Games Thursday(Lagao Gym)
2 p.m.- Laguna vs. Ilocos
4 p.m.- Gensan vs. Zanorte
GENERAL SANTOS CITY, Jan.14 (PNA) –- The Trace Laguna Stallions and Ilocos Sur Bravehearts beat their respective foes in contrasting fashion to win the opening games of the Gensan Leg and jumpstart the Smart-Liga Pilipinas Conference II here in the Lagao Gymnasium.
Playing his first game with the Stallions, lottery pick Nigerian Sam Ekwe immediately registered the first double-double performance in the community based league with 12 points and 17 rebounds to lead Laguna to a convincing 84-73 victory over the Edding Zanorte Babami in Wednesday’s double header.
“I was surprised with the level of play in Liga. This is really tougher and the players are bigger,” Ekwe stated.
Ekwe, the former two-time MVP of the NCAA teamed up with former FEU star Arvie Mangahas with a 7-0 first quarter blitz as Laguna led Zanorte or formerly the Zamboanga Amores from start to finish.
The Stallions led by as many as 11 points early in the second period as they dominated the boards 47-33. Zanorte tried to keep it close through the efforts of former RP pool candidate Jonathan Pareno and point guard Cris Concepcion as Laguna led 40-30 at the turn.
But a 24-4 run fueled by 11 straight points from Mangahas gave the Stallions their biggest lead at 64-34 with 3:38 in the third period. Zanorte could not get any closer than 9 points at 77-68 with 2:02 remaining behind the big 4th quarter of Zamboanga City local Pareno and Jayson Rebollos.
Stallions forward Robert Sanz doused water on the Babami rally with 5 straight points to give Laguna their first win in the opening leg sponsored by Smart, Molten, Nature’s Spring, Air21 and ML Kwarta Padala.
Despite the win though Laguna head coach Nomar Isla downplayed his team’s performance. “We didn’t sustain our intensity on defense allowing Zanorte to come back. The team still needs to gel with Sam so we can take advantage of his presence,” Isla said.
Mangahas led Laguna with 21 points with Sanz scoring 16. Pareno topscored for Zanorte with 20 and 6 rebounds while Rebollos had 15 points.
In the main game, the Ilocos Sur spoiled the basketball debut of Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao as the Bravehearts defeated the MP Gensan Warriors 63-59 to disappoint a big hometown crowd.
Pacquiao, who started the game for the host team which he himself owns, scored his only basket with a fastbreak layup at the 6:52 mark of the first to give Gensan their first lead at 4-3.Dodong Tadena and Dondon Mendoza led the Warriors to a 27-22 halftime lead behind its tough pressure defense.
At the start of the third quarter, Pacquiao gave a spectacular assist inside the paint to Jaypee Locsin to give the Warriors their biggest lead 29-22.
But a big 7-1 run at the end of the quarter led by the sweet shooting Ismael Junio cut the Gensan lead to two at 48-46.
Junio who top scored for the Bravehearts hit a 3 pointer with 9:09 in the final period to give the game its first deadlock. From there the game was tight with Alain Musni and Nat Cruz combining to give the visiting Ilocanos their largest lead at 59-52 with 3:29 remaining.
Gensan trimmed the lead to just one point with a three point play by point guard Bob Cozy Ilanga with 1:25 to go. But the Warriors bungled their next two possessions to allow the Bravehearts to escape with their first win of the leg.
Junio led the scoring for Ilocos Sur with 14, Cruz and Musni added 13 each. Locsin led the Warriors with 12 points and 4 rebounds while Mendoza added 10 points.
Manny Pacquio registered 2 points, 1 assist and 4 rebounds in over 10 minutes of play. His brother Bobby Pacquiao also played briefly scoring a basket in the second quarter.
