Young Man Stands Tall

The official draw for FIBA 33 (Basketball) and Football were finalized on the morning of May 22 2009, at the Gold and Silver Rooms of the Singapore Sports Council Headquarters. 19 boys' teams and 16 girls' teams were separated into four initial groups (A to D) in their separate categories for FIBA 33 (Basketball).

In both Boys and Girls categories, Singapore will be meeting basketball powerhouses, India (IND) and the People's Republic of China (CHN). Mr. Seah Liang Bing, competition manager for the Asian Youth Games (AYG) FIBA 33 (Basketball), believes that home ground advantage will increase Singapore's chances.

However, India has proven to a worthy adversary in the 3-on-3 basketball court in the last Bali Asian Beach Games 2008. China's performance, on the other hand, remains to be seen, although they have proven to be traditionally very strong in the regular 5-on-5 basketball.

Mr. Seah says that it is now important to go back to think of strategies to undertake when encountering such strong teams. He adds that the Singapore team has been following a strong training regime in preparation for the Games, including having internal friendly matches with the adult national team at the Singapore Basketball Centre.

The national squad for Singapore has not been finalised but candidates have been narrowed down.

In the other groups of the Boys category, if the Bali Asian Beach Games 2008 are any indicator, expect to see strong competition in Group A between Malaysia (MAS) and Thailand (THA), and in Group C between the Philippines (PHI) and Japan (JPN).

For the girls, Group A will also see Malaysia (MAS) and Thailand (THA) go head-to-head, while the game between the traditional rivals in all sports, Japan (JPN) and the Republic of Korea (KOR), should prove to be a worthwhile game to watch.

The final draw results are as follows:

Group A (Boys)
- Malaysia (MAS)
- Palestine (PLE)
- Thailand (THA)
- United Arab Emirates (UAE)
- Bangladesh (BAN)

Group B (Boys)
- Sri Lanka (SRI)
- Nepal (NEP)

FIBA 33: Don't Get Bounced Out

The standardised rules of FIBA 33 (Basketball) are simple because they are relatively close to those of regular basketball. Teams of four (three court players, and one substitute), headed by a coach, battle each other out within a half-court area for three five-minute periods.

It begins with a jump ball at the free throw line and the first team to score 33 points or has a lead over the other by the end of the third period, wins the game. If there is a tie, extra two-minute periods will be added until a clear winner prevails and the tie is broken at the end of the extra period.

The unique point of FIBA 33 (Basketball) is that, after getting possession, 14 seconds is given to attempt a shot for a field goal. The 14-second shot clock restarts when a defensive team out-manoeuvres the offensive team to gain control of the ball.

But take note, the ball has to be brought out of the three-point line; after which, it has to pass through the hands of at least two players (the one who dribbled/received the ball out of the three-point line and one other teammate), before a goal shot can be attempted.

Watch out for the boys' teams from India (IND), The Philippines (PHI) and Malaysia (MAS) and the girls' teams from Japan (JPN), Thailand (THA) and India (IND). These teams clinched the medals in the recent Bali Asian Beach Games in October 2008 with spectacular wins.

3-on-3 basketball, or street ball as some call it, had been recently adopted by FIBA and renamed to FIBA 33 (Basketball). The association realised its potential to reach out to even more enthusiasts and make the international basketball scene even more competitive and relevant to smaller countries. Its origin from the street makes it an extremely popular sport amongst youths, which is a perfect fit for AYG.

The Asian Youth Games (AYG) FIBA33 competition, for both Boys and Girls, will consist of a Preliminary Round (Round Robin), Quarterfinals, Semi-finals and Finals:

In the Preliminary Round (Round Robin)--
All participating teams will be divided into four groups (A,B,C and D). Each Team will play all the other teams in its own group (round-robin). The 2 highest ranked teams in each group will qualify for the Quarterfinals.

In the Quarterfinals--
The 8 teams qualified from the Preliminary Round will play in the Quarterfinals as follows:
Quarterfinal 1 (Q1): Group A Winner vs Group C Runner-up
Quarterfinal 2 (Q2): Group B Winner vs Group D Runner-up
Quarterfinal 3 (Q3): Group C Winner vs Group A Runner-up
Quarterfinal 4 (Q4): Group D Winner vs Group B Runner-up

In the Semi-finals--

The 4 winning teams in the Quarterfinals will play in the Semi-finals as follows:
Semi-final 1: Winner of Q1 vs Winner of Q2
Semi-final 2: Winner of Q3 vs Winner of Q4

In the Finals--
The 2 winning teams in the Semi-finals will play in the Finals. The winning team in the finals will be awarded the Gold Medal and the losing team will be awarded the Silver Medal. The 2 losing teams in the Semi-finals will play-off for the Bronze Medal.

Not quite. We won that game by disqualification after two of Uzbekistan's players fouled out leaving only a single player in the court. The Uzbeks only have three players. As such, we won 2-0.

Wow this is confusing to me ...... but a win is a win plus that's good for our team since we would remain unbeaten. MABUHAY ang TEAM PILIPINAS !!!!

The boys just won their match against Jordan. RP is undefeated in Group C with a record of 4-0. They will face either thailand or uae in the quarters. Good luck to our boys!
