Another news of hope for RP Guys
Young Man Stands Tall
The official draw for FIBA 33 (Basketball) and Football were finalized on the morning of May 22 2009, at the Gold and Silver Rooms of the Singapore Sports Council Headquarters. 19 boys' teams and 16 girls' teams were separated into four initial groups (A to D) in their separate categories for FIBA 33 (Basketball).
In both Boys and Girls categories, Singapore will be meeting basketball powerhouses, India (IND) and the People's Republic of China (CHN). Mr. Seah Liang Bing, competition manager for the Asian Youth Games (AYG) FIBA 33 (Basketball), believes that home ground advantage will increase Singapore's chances.
However, India has proven to a worthy adversary in the 3-on-3 basketball court in the last Bali Asian Beach Games 2008. China's performance, on the other hand, remains to be seen, although they have proven to be traditionally very strong in the regular 5-on-5 basketball.
Mr. Seah says that it is now important to go back to think of strategies to undertake when encountering such strong teams. He adds that the Singapore team has been following a strong training regime in preparation for the Games, including having internal friendly matches with the adult national team at the Singapore Basketball Centre.
The national squad for Singapore has not been finalised but candidates have been narrowed down.
In the other groups of the Boys category, if the Bali Asian Beach Games 2008 are any indicator, expect to see strong competition in Group A between Malaysia (MAS) and Thailand (THA), and in Group C between the Philippines (PHI) and Japan (JPN).
For the girls, Group A will also see Malaysia (MAS) and Thailand (THA) go head-to-head, while the game between the traditional rivals in all sports, Japan (JPN) and the Republic of Korea (KOR), should prove to be a worthwhile game to watch.
The final draw results are as follows:
Group A (Boys)
- Malaysia (MAS)
- Palestine (PLE)
- Thailand (THA)
- United Arab Emirates (UAE)
- Bangladesh (BAN)
Group B (Boys)
