I dont know if unsay plano ni gomez ganina iya gi bench c fajardo in 1st quarter nga iya man unta ang 8 points then nindot ang duwa unlike cabahug nga seconds nlng niya gipagawas c slauther sa 4rth quarter mao nalubong cla pag 1st quarter c quilantang ang gi pa guard ni slauther pirting ka mismatch nya pag 4rth quarter 5 minutes pa ang nahabilin 11 points ra labaw gikuha nasad c fajardo nga na warning na unta to cla slauther ug manigue...
Translation

I dont know what was Coach Gomez plan earlier but he Benched Fajardo in the first quarter where he all had 8 points and was having a good game unlike Coach Cabahug where he let Slaughter play for the whole fourth quarter until just a few seconds left thats why they had a big lead. In the first quarter, Quilantang was guarding Slaughter which was a big mismatch. And when it came to the fourth quarter with 5 minutes left and the lead was down to 11 he took out Fajardo again when Slaughter and Manigue had 1 more foul left before being disqualified...

i did not say they would meet in the finals. the question mark is for my uncertainty of the title of the tournament. its only now that i rememeber that its philippine collegiate championship.whoever wins in cesafi will be seeded already in the tournament (need not go to zonal qualifiying or something). im not sure about the runner-up though. but still, there's a chance they could meet in the tournament proper.

the CeSAFI runner-up goes through the zonals in Cebu and will have its hands full against SSC-R Baycats and Adamson U. I think the format puts the CeSAFI champion in the other bracket of the sweet 16 pairings should the CeSAFI runner-up hurdle the zonals, so they could meet only in the finals. I guess that's the idea, maybe someone from PCC can confirm

A step for 9th CESAFI CROWN

A step for 9th CESAFI CROWN

The University of the Visayas Green Lancers routed the University of Cebu Webmasters, 81-67, for a 2-1 lead 1 in the 2009 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) Collegiate Basketball Finals held at the Cebu Coliseum last Tuesday.

The Green Lancers showed they have learned the lesson in the past two games as they took the game hard to the Webmasters in the opening minutes and refused to be out-hustled and outscored in the opening quarter.

UV, which trailed UC early in the first two games, held its ground steadily while waiting for the Webmasters to slowly melt behind its precise running game.

UV (81)- Slaughter 22, Dennison 17, Calo 15, Cincoflores 10, Diputado 9, Olivares 5, Lao 2, Manigque 1.

UC (67)- Fajardo 24, Rogado 8, Juliane 8, Bernil 8, Abella 7, Quilantang 5, Tano 3, Cayanong 2, Mohamad 2.

Today, the Green Lancers will be shooting for an unprecedented ninth straight title in Game 4 of the best-of-five series at the Cebu Coliseum.

In Game 3, UV got some surprising firepower from Emmanuel Calo who proved to be the missing link in coach Boy Cabahug’s bench.

Calo, who was unstoppable at the backcourt, scored all of his 15 points in the second half to help UV keep the Webmasters at bay.

UC put up a good fight in the past two quarters before allowing UV to pull away from the tight contest in the last 2:15 of the second quarter.

The Webmasters tied the game for the last time coming from the five points of Franz Bernil and a jumper by Fajardo with 7:29 remaining in the third.

From there, UC crumbled into pieces and its defense mellowed after Greg Slaughter scored back-to-back perimeter shots over Fajardo to anchor UV’s quick 10-0 run for a 44-34 lead.

UC narrowed it to 46-41 but Slaughter, Calo and Chris Diputado answered with a quick 7-0 spurt for a 12-point lead at the start of the fourth.

Pages: Can UC ambush UV to force a wild Game 5?

EVER since the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (Cesafi) started in 2001, one name has emerged victorious in men’s collegiate basketball. For the past eight seasons, the University of the Visayas has been undefeated. They’re 8-0.

Will this number become nine out of nine tonight, when the UV Green Lancers, armed with a 2-1 lead in this best-of-five Finals series, meet the University of Cebu Webmasters in Game 4?

“This is our biggest game of the entire season,” said top lawyer Baldomero “Merong” Estenzo, who is UC’s Dean of the Law School and the basketball team manager, when we spoke yesterday morning. “If we win, we will have an excellent chance in Game 5 on Sunday. The momentum will be with us. Our players will have added morale.”

Of course, the big, two-lettered word is... “IF.” Because if UC loses, then it’s the end to another disappointing season—and another splendid year for the unbeatable Green Lancers.

“The key to UV’s wins has been their experience,” added Estenzo. “In Game 1, we led the entire game and only lost it in the last three minutes. Same with Game 2. We led but then UV came back. Good that we won that game in the end.”

That’s true. In Game 1, UC led 42-36 entering the fourth quarter. With 7:49 left in the ballgame, they had a 10-point margin, 48-38. But in the end, the last-minute jitters attacked their squad as UV escaped with a 64-56 victory.

In Game 2, UC again led, this time by as much as 16 points before UV sneaked back to lead 70-68 with just 32 seconds left to play. That’s when the heroics of Rommel Luceño arrived when he buried a three-pointer to give UC the win via overtime, 71-70.

In last Tuesday’s Game 3, it was all-UV as the Lancers won, 81-67.

“Our players were very tired in Game 3,” said Estenzo. “Game 2 was played on Monday and, on Tuesday, we played Game 3. Unlike UV where they have a lot of second stringers, with us, we rely on a few key players for the entire ballgame. And so, playing back-to-back days, UC was tired. Also, that was a disadvantage to us because many of our players are rookies and not as experienced.”

As to UC’s star center, the 6’9” Jun Mar Fajardo, how has he fared in the finals?

“He knows he’s carrying the team. But, sometimes, he becomes too ‘gigil.’ Maybe because too much pressure is on him.

At times, “ma-pugos niya ang iyang duwa.” When he’s double- or triple-teamed, ma-pugos niya. He has to realize that, when he’s double-teamed, that leaves one teammate vacant. And with UC, there are plenty of good shooters.”

How has the Fajardo vs. Greg Slaughter one-on-one played so far?

“Slaughter, no doubt, is a very valuable player for UV. He has the height. He has the heft. And he can stop Fajardo. But in Game 1, it was Fajardo who outplayed Slaughter. But in the next two games, it was Slaughter who dominated.

What I told Bernard Ricablanca (UC’s athletic director) was for Fajardo to take advantage of his speed. He’s fast. For a person with his height, he’s fast. But I’ve noticed that he has the habit, in practice, of simply jogging. They should engage him with more sprints.

Fajardo is extraordinary for a guy at 6’9”. He’s not slow-footed. He has to take advantage of his speed. Like, for example, after he rebounds and passes the ball, he should sprint back. No one, especially Slaughter, will be able to catch him.”

When I asked Estenzo why UV, this entire decade, has been unbeatable, his reply was precise. “They have an excellent program. A program that’s geared towards winning championships.

They have a deep bench. They have a lot of players. Lots of reserves. They can even form a second squad that can compete against everybody. And so, these second- and third-string players, after a year or two with UV, they’re already seasoned.

It’s a continuous winning program.”

Finally, I asked Atty. Estenzo what it will take for UC to break the UV streak. “Our players need to trust each other. No one player can carry the whole team. Not even Fajardo. He needs the support of all players. We have to be a team.”

Lancers near ninth straight crown
By Gabby G. Malagar
Updated October 29, 2009 12:00 AM

CEBU, Philippines - The University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers bounced back from an overtime defeat in style, hacking out a masterful 81-67 demolition of the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters to take a 2-1 lead in their best-of-five finals series in the 9th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) men’s basketball tournament last Tuesday night at the Cebu Coliseum.

Game today

(Cebu Coliseum)

Game 4, Finals

5:30 pm UC vs. UV

The Lancers of coach Elmer “Boy” Cabahug could wrap up their ninth straight championship if they hurdle tonight’s Game 4 but they must be extra cautious as the Webmasters will surely wage an all-out war in a bid to live and fight for another day.

UV’s 6-foot-11 hardcourt bulldozer Gregory Slaughter had a complete domination over his UC counterpart in 6-foot-9 June Mar Fajardo, making sure that everything is in order with regards to his ardent desire of producing another crown before bading farewell from the Lancers’ camp.

Slaughter, now in his last playing year with UV, once again topscored for the green and white jersey side with 22 points. His perimeter shots were even more impressive because he didn’t have to play hard one-on-one against Fajardo.

Ritchum Dennison pumped in 17 markers, but the big revelation for UV was crafty guard Eman Calo who had an easy 15 fastbreak points. Harold Cincoflores also stepped up to chip in with 10 points for the Visayanians.

Fajardo was the only bright spot for UC with 24 points. He could have scored more but some of his attempts were deflected by Slaughter’s stonewall defense. Compounding their woes was the rest of his teammates could hardly buy a bucket in sharp contrast to their razor-sharpo outside shooting in their Game 2 triumph.

Save for Fajardo, no other UC player came up with twin figures as the likes of Moncrief Rogado and Kevin Juliane was held off to only eight points apiece.

During the previous two games, the Webmasters had a blazing start but it was a completely different storyline the other as the Lancers was in full command of the match from the start on the way to post a 14-point romp.

The scores

UV (81) - Slaughter 22, Dennison 17, Calo 15, Cincoflores 10, Diputado 9, Olivares 5, Lao 2, Manigque 1

UC (67) - Fajardo 24, Rogado 8, Juliane 8, Bernil 8, Abella 7, Quilantang 5, Tano 3, Cayanong 2, Mohamad 2

Halftime: 32-27

Finally a video!!!Hehehe!Good job! From the looks of the second video, i think Junmar is a legit 6'9", if not 6'10" standing beside a legit 6'11 Slaughter. What you guys think?Hope there's more videos soon...:D

Jesronne, the CeSAFI only records game stats for the seniors' games. For the high school, the only stats available are the ones recorded in the table officials' scorebook, i.e. points and fouls.

guys.. I saw new face from UV bench last tuesday,, They said he's the new recruit player for next season aside from saycon... any idea about this guy?

SWU's Janno Nuñez(power forward, 6'3) and DBTC's Rodolfo Enteina III(point guard, 5'9") are already with UV
