TROPANG TEXTERS - undoubtedly one of the worst monickers in Philippine Basketball history, 2nd 3rd or 4th only to MANG INASALS

Alaska is the team to beat this coming PBA Conference.

They have just the right blend of veterans and young guns. Alaska has all the positions filled up and has got the height, speed and fire power to defeat any team in the PBA. They even had a good game against a "2-import-powered Korean team" in one of their preseason games wherein they lost by a small margin.

They have a very quick distributor in LA Tenorio. Willie Miller will be their 1st option. The pure shooter Larry Fonacier will be their Zone Buster. Cariaso will be their seasoned veteran who can help the team with his basketball IQ and experience. Coach Tim Cone has the privilege of using Reynel Hugnatan in the wings because of their tall front line in Devance (PF) and Thoss (C). Expect an improvement in the statistics of Joe Devance since the pressure for him to score won't be that big as compared to his days in Welcoat where he took hurried shots because he was expected to score a lot.

They also have a good bench in John Ferriols, newly aquired Borboran, etc..

If only Siot Tanquincen can intelligently utilize SMB, then the Beermen is among the top teams in the 2008-09 PBA season. The acquisition of Jay Washington is a big leap for SMB, a big help boost off the bench and a big help just in case injuries hit Danny Seigle once again. Washington and Marc Pingris brings in a lot of energy for the Beermen. I hope Siot won't waste much of the time on the aging Seigle.

Willie Miller shines as Aces down Giants in tuneup

Willie Miller put on display the kind of game that made him the league’s two-time MVP, scoring 21 points as the Alaska Aces stayed unbeaten in the PBA Pre-Season tournament with an 88-71 rout of the Purefoods TJ Giants on Monday at the Arellano University gym.

In a game that featured lots of running and banging in the lane, the Aces asserted their dominance against the equally tough Giants and led by as many as 24 points.

Their second win moved the Aces within a win of sweeping Group A and return to the finals of the tournament they ruled three years ago.

Alaska plays Barangay Ginebra (0-1) on Wednesday at the Emilio Aguinaldo College gym.

After a scoreless first quarter, Miller picked his rhythm in the second as Alaska pulled away. The charismatic guard made 8-of-19 attempts including 5-of-9 from the 3-point range and also dished six assists in 35 minutes on the floor.

Alaska’s improved frontline rotation of Joe Devance, Sonny Thoss, Irvin Sotto, John Ferriols and Reynel Hugnatan were also a sight to behold. They kept Kerby Raymundo and the rest of Purefoods’ biggies away from the lane with tenacious defense and strong rebounding.

Devance, acquired from Rain or Shine via a trade, scored 15 points and Sonny Thoss added 12 for the Aces who took a 57-24 advantage early in the third quarter.

Raymundo had 15 points on 5-of-15 shooting and Jun Simon contributed 18 for the Giants, who shot just 24-of-62 in the absence of injured star James Yap.

Yap sprained his ankle Saturday during their game against Ginebra won the Purefoods, 83-82.

The scores:

Alaska 88 – Miller 21, Devance 15, Thoss 12, Cariaso 11, Tenorio 7, DelaCruz 6, Fonacier 5, Ferriols 4, Sotto 4, Hugnatan 3.

Purefoods 71 – Raymundo 19, Simon 18, Robinson 10, Villanueva 9, Aban 4, Belga 4, Lanete 2, Bugia 2, Alonzo 0, Fernandez 0.

Quarters: 19-15; 50-33; 70-55; 88-71

Beermen take defeat to Egypt five in stride

DOHA—Never mind that San Miguel Beer lost two of its three exhibition matches here, the last a 69-60 decision to the Egypt national team on Saturday night (Sunday morning in Manila).

It was more important for coach Siot Tanquingcen to be able to gauge the strengths and weaknesses of the Beermen with the start of the Philippine Basketball Association’s 39th season less than two weeks away.

He also found the experience a perfect bonding time among the mainstays, new recruits Mike Cortez, Ken Bono and Jay Washington and rookie Bonbon Custodio.

“Defense is one aspect that we should improve on,” said Tanquingcen. “We are also experimenting on new offensive patterns. I don’t expect us to be at peak level come [the PBA’s] opening day [on Oct. 4] but we soon will be if we’ll just be patient.”

The Beermen bowed to the Qatar nationals on Thursday night, 71-62, before beating Qatar club Al Sadd, 62-33, the next night.

“It would’ve been more fruitful, especially for the fans, had we won all our matches,” said Tanquingcen. “But it was a good learning experience. Too bad we weren’t a complete team here.”

Danny Ildefonso, Lordy Tugade and Mick Pennisi failed to join the trip.

Ildefonso is still in the United States after an operation on his feet. Tugade is recovering from a knee injury and Pennisi had a previous commitment. Marc Pingris played against Qatar but flew home right after the match to attend a family affair.

Against the Egyptian nationals, the Beermen never took the lead and were able to tie the match just twice, at 2-all and 26-all, midway in the second period.

A 9-0 run by Egypt had the Filipinos trailing again by nine, 35-26. The closest the Beermen could get to the lead was 40-35 on back-to-back baskets by Dondon Hontiveros and Custodio.

Filipinos here left the match with more than just memories and pictures of and with the Beermen. Some of the lucky ones managed to get the jerseys, playing shoes, towels and T-shirts of the players.

Danny Seigle was listless for most part of the four-nation invitational tournament and Tanquingcen said the 6-foot-7 shooting forward only joined two pre-season practice sessions with the Beermen before they arrived in Doha.

The scores:
EGYPT 69—Ghanim 14, Ammal 12, Saharty 11, Kerdany 9, Badr 7, Genady R. 6, Khassid 4, Elenen 2, Genady S. 2, Adly 2, Said 0.
SMB 60—Hontiveros 14, Cortez 11, Pena 9, Custodio 8, Bono 8, Gonzales 4, Villanueva 3, Washington 2, Seigle 1, Racela 0, Calaguio 0.
Quarters: 25-17; 44-38; 60-47; 69-60

WOW....SMB gave Egypt NT a scare...

are they good? i mean, i havent heard from them in international tournaments..

Egypt competes at the African Zone. They have been champions several times but the Sub-saharan countries like Angola, Nigeria, Senegal, Cameroon, Cape Verde and Mali had improved in recent years but still Egypt manages to fight within the top 4 positions in FIBA-Africa.

In the Arab Championshipship, Egypt is usually one of the finalists. The competition includes Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and UAE.

In the 2008 FIBA Rankings for Men after the Olympics, Egypt is ranked 35 worldwide while its ranked 4th in the African Zone after Angola, Nigeria and Algeria.

Here's how Teams from Asia were ranked worldwide:

10. China
23. Iran
24. Lebanon
26. South Korea
27. Qatar
33. Japan
40. Chinese Taipei
41. Kazakhstan
42. Jordan
46. India
46. Syria
52. Kuwait
53. Hong Kong
54. Uzbekistan
61. Malaysia
63. Philippines
64. United Arab Emirates
64. Indonesia
66. Saudi Arabia
69. Thailand
70. Singapore

But we all know the reason why the Philippines is ranked really low is that we don't usually send our best team/players and that we don't compete that much internationally as the countries do.

Wow, Malaysia is ranked higher than us, even if they always get whipped by our amateur team in the SEA Games.

A nine point win by Egypt is not acceptable under the club-NT situation. They (Egypt) should've beaten us by 20 or more because they were better than Qatar, who beat us by 11.

RED BULL IN SURPRISINGLY EASY DRUBBING OF COCA-COLA

Hopefuls Hubalde, Cruz lead Barakos

Wednesday, 24 September 2008

Red Bull coach Yeng Guiao believes his relatively young team can keep up with any team in the league when it comes to a running game.

But he also acknowledged their deficiency in size easily exposes his team to mismatches, particularly against big teams like San Miguel, Alaska and Talk N Text.

"We became quicker but we also happen to be the smallest (team) in the league so we anticipate lots of match-up problems," he said.

Size though didn't seem to matter for the Barakos on Tuesday against Asi Taulava and the Coca-Cola Tigers as Red Bull scored a lopsided 98-81 victory in the PBA Pre-Season Tournament at the Jose Rizal University gym.

Paolo Hubalde poured in 14 points and rookie free agent Nats Cruz, hoping to land a spot on Red Bull's roster, added 10 for the Barakos, who surprisingly dominated the Tigers throughout the match.

Forward Gabby Espinas, acquired from Air21 in exchange for the Barakos' 2009 first round pick, grabbed 11 boards as Red Bull outrebounded Coca-Cola, 45-44, and closed out its pre-season outing with an even 1-1 record in Group B.

Red Bull offset its deficiency in height with good ball rotation, standout defense and constant hustling.

Taulava led all scorers with 21 points although he showed signs of slowing down, prompting observers to wonder whether the 35-year-old former MVP nicknamed "The Rock" could still keep up with the rigors of the game against the league's rising young big men.

Backcourt tandem Ronjay Buenafe and Alex Cabagnot contributed 13 and 12 points, respectively, for the Tigers, who trailed by as many as 20 points and never got closer than 10 late in the fourth quarter.

The scores:

Red Bull 98 –Hubalde 14, Cruz N.10, Duncil 9, Alvarez 9, Rodriguez 8, Solis 8, Baguio 7, Chan 7, Ybanez 6, Espinas 5, Najorda 5, Sharma 4, Membrere 3, Cruz C. 1, Hrabak 0.

Coca-Cola 81 – Taulava 21, Buenafe 13, Cabagnot 12, Calimag 10, Caceres 7, Baguion 6, Bonus 3, Rizada 3, Telan 2, Dimaunahan 2, Arigo 2, Macapagal 0, Enrile 0.

With Dilinger having great stats than Norwood in NCAA.. who do you think guys is much better?

for me it's not only the stats, whoever makes his teamates better with his brand of play and is a consistent contributor is the better guy. NCAA Stats are like Grades in your Transcript, it helps you get the job but on how to keep the job is based on how you actually perform your work.

Gabe Norwood is a more athletic player than Dillinger.
but Dillinger is a more accurate shooter than Norwood.
