if our 3pt shooting wont click, then we have no choice but to play really HARD, PHYSICAL, ROUGH defense

if we can't shoot, so will the opponent. let's lower their FG%

once again, let's be the the bad boys of asian basketball :D

the problem is i don't see gabe, kerby, willie, to be your typical bad guys. di makabasag pinggan (trans.. they're too nice! :D)

maybe yeng can use a training regimen like what laimbeer did for grant hill in a commercial.... LOL

When a push becomes a shove and there are scratches all over .... it's time for Guiao to send in Taulava, Pennisi, de Ocampo, Santos and Reyes to do the dirty work. We do not have to teach Willie to become rough he just needs to practice this distinct stare at his opponents:

Intimidation is more of mind games ...... ;)

haha... LOL to those two guys drinking... they were like telling their opponents "i want to drink your blood!"

when was this?

Unfortunately Team Pilipinas doesn't have the intimidation factor it had before. Better get used to the blue collared style of doing things rough.

Number 9 is Abet Guidaben.
Number 7 is Bobby Jaworski.

Is that Francis Arnaiz or Yoyong Martirez behind the coach?
Is that Danny Florencio wearing Number 6?

correction #6 is the Philippines Enforcer par-excelance Tembong Melencio, in that particular tournament he had a fight with South Korea's second best scorer and enforcer of the team, Yoo Hee Hyung. While fighting they had fallen on the floor of the basketball court, rolling all over until the two was separated with each other.

please note in international tournaments, players does not use the same jersey numbers in all tournaments and they switch numbers from time to time, it is a ploy in order to confuse the opposing teams.

Back in the olden times, even the announcing of the team's first five is very crucial. I remember to have read that in 1967 the UST Glowing Goldies and the UE Red Warriors were declared co-champions as the championship game was declared "no contest" as the coaches of both teams refused to field their starters for the second half. The "no contest" verdict later recognized both teams as co-champions.

At halftime of the final game of the best-of-three championship series (series tied at 1-1), UST head coach Rogelio Serafico and legendary mentor Virgilio "Baby" Dalupan of UE remained seated on their benches waiting for the other to name his line-up first.

Dalupan, the genius behind Crispa’s glory days in the PBA, claimed he had already submitted his first five to UE’s official scorer "who will just stand after Serafico had picked his men."

Serafico, whose first stringers were already in foul trouble after the first half, stressed that on previous occasions, it had always been UST giving way and this time, he was just waiting for Dalupan to reciprocate.

In that historic cage battle witnessed by 7,000 spectators in the old Rizal Memorial Coliseum, UST was leading by a comfortable 11-point lead, 51-40, at halftime.

UST then had in its roster the likes of William "Bogs" Adornado, Lawrence Mumar, and Cirilo Fabiosa, three Goldies who would later earn the distinction as icons of the hardcourt.

The "no-contest" cage verdict was declared by referee Antonio Esclabanan due to "unsportsmanlike" attitude the coaches showed despite repeated warnings to field their starting five.

A four-hour emergency meeting followed the nullification of the game where the UAAP board reprimanded both coaches and designed a rule to avoid a duplication of such event in the future.

But it would be nice to have Asi do a Jaworski stare at our opponents:

what do you think. :p

but if we cannot intimidate as before ..... I know we have the the players who can do the hustle plays like what our past teams used to do:

pls confirm..is UST glowing goldies before? when did they changed it to growling tigers?

pls confirm..is UST glowing goldies before? when did they changed it to growling tigers?

Here's the explanation as per wikipedia:

The Gold and White colors came from the university's Pontifical status (the flag of Vatican City is colored gold and white), while the change from "Glowing Goldies" to "Growling Tigers" came after the University of the Philippines hosting of the opening ceremonies of the 1991-92 season where UST was represented by an old Dominican friar with band-aids (the Glowing Goldies can't be represented concretely). This has brought embarrassment and a search for a new mascot was held. Athletic director Felicitas Francisco suggested to use the tiger due to its gold and white colors. Francisco still dons her tiger-stripes coat when she attends UST's playoff games.

When it was UST's turn to host for the 1992-93 season, the new growling tiger mascot debuted in the opening ceremonies.

It should be noted that Manila Central University used the tiger mascot (with purple and gold colors) in the UAAP when it joined in 1952; it withdrew from the UAAP and is currently inactive in intercollegiate athletics.

more trouble brewing for team pilipinas..Lebanon's new NT players from abroad...

more trouble brewing for team pilipinas..Lebanon's new NT players from abroad...

Kekhia: Barbour & Freije to accept playing for the NT - Jun 15, 2009 (by Mohammed Malas)

In an interview with Assafir newspaper in Monday's edition, The Lebanese basketball federation's president Mr. Pierre Kekhia assured the Lebanese origin players Antwain Barbour (196-G/F-82, agency: Court Side, college: Kentucky) and Matt Freije (206-F-81, agency: Priority Sports, college: Vanderbilt) are about to aceept joining the Lebanese National Team for the long summer until the august's FIBA Asia Championship in Tianjin, China.

Antwain Barbour is a late bloomer who grew 15 inch (38 cm) in High school. Can penetrate and finish strong or shoot from long range. Played for Wabash Junior College before he moved to Kentucky (who he chose over Cincinnati, Indiana and UNLV). Was a CBA All Star in 2005 and 2006 and won the CBA Championship in 2006. Nickname; 'Twain' or 'Teardrop'. Owns a quick first step and is adept at taking defenders off the dribble. Pure slasher who gets to the basket with ease. Capable of creating contact to pick up fouls. Very smooth player due to his wonderful body control. Looks as if he is playing effortlessly. A coaches dream, has a great attitude towards the game and his work ethic shows it. Possess excellent leaping ability (40-inch vertical) which makes him a terrific finisher in transition. Has a great motor, plays well away from the ball. Works well under the basket and gets a high number of his rebounds by out jumping opponents and pure hustle. Unselfish. Barbour often drives to the basket and if the shot isn't there he looks for the open teammate. Plays with great confidence and always remains competitive no matter what the score. Above average defensive player due to quick hands, leaping ability, and good lateral quickness. Mature player who takes his time when the ball is in his hands. Because of this he doesn't force too many shots. Third leading scorer of the Spanish LEB-Gold in 2006/2007. Played last 3 seasons with Tenerife Rural then moved at the middle of last season to Turkey with Erdemirspor Belediyesi where he averaged 18.3 ppg, 2.3 apg & 4.3 rpg in 18 games.

While Matthew (Matt) Wayne Freije (born October 2, 1981, in Bismarck, North Dakota) is an American professional basketball player, currently playing in the Baloncesto Superior Nacional. He was selected 53rd overall in the 2004 NBA Draft by the Miami Heat, was then released and later played for the New Orleans Hornets. He played 19 games for the Atlanta Hawks during the 2006-07 season but was waived in December 2006 to clear a roster spot for Slava Medvedenko.

After being drafted 53rd and subsequently released by the Miami Heat before the start of the season, Freije latched on with the New Orleans Hornets during the 2004-05 season, where he appeared in 23 games--11 of which he started. He averaged 4.0 points and 2.7 rebounds before being released later in the season. On December 26th, 2004, Freije set his career high for both points and rebounds by registering 12 points and 11 rebounds in a 100-91 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

One year later, during the 2006-07 season, Freije was signed by the Atlanta Hawks and appeared in 19 games and averaged 2.1 points per game
. His best day as a Hawk was on December 10th, 2006, when he shot 4-5 from the field en route to an 8 point/5 rebound day against the Sacramento Kings. At the present time, Freije has appeared in 42 games, with career averages of 3.2 points and 2.0 rebounds per game.

Freije played for the Milwaukee Bucks summer league team in Las Vegas, NV. During his first game with the team, he finished second on the team in scoring with 11 points on 4-6 shooting (3-4 from three point range) in an 88-79 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies. Freije was absolutely blistering throughout the NBA's Summer League in Vegas, as he shot 58.6% from the field and 60% from three point range, en route to averaging 11.8 points per game for the Bucks, who finished 4-1 during Vegas Summer League play. Freije finished second on the team in scoring and block shots per game and first in field goal percentage and three point field goal percentage in only 21.5 minutes per game.

He is now playing for Criollos de Caguas of the Puerto Rican BSN and before in Germany & China.

Sean Taibi has rescinded his previous commitment with their NT and already left Lebanon. . . If their basketball will be successful in luring both Freije and Barbour that would be an additional headaches for RP. . .That's aside from the reports that they also waiting for their mystery 6"9" foreign-based player. . . with a lot of new players, building up team chemistry will be their main problem. . .

That could be the only downside of that..but still it's hard to compete against players who played as imports (Vroman and Frejie) in some parts of the globe and being imports expect them to cope up with the team fast.

whoaaa! Multiple headaches... :D To think that we still have to be wary of the other teams... The likes of Iran, China and Jordan are there to stop our dream of landing even just the 3rd spot come Fiba Asia... Whoaaaa! I think I'm going nuts here hehhehe... We really need a miracle!

but the build-up I think is more geared for the London Olympics and by that time if they do get the reinforcements in this year then chemistry problem would have been solved come 2011.
