic ability display.

coach guiao did promise a blow out first and meant every word of it, saying he'll try to win by a margin of 40-50 points.. however, he backtracked and said he'd focus more on the gameplan. that's how you should have answered it.

if he established the system he is mentioning they will not win by 40-50 they will win by my highest estimate 60-70:D:D:D:D

I expect our team to exercise a full rotation of players in this tourney. Highest winning margin I think would be 30, lowest would be 15-20.

Then we should not be dreaming even 8th place in fiba asia 15-25 is unforgivable even with a team adjusting to a system your giving our opponents wrong sign of progress I believe as the other forumers say they are close to practice dummies:D:D:D

the final lineup of the PBA powerade team was reported at TV PATROL World. one unknown name ronald celis is part of the team that was flashed on the screen. who is ronald celis?

also the name of nadurata, gee abanilla and yeng guiao... i think their list mixed with the names of the players...

i am still wondering why suddenly ABS reported about the PBA BACKED National TEAM... i hope it will be a done deal to abs and pba... :)

what i see is that guiao and nadurata's name are printed last with a coach tag. i think celis is one of the assistant coaches, the same as abanilla. looks like it was a pretty lame report because they failed to edit the posting.

I think Chot also used a 12 man rotation in their previous participation here. If Yeng limits to say 8-10 man rotation it is very possible to achieve a 40 point win. But with limited amount of time to familiarize with each other, giving all the players enough playing time might help them adjust to Yeng's system.

Off-topic: Anyone have a picture of the Team Pilipinas poster saying "Team Pilipinas chooses Powerade"?
