FIBA Americas Championship for Men 2009

  • Thread starter Thread starter luuij_ss2
  • Start date Start date
Puerto Rico and Uruguay are the only two countries interested in hosting this event. No other country sent an offer prior to May 22 which was the deadline. The event will be played from August 26 until September 6.
Puerto Rico has hosted in 1999 and 2003 (all Olympic Qualifiers).
Uruguay has hosted in 1997 (World Qualifier).

Puerto Rico evidently has more hosting experience and political power, and of course a better weather since it will be winter in Uruguay.

Puerto Rico has many nice stadiums, but Uruguay would use the Cilindro which is also pretty big.

If you ask me, i'd love Uruguay to host it, becase i can attend Montevideo easily:D but i don't think it'll happen-

is he good? (I've never heard of 'im before)
I read somewhere that is was coaching in Venezuela, the level of play there is really low.

who's puerto rico's coach btw?

Venezuela is a good league. Top 5 leagues in latinamerica along with Mexico, PR, Brazil and Argentina. Maybe top 3.

Julio Toro is the creator of the monster called Carlos Arroyo. He shaped him, the good things and the bad things about him. The best coach to come out of the island. The philosopher of basketball. Julio is the perfect fit for the dominican team, specially if they advance to the WBC, where they will face the euro teams which always have trouble against Toro's matchup defense. Something against Toro is that I dont remember him faring well with a team with no PG.

could not agree more. i think he would be an excellent match up for the team. This could be a great cycle for the dominican team. You are right with the PG thing as well I think.

Good luck guys.

no PG?
-the dominican team has the ex-NBA Sammy Mejia, he's 6'6, Played in Italy, Playing in Greece now
-The Israel's League Scoring-Leader,and also ex-NBA Luis Flores (he's played in Italy and France too)
-The All-Star French League - Ricky Greer (second in votes this year for the MVP) also last year Finals mvp. lead he's team in assits, scoring, 3 pts, and steals and is second in rebounds
-Jose Oliviero,(NCAA) among Assists Leaders(in Lithuania ) and amogn scoring leaders in France
-Carlos Morban (NCAA) and Latvia League All-star
-Kelvin Penia (Developed in Spain) I think he's playing in the same team Toro is coaching in Venezuela.

and ther's another dude called Ricky Soliver, playing in The Czech Rep, and a kid called Edgar Sosa, but I think he's way too raw and inmature, nad he's kinda stuck right now, maybe he need another year or so to develop. Manny Quezeda is also a good NCAA player.

SAN JUAN (2009 FIBA Americas Championship) – After the FIBA Americas Executive Committee decided to retire Mexico as host of the 2009 FIBA Americas Championship, which is a qualifier for the 2010 FIBA World Championship in Turkey, a process started to find another country interested in being the organizers of the most important continental competition.

Last night after an important meeting with Puerto Rican Basketball Federation President, Ruben Nigaglioni, an agreement was reached to be the organizer of the tournament.

The event will be held at Roberto Clemente Coliseum who was the host of the 1999 and 2003 FIBA Americas Championships. The Puerto Rican Federation has a lot of experience having this type of event and the 2009 event will be played from August 26 to September 6 in San Juan and the top 4 teams enter the 2010 FIBA World Championship.

FIBA Americas Secretary General, Alberto Garcia, was very grateful to the Uruguayan Federation who was also interested in the event and specially to the Puerto Rican Federation who will organizze the most important continental championship. After an evaluation of the technical, commercialization, television, and other important aspects that will guarantee a competitive and economical success, it was decided to give the Puerto Rican Federation the tournament.

This event has Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Venezuela for the South American Sub-Zone (ABASU), Canada for North America and for the Central American and Caribbean Zone (CONCENCABA), Cuba, US Virgin Islands, Mexico, Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. The United States qualified for the 2010 FIBA World Championship after winning the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

Puerto Rico has been host of a World Championship qualifier in 1993 where they won Silver. They were also host to three Olympic qualifiers starting in 1980 and also in 1999 and 2003 where they won a medal in two competitions (Gold in 1980 and Bronze in 2003).

The last FIBA Americas Championship (World Qualifier) was played in 2005 in the Dominican Republic where Brazil won Gold, Argentina Silver and Bronze for Venezuela. The last FIBA Americas Championship was the Olympic qualifier in 2007 held in Las Vegas as the United States dominated the whole tournament to capture the gold medal.

some of those guys are not on the same level as the competition they will face. They are not as good as the Marcelo Huertas, Barbosa, Arroyo, Barea, Filiberto, Pepe Sanchez, Prigioni, Vazquez, etc... Some of those guys are not even good enough for their own NT. And a couple of them are not even PG's.

With Puerto Rico hosting, I would say it's pretty much a given that Mexico will play in the ToA.

Jose Juan Barea is questionable for the ToA (shoulder surgery)

ARGENTINA's Oberto waits for doctor’s order to participate in FIBA Americas

ARGENTINA's Oberto waits for doctor’s order to participate in FIBA Americas

BUENOS AIRES (2009 FIBA Americas Championship) - Argentinean center Fabricio Oberto will wait on the opinion of his doctors in order to participate in the 2009 FIBA Americas Championship to be played in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

"I played less this season, I am not tired, but it depends on what the doctor’s say to me next week to see if I have to take medication or stop playing. I have been calling Sergio Hernandez without any luck so far," said to Ole newspaper in Argentina.

There is still hope that Oberto will play as he will be key in the aspirations of Argentina as Manu Ginóbili and Andrés Nocioni stepped down because they are recovering from injuries.

"I never lost the will to play for the national team and I never retired. It is special for me and it helps you to gain rhythm and add confidence," he added.

Oberto thinks that Argentina has a good possibility to qualify for the 2010 FIBA World Championship.

"The national team, it doesn't matter who goes, they always prepare well and achieve many things like in Las Vegas. If you can, then come and play."

In 2005 Argentina won Silver in the FIBA Americas Championship with only two players repeating from the 2004 Olympics.

Luis Scola, Pablo Prigioni, Carlos Delfino, Román González, Paolo Quinteros, among others are expected to play.

Wow not only will Puerto Rico have the home court advantage they also got the easier group by far.

The draw isn't that important. All top 8 teams will face each other anyway.

Still, now it's safe to say Cuba has virtually zero chance of getting to the second round.

hey, and that goes to Mexico as well.

it is more important than what you may think. Since the wins and losses are acumilative, by I mean, that they count for the second round, so Since the PR is in a (way too) easy group that probaly means that they have a step in Turkey alredy cuz they will porbaly win all the games, and go to the second round with 4 win already, so even if they were to lose the rest of the games in the second round, they'd still have a somewhat big posibility to qualify to the Wolrd cup or championship or however is it that is called, and if they just win one more game in the second round they are already in.

So I expect to see PR in the Finals r fighting for the Bronze Medal

I hope Mexico proves all doubters here wrong and beats USVI, Canada and Uruguay ,which I think could be possible if Najera and others are healthy and ready to play . Never underestimate Mexico...and Cuba is also having a team that plays for years together, but their group is tougher then Mexico's...
