[English or provide translation]

GenSan MP Warriors

Head Coach/Trainer: Freddie Roach

Hehehehe. Maybe he could turn the entire team into the pound for pound king of Liga Pilipinas.

yup mark yee, mark kong and erian daja are with misor meteors already they are there nce november i've talk with them before new year.

reason line-ups are not being released because I heard there are problems with regards to contract negotiations among the players and the teams. Players does not want to play for free or mere allowances and are seeking long-term guaranteed contracts which the team owners are not willing to give. Here we go again ..... Money problems affecting sports.

Manny Pacquiao will be the guest of honor in the opening ceremonies of Liga Pilipinas' 2nd Conference.

Despite crisis, Liga attracts more teams
Updated January 14, 2009 12:00 AM

The current global crisis notwithstanding, the Liga Pilipinas is looking forward to a successful second conference like the one it had during its maiden tournament.

Noli Eala, league President and Chief-Executive Officer, said 11 teams are seeing action in the Smart Liga Pilipinas Conference II that gets underway today in General Santos City.

More could have joined regardless of the prevailing economic crisis, but opted to defer their involvement for failing to form competitive rosters.

“We’re very happy that despite the economic situation that we find ourselves in, a lot of teams till want to join Liga,” said Eala,

“Hopefully, we’ll have more teams by the time we hold our Conference III because there are some which begged off from joining because they want to have more time to prepare,” added Eala.

Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP).

SBP developmental pool coach Rajko Toroman, concurrent technical head of Liga Pilipinas Perry Martinez and league business development head Joey Bautista joined Eala in the weekly session sponsored by Shakey’s, Accel, Brickroad gym and Aspen spa and MedCentral Medical Clinic and Diagnostic Center.

Six teams from Luzon and five in the Visayas and Mindanao headed by defending champion ML Pera-Kuwarta Padala Cebu Ninos comprised the conference cast of the community-based regional basketball league.

The Smart Pampanga, Ilocos Sur, Harbour Centre-Taguig, Trace Laguna, Quezon and Manila (taking over the Batangas franchise) composed the teams coming from Luzon while joining Cebu down South are Iloilo Mang Inasals, Zamboanga, Misamis Oriental and expansion team General Santos, owned by boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao.

Liga opens today

THE current global crisis notwithstanding, the Liga Pilipinas is looking forward to a successful second conference like the one it had during its maiden tournament.

Noli Eala, league President and Chief-Executive Officer, said 11 teams are seeing action in the Smart Liga Pilipinas Conference II that gets under way today in General Santos City.

More could have joined regardless of the prevailing economic crisis, but opted to defer their involvement for failing to form competitive rosters.

“We’re very happy that despite the economic situation that we find ourselves in, marami pa rin ang gustong sumali sa Liga,” said Eala at the first PSA Forum for 2009 at the Shakey’s U.N Avenue branch.

“Hopefully, we’ll have more teams by the time we hold our Conference III dahil `yung iba begged off from joining because they want to have more time to prepare,” added Eala, also the executive director of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP).

SBP developmental pool coach Rajko Toroman, concurrent technical head of Liga Pilipinas Perry Martinez and league business development head Joey Bautista joined Eala in the weekly session sponsored by Shakey’s, Accel, Brickroad gym and Aspen spa and MedCentral Medical Clinic and Diagnostic Center.

Six teams from Luzon and five in the Visayas and Mindanao headed by defending champion ML Pera-Kuwarta Padala Cebu Ninos comprised the cast of the community-based regional basketball league.

The MP Warriors make their debut against the Ilocos Sur Bravehearts in the main game of today’s inaugural doubleheader. The new-look Zamboanga team clashes with the Trace Stallions bannered by 6-foot-8 Nigerian Sam Ekwe in the curtain raiser.

“We’re definitely looking forward to an even more exciting conference,” said Eala, adding the tournament will run for about four months comprised of 11 pocket tournaments and more than 100 games to be aired over Solar Sports and primetime replays on Viva Primetime.

The format calls for 1 or 2 legs to be played every week with 4 teams playing in each leg. Teams in a leg play a single round robin leg qualification stage. Top two teams will meet in the leg finals.

Winners of the finals will be declared leg champions while accumulating tournament ranking points of 10 points to the leg champion, 5 points to the leg runner up, 3 points to the leg 2nd runner up and 1 point to the last placed team.

M. LHUILLIER DEFENDS CROWN
Monday, 12 January 2009

THE M. Lhuillier-Cebu Ninos are all set and ready to defend their Liga Pilipinas National Championship as the community-based league opens its Smart Conference Two hostilities Wednesday in General Santos City.

Not wanting to break up the successful formula, the Ninos will see 11 of the 14 players on its championship roster returning led by Liga Most Valuable Player Marlon Basco, Stephen Padilla, Danny Aying, Jercules Tangkay, Woodraw Enriquez, Jerry Cavan, Ronald Bucao, Mark Jonas Ababon, Jayford Rodriguez, Rino Berame and Ariel Mepana. The only new addition is veteran guard Alex Cainglet. Bruce Dacia and Ron Capati have been placed in the free agent pool and may be signed by any of the ten other Liga squads.

However, fans of the Ninos have to wait for one more week before they can see their idols on the court as the defending champions of sportsman Michel J. Lhuillier and Coach Raul “Yayoy” D. Alcoseba have drawn an opening week bye.

Based on the scheduled released by the Liga front office, the Ninos plunge into action when they travel to Cagayan de Oro for the first of their four assigned mini tournaments on January 21. Joining the Ninos will be the host Misamis Oriental Meteors, Quezon Red Oilers and Iloilo Mang Inasals.

After that, the next three mini tournaments will take back the team to sites of their conquests in the inaugural Liga conference that ran from June to September of last year.

From Cagayan de Oro, the team will immediately transfer up north to Ilocos Sur to test the host Ilocos Sur Bravehearts, Smart-Pampanga Buddies and the Trace-Laguna Stallions from January 28 to 31.

After a week off, the Ninos take their turn to play host to the Buddies, Meteors and their Conference One Finals victim Taguig Batang Global from February 11 to 14. The Ninos end their Touring Phase schedule by hopping over to Iloilo on February 18 to challenge the host Mang Inasals, Zamboanga Amores and Team Manila (the former Lipa-Batangas Barakos).

The Ninos won legs hosted by themselves, Iloilo and Ilocos Sur last conference. Their fourth trophy was earned in Pagadian City . However, the Explorers have taken a leave this conference together with the Tagaytay-Cavite Heroes and Baguio Victory.

The Ninos will get to meet nine of the ten other Liga teams this conference. Only the expansion MP Warriors of GenSan owned by world boxing champion Manny Pacquiao are not on the Ninos’ schedule.

They will get to play Misamis Oriental, Pampanga and Iloilo twice.

Pacquiao in Warriors lineup
SPORTING CHANCE By Joaquin M. Henson Updated January 15, 2009 12:00 AM

Liga Pilipinas president Noli Eala has confirmed that Manny Pacquiao is eligible to play for the host General Santos City MP Warriors in the inaugural leg of the second conference at the Lagao Gymnasium in South Cotabato.

Eala said Pacquiao was not in the original lineup submitted by Warriors coach Ramon Pido, a former PBL cager with Hapee and MBA player with Pampanga. But he was listed in the final roster that beat the 10 a.m. deadline yesterday.

Pacquiao was expected to make his Liga debut against the Ilocos Sur Bravehearts in the main event of a twinbill in General Santos City last night.

Eala planed in from Manila to General Santos City early yesterday morning to supervise the proceedings leading to the opening rites where Pacquiao was set to deliver an inspirational message.

Also in the Warriors cast is Pacquiao’s younger brother Bobby.

“For every leg, teams are allowed to change lineups so Manny may not be in the Warriors roster for the next leg if he has to leave for the US to train for his coming fight against Ricky Hatton,” said Eala. “I don’t foresee a problem if Manny is listed in the roster now. In fact, Manny’s inclusion has made the leg more interesting because the Warriors and Ilocos Sur are contenders.”

Eala said Ilocos Sur Gov. Deogracias Victor (DV) Savellano mentioned former Gov. Luis (Chavit) Singson, one of Pacquiao’s closest friends, was scheduled to arrive by private plane to witness the Warriors game against the Bravehearts.

* * *

In the tournament format, the league’s 11 teams are hosting a leg each. Ranking points are awarded depending on a team’s finish. After the 11-leg eliminations, three teams will be scratched out, leaving eight to play in four best-of-5 quarterfinal series with the survivors advancing to figure in two best-of-5 semifinal series. The home-and-away format will be 2-2-1 in the quarterfinals and semifinals.

The semifinal winners will dispute the championship in a best-of-5 series where the team with the superior record has the choice of hosting format, 3-2 or 2-3. The conference is expected to end in April.

Eala said Liga’s first-ever conference brought in 13 teams but the cast is now down to 11, with Baguio, Tagaytay and Pagadian taking leaves of absence. General Santos City came in as an expansion club. The other active teams are defending champion Cebu Niños, Manila (formerly Batangas), Pampanga, Taguig, Laguna, Quezon, Iloilo, Misamis Oriental, Zamboanga and Ilocos Sur.

Eala said in the last conference, each leg took five days to finish with three days for eliminations, one for the semifinals and one for the finals. But this conference, it will take only four days without the semifinals. A team that sweeps the eliminations will earn three additional ranking points as an incentive.

* * *

“We’ve got three Mindanao, two Visayan and six Luzon teams this conference,” said Eala. “More and more teams are accepting the concept of playing homegrown. Cebu, for instance, is going with an all-Cebuano lineup and took out former PBA players Marlon Basco, Bruce Dacia and Ron Capati to bring in locals.”

Eala said former San Beda star Sam Ekwe is playing for Laguna and Fil-Am Terrell Theophile for Pampanga. Another Fil-Am Joey Deas is being courted by several Liga teams. “The league is wide open,” said Eala. “We’ve got competitive balance. Manny is certainly giving Liga a boost and he’s laying out the red carpet for our opening.”

In yesterday’s doubleheader, Laguna and Zamboanga tangled in the 4 p.m. opener. Then, the Warriors faced the Bravehearts at 6 p.m. Teams switch opponents today and tomorrow then the top two finishers slug it out for the leg championship on Saturday.

Pacquiao, GenSan 5 lose ‘Liga’ tournament debut
01/15/2009 | 01:51 PM

MANILA, Philippines – As a boxer, Manny Pacquiao owns the world. As a basketball player, he’s almost just like everybody else.

pacquiapa.jpg

Pacquiao played 10 minutes and was barely a factor in the MP GenSan Warriors’ 63-59 loss to the Ilocos Sur Bravehearts in the opening playdate of the Smart-Liga Pilipinas Conference II on Wednesday in General Santos City.

The Warriors had everything to their advantage going into their first franchise game – they had home-court advantage and inarguably the most prolific Filipino athlete in history.

Except the expansion team just didn’t have enough experience playing competitively to pull off a victory.

Expected to provide star power to the fledgling league, Pacquiao couldn’t immediately translate his success in the boxing ring onto the hardwood, registering only two points, four rebounds and an assist for the club he also owns.

Pacquiao’s only field goal in the game was a fastbreak layup to give the Warriors a 4-3 lead in the first quarter. His only assist came in the third quarter when he fed Jaypee Locsin for an inside score that gave GenSan a 27-22 advantage, the Warriors’ biggest.

Ilocos Sur responded with a 7-1 run to come within 48-46 at the end of the third.

Ismael Junio (14 points) led the Bravenhearts’ charge in the fourth and Ilocos Sur took advantage of two successive bungled plays by the Warriors inside the last two minutes to seal the win.

Bobby Pacquiao, the younger of the Pacquiao siblings, also finished with two points.

In the first game, Sam Ekwe had 12 points and 17 rebounds and the Trace Laguna Stallions routed Edding ZaNorte Babami 84-73.

Ekwe, the no.1 draft pick and a former two-time NCAA MVP, engineered a quick start by the Stallions who led from start to finish.

James Mangahas scored 21 points to lead Laguna, while Zamboanga City native Jonathan Pareno tallied 20 to pace ZaNorte, the team formerly known as Zamboanga Amores.

Edding ZaNorte Babami

is this the official name of ZaNorte Team?

I think it's in Arabic. Probably the new owner is one of our Muslim brothers.

There is a company in Zamboanga City called Babami Farms and Babami Coop. whose General Manager is Ateneo de Zamboanga University alumnus JUn Edding.

Liga Pilipinas: Trace-Laguna, Ilocos Sur win in Gensan opener

Games Thursday(Lagao Gym)

2 p.m.- Laguna vs. Ilocos

4 p.m.- Gensan vs. Zanorte

GENERAL SANTOS CITY, Jan.14 (PNA) –- The Trace Laguna Stallions and Ilocos Sur Bravehearts beat their respective foes in contrasting fashion to win the opening games of the Gensan Leg and jumpstart the Smart-Liga Pilipinas Conference II here in the Lagao Gymnasium.

Playing his first game with the Stallions, lottery pick Nigerian Sam Ekwe immediately registered the first double-double performance in the community based league with 12 points and 17 rebounds to lead Laguna to a convincing 84-73 victory over the Edding Zanorte Babami in Wednesday’s double header.

“I was surprised with the level of play in Liga. This is really tougher and the players are bigger,” Ekwe stated.

Ekwe, the former two-time MVP of the NCAA teamed up with former FEU star Arvie Mangahas with a 7-0 first quarter blitz as Laguna led Zanorte or formerly the Zamboanga Amores from start to finish.

The Stallions led by as many as 11 points early in the second period as they dominated the boards 47-33. Zanorte tried to keep it close through the efforts of former RP pool candidate Jonathan Pareno and point guard Cris Concepcion as Laguna led 40-30 at the turn.

But a 24-4 run fueled by 11 straight points from Mangahas gave the Stallions their biggest lead at 64-34 with 3:38 in the third period. Zanorte could not get any closer than 9 points at 77-68 with 2:02 remaining behind the big 4th quarter of Zamboanga City local Pareno and Jayson Rebollos.

Stallions forward Robert Sanz doused water on the Babami rally with 5 straight points to give Laguna their first win in the opening leg sponsored by Smart, Molten, Nature’s Spring, Air21 and ML Kwarta Padala.

Despite the win though Laguna head coach Nomar Isla downplayed his team’s performance. “We didn’t sustain our intensity on defense allowing Zanorte to come back. The team still needs to gel with Sam so we can take advantage of his presence,” Isla said.

Mangahas led Laguna with 21 points with Sanz scoring 16. Pareno topscored for Zanorte with 20 and 6 rebounds while Rebollos had 15 points.

In the main game, the Ilocos Sur spoiled the basketball debut of Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao as the Bravehearts defeated the MP Gensan Warriors 63-59 to disappoint a big hometown crowd.

Pacquiao, who started the game for the host team which he himself owns, scored his only basket with a fastbreak layup at the 6:52 mark of the first to give Gensan their first lead at 4-3.Dodong Tadena and Dondon Mendoza led the Warriors to a 27-22 halftime lead behind its tough pressure defense.

At the start of the third quarter, Pacquiao gave a spectacular assist inside the paint to Jaypee Locsin to give the Warriors their biggest lead 29-22.

But a big 7-1 run at the end of the quarter led by the sweet shooting Ismael Junio cut the Gensan lead to two at 48-46.

Junio who top scored for the Bravehearts hit a 3 pointer with 9:09 in the final period to give the game its first deadlock. From there the game was tight with Alain Musni and Nat Cruz combining to give the visiting Ilocanos their largest lead at 59-52 with 3:29 remaining.

Gensan trimmed the lead to just one point with a three point play by point guard Bob Cozy Ilanga with 1:25 to go. But the Warriors bungled their next two possessions to allow the Bravehearts to escape with their first win of the leg.

Junio led the scoring for Ilocos Sur with 14, Cruz and Musni added 13 each. Locsin led the Warriors with 12 points and 4 rebounds while Mendoza added 10 points.

Manny Pacquio registered 2 points, 1 assist and 4 rebounds in over 10 minutes of play. His brother Bobby Pacquiao also played briefly scoring a basket in the second quarter.

So its back with Zanorte the former amores i think Edding is one of the councilors of Zamboanga City and is very much involved with basketball. But with the current line up i think Zanorte we couldn't expect a strong finish for them unless they beef up their current line up.I havent had any feed back yet with Pagadian team but hopefully we can still be able to join the current season and for sure it's a competitive squad that we will be setting up.

Liga:MP Gensan routs Zamboanga for Ist win, Trace Laguna leads

GENERAL SANTOS CITY, Jan. 16 (PNA)-– Host MP Gensan Warriors sizzled at the start of the second half.

Gand dominated a hapless Edding Zanorte Babami (Zamboanga del Norte) 104-80 to pick up a crucial win in its home leg of the Smart-Liga Pilipinas Conference II at the Lagao Gym.

With five players scoring in double digits including Bobby Pacquiao, brother of boxing champion Manny Pacquiao, the Warriors turned a precarious one point lead at the half into an insurmountable advantage midway into the fourth period to gain some headway in its leg finals quest of the fledgling regional league supported by Smart, Molten, Accel, Nature’s Spring, Burlington, ML Kwarta Padala and Air 21.

Guards John Gonzaga and Bob Ilanga spearheaded a sleek running game at the start of the third canto as Gensan outscored Zanorte 21-7 in a six minute span. The Warriors shot 58 percent from the field before a big hometown crowd as it secured a needed win to keep its leg finals chances alive.

Bobby Pacquiao scored eight of his 10 points in the 2nd half to help the Warriors win its first game which played without boxing icon Manny Pacquiao who skipped the game due to pressing matters.

Gonzaga led the Warriors with 18 points in only 15 minutes of play while starting 6’5 center Dondon Mendoza chipped 16 points and eight rebounds. Ilanga finished with 14 while burly forward Jaypee Locsin added 13 in the Warriors’ scoring parade. Sweet shooting Jonathan Pareno led the Babami with 22 markers following up his 20 point losing performance against Laguna.

In the earlier game, powerhouse Trace Laguna Stallions limited the Ilocos Sur Bravehearts to five first quarter points before coasting to its 2nd consecutive leg elims victory 84-67.

Jay Arr Estrada, Arvie Mangahas and Sam Ekwe reasserted their supremacy in the paint combining for 38 points to lead the way for the Stallions virtually booking the first slot of the Gensan leg.

After taking the half 48-25, the Stallions erected their biggest lead at 56-27 after a three point basket by Alex Angeles and a breakaway lay up of Robert Sanz in the third period.

From there the Bravehearts could not come any closer than trim the lead to 16 at 76-60 with 3:49 remaining in the 4th.

Sam Ekwe nearly registered his 2nd consecutive double-double performance narrowly missing the mark with nine points and 15 rebounds.

Ilocos Sur native Christian Cabatu led his team with 19 points as the Bravehearts suffered their first loss in the leg elims after nipping host Gensan in Wednesday’s opening twinbill.

I hope so .... we need more people like you. We really need to give kids in the provinces more opportunities to play basketball at a higher level. Do wish that you can find fresh talents within the whole Zamboanga del Sur province. Maybe you can also find prospects from the Zamboanga Sibugay, Lanao Del Norte and Misamis Occidental areas. GOOD LUCK !!!!
