Problems with the Youth potentials

Problems with the Youth potentials

I think Coach Franz has done a great job in recruiting the players from the RPYT the only problem is,some of the shoe-ins have been playing with their College varsity teams and they wouldn't lend them to the greater cause which is the RP youth team.Actually it's the players who made the decision not to play considering they know they have another commitment. It's just sad to see potentials not being used.I think that RPYT is an insurance of the Fil-Foreign player's commitment for Team Philippines.I just get disappointed knowing that Fil-Foreign players are more willing to play in the team.Anyways I still hope we could scout a big potential somewhere.

Dang..he's too old na..hehehe If there is an U-21 then he is qualified
As I konw In asia there are not FIBA Asia U20 or U21 Championship .:)

The only Youth Championship around asia is the Asia U18 Championship .

This is simply superb. I would love to see how Norbert Torres plays against the best big men in the country, even if only on practice games. These games I gotta watch whenever I can.

Games against tougher teams would also help prepare the players MENTALLY, enabling to withstand & play better against pressure.

Tough Test Ahead For RP-Nokia 5

By Reuben Terrado
Correspondent

TUNE-UP games against Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) teams are one of the plans for the RP-Nokia Youth Team as it prepares for the Fiba-Asia Youth Championship in Tehran from August 28 to September 5.

Team captain Frank Golla said the tune-up games were similar to the ones they did before the Southeast Asian Basketball Association Championship for Young Men in Kuala Lumpur two weeks ago. To prepare for the Kuala Lumpur tournament, they faced collegiate and Philippine Basketball League squads.

Only this time, the 18-year-old Golla said national youth coach Franz Pumaren will go further by pitting them against professional teams.

“The tune-up games will help us a lot if they will push through because we will get a chance to play against veteran players. It is an advantage playing against them, instead of playing against our same age,” said Golla, as he represented the team during Tuesday’s Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum at the Shakey’s United Nation’s Avenue.

Gabriel Banal, who joined Golla in the forum, said the coaching staff is concentrating on its conditioning as the task at hand in the Fiba-Asia becomes tougher.

“Our opponents are bigger and stronger. We have to play a run-and-gun game to counter the strengths of our opponents,” said Banal, 17, son of Alaska assistant coach Joel Banal and a cousin of Golla.

Iran reportedly has a seven-foot-six center on its national youth team, while China, Japan, South Korea and Chinese Taipei are perennial contenders in the tournament, which is a qualifying event for the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore in 2010.

The Nationals, who are backed by Nokia and TAO Corp., headed by Julio Sy Jr., are taking a break before heading to conditioning and weight training on May 19. They will head back to practice two weeks after.

Filipino-Canadian Norberto Torres and Filipino-American Kyle Pascual have returned abroad to attend to their studies but will return in time for the preparation for the Asian meet.

The Nokia-RP Youth booked swept its way to the SEABA Championships for Young Men in Kuala Lumpur.

really? Matching them against the pros would be nice but first they must beat first a PBL team before they can say that they're ready for the Fiba Asia U18

if they are getting experience playing against the pros, then i do not see why the RP youth team cannot play in the Jones Cup ! the Jones cup is just for ego tripping wins and has no bearing on FIBA tournaments so might as well use the jones cup to sharpen our national teams that need it in the case right this moment, its the RP youth team that needs the experience !

by the way, is this year's jones cup before or after the FIBA Asia u18 tournament which starts in August 28 ??

not yet... but I still agree on having Ray Parks in our team.. I don't care if his young.. the earlier he hones his skill, the better.

As for the Jones Cup, I have mixed reactions. First and foremost, if we compete in that tournament then our Youth NT will be scouted which will undermine our chances for a better finish. On the other hand, we should compete if and only other Youth NTs are competing which will allow us to scout them as well.

2007 FIBA Asia Champions Iran could participate in the coming Jones Cup which is a month away before the Olympics.

A Jones Cup stint for our Youth team would not hurt if they could be scouted. It will be good for the boys. The Jones Cup, logistically, is not that distant from us. Unless they have the money and train in Europe, Canada, US etc hidden from all of our asian counterparts.

welcome aboard, hey can u help us in finding tall Fil-Cans in the area, we really need taller players here especially for youth team

I'm always on the lookout! I would love to help guide them to scholarships in the NCAA D1 or 2 schools, and eventually onto represent the country. What type of players does the youth team need? Bangers? Athletic wings who can do both? What's our style of play? What age is the youth team exactly? Sorry for all the questions, I'm just getting my feet wet when it comes to learning about the system in the homeland.

some of us havent seen their game but I think what the teams really lacks is the height against their asian counterparts. there's a kid in the team thats also from Canada, he's norbert torres he's around 6'7, if u can find taller Fil-Cans theres and you are the saviour of the youth team.
