Interbasket's Fifth Anniversary

Today, August 27th, 2008, is Interbasket's fifth anniversary.

I can't believe that it's been five years.

Some days it seems as if it's been longer than it (technically it has been, read more below), and some days it seems like it was just yesterday I sat down (virtually, of course) with Matt, CFFI and a couple others talking about whether we should create an international basketball forum.

History
InterBasket began in August 2003, but saw much more humble beginnings back in July of 2001 as a Arvydas Sabonis Yahoo Group (link). I had created the group so that fans of the great Lithuanian center could all gather in one common place to discuss anything and everything about the European legend.

Rough Beginnings
It was essentially myself and Janis (Crazy Fan From Idaho) posting responses to each other’s threads. A kid with the username Young Sabas introduced himself, and showed up here and there, but it was just Janis and I for the first year — chatting with each other on Yahoo’s archaic message board.

In mid-2003, I began seeing more and more members to the Yahoo group signing up from around the world. No longer were fans coming from Lithuania, but members were signing up from Spain, Russia, China, Italy, and more.

I thought to myself If there are so many people that want to talk about Arvydas Sabonis, why not Peja Stojakovic or Dirk Nowitzki? And that basically was the beginning of Ibn.

Thanks to IBN Members
Special thanks to all the great moderators that started out as fantastic members - Mvblair, CFFI, Zalg, Sino, JCN, NaF, Matiz, Josean, sariss, Trif, and any others that I may have missed.

I definitely want to thank ALL the members that has made the forum it is today, the members of this forum are what makes it what it is today and will continue to shape, evolve and grow this forum into what I like to believe is one of the more intelligent forums online, and certainly one of the most unique sports websites on the planet. Cheers to all of you and happy birthday Interbasket...

Stuart and his team ... thank you very much for all your hard work and good job controlling this forum, even when the tempers fly high sometimes.

Interbasket is the best forum for international basketball. Because of the users, who have created some threads with such high quality that you'd rarely find anything alike on the net, let alone the print media, and because of the admin/mod team.

Happy anniversary, IBN.

Happy birthday, Interbasket! And may the 5 years become 10, 20, 30..
Thanks to all admins, mods and simple members who contributed to make this forum simply the best one around..!

FELIZ CUMPLEANIOS!!!! ... HAPPY BIRTHDAY IBN!!! ... it's amazing to have a discussion forum that brings so many people from all over the world together!!!... ONE LOVE, ONE GAME!!! ... BASKETBALL!!! :D

Stuart, thanks so much for putting this website together. I know it sounds silly, but I really enjoy reading about all the great basketball leagues around the world and everyone who makes the game work. Stuart, you've given us a "home" in which we can argue and learn. I know it hasn’t been easy for you. You’ve changed servers so many times, dealt with blackouts, racists, and storage space issues. But you’ve really made this an incredible website. I appreciate it, buddy. You've been great to us.

And congratulations to everyone at InterBasket.Net, whether you're the first member or the newest!! The people who come here for honest discussion make it such a great place.

There are so many fun discussions going on at IBN on any given day. Over the years, we’ve had discussions about basketball in Nepal, Philadelphia, prisons, Kuanas, the Philipines, India, Samoa, Abidjian, Paris, high school, Egypt, wheelchair leagues, and, well, just about everywhere in the world.

I especially want to say “thank you” to everybody who posts about topics that might not be very popular, such as you national league or a relatively unknown league. I really appreciate everyone who continues to provide us with information about their own favorite league. Even if you’re the only person posting and giving news about your local league, I appreciate it. Some of you are very dedicated and that’s just great for our favorite sport. Thank you for keeping those long discussions going.

Most importantly, we’ve had great basketball fans make friends, argue, and provide great insight. There are some smart posters at IBN, and they really make this site work.
