"This is how Barcelona prevented the appointment of Blatt as CSKA coach"
A few hours before the final game CSKA announced the resigning of Ettore Messina for one more season with an option for another, but as it turns out, there was a not so little drama behind the scenes. A Euroleague insider, very close to Messina, told that in fact the Italian coach had all the financial terms settled for a three year contract. But aside the financial issue, Messinca demanded to fire Zoran Savic, who indeed received word that his vested authority as GM are from now on no longer valid, and he will leave at the end of the season, and Messina turned in the names of two candidates for the job.
But in Barcelona they stalled. Barca bball is not ran efficiently and Messina didn't received an answer to this demand and also the requested signing of two new players, one of them, apparently, is Mathias Smodish. When he understood that Barca isn't going to reply, Messina gave an ultimatum until last Friday, but still no answer was received. During that day Messina approached the chiefs of CSKA and announced his will to stay. The new contract was signed the next day and the team decided to announce it just before the final.
Reporters from Russia close the team were very surprised from this announcement. They could tell that CSKA was in an aquard status at the coach position. Until two months ago David Blatt was considered the leading candidate for the coach position , but his sacking from Efes Pilsen hurt his exclusivity for the role. Blatt, as like Pini Gershon, is now out of work, but in the end they are both expected to coach premium European clubs.
The one that is expected to leave CSKA is David Andersen, that for all that is known, has an arrangement with the Atlanta Hawks for the following years, and if so, Messinca will have to look for a replacement for one of his key players (A.P.-I guess this player will be D. Lavrinovic).
The future of Nevan Spahija is also unclear and there are high chances that he will leave the club. In Tau, as like Maccabi of the last year, he is very much appreciated as a person, but far less of that as a coach. Basque reporters that accompanied the team told that the owners are not satisfied from the way the team is functioning and that Spahija didn't make the best out of his squad.
