Lancers strike back

By Marian C. Baring

THE University of the Visayas Green Lancers overcame the tenacity of the University of San Carlos Warrios to claim their second victory in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) Sunday night, 85-78, at the Cebu Coliseum.

The Green Lancers had the game going in their favor after jumping to an early 10-point lead in the first period, 19-9, which they further extended to 15 points.

Post your prayers and condolences for Cory Aquino's family

However, the Warriors came back roaring and snatched the lead, 35-33, going into the third period.

Greg Slaughter kept UV in control and challenged USC to three deadlocks, the first at 39-all.

When Slaughter sat out with the game tied at 42, the Warriors relaxed, thinking without their 6’11” center, UV wouldn’t be a threat.

It was a mistake that cost them the game.

Junjun Lasala, Ralph Olivares, Harold Cincoflores and Emmanuel Calo teamed up for a 12-2 run that did the Warriors in.

Although Slaughter was feeling feverish, he still managed to come up with 29 points. He punctuated the night with a slam from his steal on USC’s Paul Joven in the final nine seconds of the game.

Lasala scored 13 points, Chris Diputado added 12 and Phil Mercader had 10.

Giovanni Padillo, who scored three straight triples during USC’s final attempt at a comeback in the last two minutes of the game, and Cid Cortes wound up with 15 points each. Carlo Padayao also had 10.

The Green Lancers now have a 2-1 win-loss record. Their only loss so far is from University of Cebu in the Cesafi opening.

Meanwhile, the Southwestern University Cobras claimed their first victory after defeating the Don Bosco Greywolves, 92-78, last Saturday.

Jeff Pria led SWU with 19 points, while Gilbert Gallarde added 12, for SWU to imporve its slate to 1-1.

In the juniors division, the UV Baby Lancers survived the University of Southern Philippines Baby Panthers, 87-82, squeaker, while the Cebu Institute of Technology Wildkittens dumped the USC Baby Warriors, 80-57.

hmmm... how was the game between Greg Slaughter and Junmar Fajardo? Are they forming a rivalry like Philip Cezar and Mon Fernnadez during their hey days in PBA?

I think Greg Slaughter has improved a lot under Toroman's tutelage.

Is Greg improving a lot?
When I first saw him playing in CCL he was like an improved version of EJ Feihl..
But i hope that he improved a lot since then..
He is still young..
I also hope that there are still room for his development..:):):)

Wow even with fever, Greg was able to convert a dunk shot after he himself made a steal. That's a great improvement from a player who was one dimensional before.

What I really want to see from GS in a couple of years.

1. Increase in upper body strength to bang bodies.
2. Stronger legs, so he can jump higher and can really play above the rim.
3. A decent 12 to 15 feet jump shot or maybe more.
4. A hook shot like those of Kareen Abdul Jabbar.
5. And an above average free throw shooter.

If he can have all of these, he's ready.:D;)

being an advocate of a taller philippine squad, this is music to my ears. i hope greg develops the body of a young asi taulava in two years.

I know it would take years to develop an Ali Peak or Eric Menk -like body, but a Benjie Paras or even a Billy Mamaril-like physique would do than his baby fat-full body right now.

Greg, di ka na tatangkad pa ... so HIT THE WEIGHTS ROOM and PUMP SOME IRON!!!

This is good news
He is getting better under Toroman and it shows 29pts even while sick
I also agree he should lift weights, everyone playing competative basketball should lift weights to tone those basketball muscles and to get more endurance aerobic excercises are good too
It is a myth thinking you will not grow when you do weights, in the contrary you will get more bone and muscle mass you might even get taller while getting bigger
All of this training should be supervised by a trainer that is knowledgeable
different sports need different training routines
Good luck Greg, hope you get better and become a complete player, the NT needs you

Thats a good news i think with greg slaughter slowly improving under toroman...5 yrs from now he might be ready to play in the PBA..but in tougher international level pls don't expect him to carry at least half the load of our national team in his shoulder like Iran's Hamed Haddadi. A dominating center is what we badly needed of course and an excellent playmaker to run the floor..

Well, if those statistics will be our basis for his improvement against smaller guys, I can safely say that he's now learning to use his actual size to his advantage. What I want to see soon is how he can play above his size against stronger and taller opponents.

I don't expect to see GS do some fancy moves, all I want to see is he bulks up put a lot of muscles, with these in mind, he can be our "Rebounding Devil" fearless and intimidating inside the paint and from thereon, he can with confidence will soon be able to create his own shots.

Tall as he is, at 6-foot-11 he is still small compared by international standards. I think, he needs to develop the hook shot in his shooting arsenal even a guy taller than him would find it difficult to block that shot. I'm pretty sure you would agree on this.

And one more thing, I don't want him to be like Shaq when it comes to free throws.:D that will be disastrous.:D;)

^^ to add to that GS also had 3 blocks 13 rebounds and 3 assist.. while playing sick..
as stated in this site
http://www.istorya.net/forums/basketball/205094-cesafi-2009-a-121.html

He actually had 18 rebounds total versus USC, 9 offensive and 9 defensive. As what dreamwalker mentioned, he's learned to use his size against smaller guys. USC's starting center is 6'0 while their tallest player is 6'3.

Against Fajardo he had 14 points and 4 rebounds although he was used sparingly in that game
