I wonder what happened to Norbert Torres, maybe coach Franz is hiding the kid from scouts but it would be better if the guy joins the RP pool.I'm sure Toroman would help the kid learn new tricks.

Franz Pumaren and Noli Eala are still not seeing eye-to-eye.

A blatant discrimination
BY RONNIE NATHANIELSZ

I can't be reading this article but I am. I am not enlightened at all as to where's the discrimination between basketball and boxing, and whatever offer or compensation is being laid out to the future Filipino basketball players and boxers. Poor Ronnie quick to make judgment as to what the fate of our future boxers will be, Definitely MVP have a plan to support all out for the Philippine boxing team, remember he sponsored the Philippine boxing team leading to the Beijing Olympics and he spent millions of pesos and did it blindly after ABAP ask for it. So, do you think MVP will not spend as much to the boxing team knowing that it in this sports that we have a good shot at the gold medals. Common, Ronnie...

Now back to basketball, I think before we judge what the action of SBP with regards to our future basketball team and how it will affect PBA because they are asking them to sign a long-term contract, thus, stopping the movement of so called Blue Chips baller from amateur ranks to pro. Common, it is as if these PBA teams cannot find other players that can be of good use to their teams. Anyhow, they have to do their part as well and start a developmental league where can polish "raw" players, expand their scouting schemes (More fil-fors, other commercial leagues), or whichever way they can develop/discover new talents.:p

Also, they stop and desist with their practice of drafting blue chip players and not giving them good minutes. Keeping them in the bench or as practice players, what a waste. My point is within each team's backyard they have gems and potentially good players just waiting a chance to show their talents. I believe these PBA teams should stop whining about the SBP plans if they are complaining about it right now, because they have all the solutions under their own noses, so to speak. So, stop salivating for what the other kids across your own backyard have. You just can't have everything whenever you want it, if you want it then pay for it. Nothing comes free at this point in time. I understand it is not about the money but I do believe that we are compensating them this way because of the risk of competition that may poses to their careers.

Maybe, they should get a room to patch things up. :D

Ronnie N., two words: Shut up!

just give them time and space .... it would soon pass. If Noli and Chino Trinidad who were close before when they were part of the PBA TV Crew is still taking some time to reconcile. So what do you expect with this proud Atenean and Proud La Sallite. ...... but do feel things would soon be much better especially that Luigi is part of the U16 National Pool:

SBP may join ABL tourney
By Waylon Galvez

The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) is seriously considering the ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) as another avenue for its national developmental team to improve under Serbian mentor Rajko Toroman.

SBP Executive Director Noli Eala said yesterday that that option is now being studied after the ABL was formally organized in Kuala Lumpur last Monday with FIBA officials, led by secretary-general Patrick Baumann, as one of its supporters.

"That’s being considered," Eala told the Bulletin in a phone interview. "Of course we want to see the schedule and the format of the tournament first."

Eala said that he is scheduled to meet with Erick Thoir on Feb. 1 in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Thoir is an Indon media mogul who is one of the prime movers of the ABL along with Air-Asia founder Tony Fernandez of Malaysia.

"It’s going to be a good exposure (for the national developmental pool). Although it’s a professional league, there is no pro or amateur when it comes to global basketball," Eala added.

The former PBA commissioner said scheduling could be an issue.

Toroman’s team is committed to compete in the Stankovic Cup and the Southeast Asian Games in Laos.

It might also compete as a guest team in the PBA.

"Medyo tight ’yung schedule ng team," he said. "Since kami naman ang gumagawa ng schedule ng team, kung September pa naman ’yung ABL, we can make adjustment. ABL is a very good option."

"Aside from the schedule, we don’t know yet how much would it cost to maintain a team in the ABL. We’ll know after my meeting with Mr. Thoir," Eala added.

I just made comment about the RP's serioussness of this matter... I like it... this could help Toroman's team a lot in some ways

One possible problem I see is that school owners with players on loan to the development pool/team might frown on the idea of letting them play professional and lose their college eligibility in the process.

@nardy: funny how we kinda talk about these possibilities then the next day we see it in the papers without us even talking to the media :D. Could SBP guys be lurking in the forums?

Is this Kiefer Ravena? He had a nice shooting form..

Anyway, Coach Toroman's line up is still not final right?

I think the solution to this is to send a team composed of players that have no collegiate eligibility left.

Guys like Chris Tiu, JV Casio, Jervy Cruz, Marcy Arellano and Mac Baracael have used up their collegiate eligibilities. Plus the naturalized player.

And if the ABL would open their season in October of this year. Players like Ogie Menor, Rabeh Al-Hussaini, RJ Jazul, Dylan Ababou and Rico Maierhoffer can join the team as they have played their last year with their schools by October.

My fellow forumers is rightthe last articles is Mr. Nathanielz is a stretch he is just riding on the popularity of boxing and saying bad about mvp plans even though I am not a TNT fan it is a dismay knowing he is involve with basketball for a long time now saying things like that. Really such a shame

On Toroman's lineup .... it's too early!!!! 2011 is years away. The Final Submission of the 12-man line-up is still due for submission a couple of weeks before the actual competition starts at the 2011 FIBA-Asia Championship which upto this time has no host country yet.

Nathanielsz seemed to conveniently overlook the fact that MVP and Smart are also funding the national boxing team. Also, MVP is a ranking official in the ABAP.

There are also up-and-coming sponsors for other sports; for example, Shakey's Corporation which sponsors the V-League for volleyball. The German Bundesliga is helping out with our football program; however, politics have hampered its development.

It's not just the lack of funding which is hurting the Philippine sports scene. Unless politicians stop treating NSAs as milking cows, we will always end up last in international competition. Case in point: BAP and the National Chess Federation of the Philippines, both of which are headed by Prospero Pichay. While Pichay has done a good job for the NCFP (a lot of Pinoy grandmasters produced in the last five years), his old-school approach toward basketball does NOT in any way make him qualified to lead the sport.

Sports associations, in my opinion, should be led by a team of people who have been involved in the sport for a long time, either as a player, a coach, or a manager. This helps the leadership listen to the athletes' needs.

to be objective on the article written by Ronnie Nathanielz, in away there could be a disparity on how you reward the Basketball National Team and that of the Boxing National Team. But MVP is not to be blamed, he is just bound to follow rules and regulations.

In basketball in actuallity and in reality there is no more "Amateur" since the FIBA declared the International Competitions OPEN and allowed the Professionals to compete against so called "Amateurs". Because of that the SBP is not violating any rule if he gives a contract for millions of pesos to particular basketball players in the national team. But the rules for the the National Team in Boxing is different, since that team is embracing the "AMATEUR" concept, the ABAP cannot give the same kind of salaries that MVP is giving to the basketball players to the members of the boxing team as it would be in violation of Amateur Boxing Rules if they do pay salaries to the boxers they would be declared as Professionals already. The ABAP are only allowed to only give allowances plus Monetary Rewards for those Boxers who became Medalists in the Olympics or other smaller international tournaments.

hmmm if that's the case then what if MVP donates a large sum of money to ABAP and let ABAP divide among its boxers. The boxers would still amateurs because what they are receiving would just be donations, not salaries.

And does the international Amateur Boxing federation have this certain rule on how much would each country could spend on its Boxer's financial compensation?
