UAAP season 87

Marasigan turns 21 this March.

Is there an age limit for the players' "1st-playing-year?" 21 yr old rookies are becoming too common. It's being timed for the 25 yr old limit.

Seems like if the age limit in college is 30, we will have 26 year old freshman rookies.

Penny is about to have a "Bolick" type kind of career in San Beda.

I dont see Penny as similar to Bollick. But to me Bollick is our best homegrown PG right now. At 6’1 his handles, shooting and driving I think is the best for a homegrown. Yes, better than Scotties. My question is, what position did he play in the UAAP? I doubt PG. What prompted him to play PG in the NCAA? Obviously he couldve played SG.

PG is his natural.position when he was still in Ormoc. He did alternate SG/PG duties in LSGH and DLSU.
in the NCAA CJJ also altetnated him as PG/SG with Dan Sara as the main PG. Its only under CBF that he played full time PG.

This is what I meant when I said that "point ____" can now come from any position.

Bolick in NBTC playing for his provincial HS team played as their "point center." He was their biggest player so he was center on D, but he was also the most skilled/best ballhandler so he was their point on offense. So initially in college (DLSU), he had to do a lot of adjusting and was still figuring out what his game would really be. It was in SBU that he (and the coaches) finally figured it out. He was a point all along and just had to figure out the D part.

Positional-labels are more for defense now (especially for non-switching lineups) while offense should be position-less.

He should thank his Ormoc coach for letting him be the point during that crucial phase even though he was big.

This is true for Bolick when he was still.with Ormoc. He played guard on offense but dutied as a center on defense.

His Ormoc high school coach was very progressive. It's rare allowing your biggest player be the lead ballhandler. Especially in the Philippines.

IMO age limit should be strictly imposed in the juniors. We see 20 yr olds in the juniors. IMO it should be 18 yrs old and ShS should be allowed to compete as freshman in the seniors.

Is the 7 year rule still being imposed in the Uaap?

I agree with that age limit in the juniors. It should be U19, if you ask me. Anyone above that age, whether in HS or college, should be competing with the seniors.

is there a philippine law that puts an age limit for someone to attend high school or college?

No. Why should there be? Some of these guys don’t make the UAAP line up their first few years so understandable that they are already 21/22 when they first play.

Marasigan is not like Hubilla of UP who is still in HS. He’s already in college.

Why? Same reason as other age limit rules, to keep ages in check.

Majority of the time, young rooks don't make line up exactly because there are so many other older guys. Don't be naive, a lot of schools and players game the system and time themselves to be the oldest allowed possible.

Yes, about 19 for HS sounds reasonable.

Do we even still have those 20 y/o high schoolers playing in the uaap jrs now? In the ncaa we'll know once the jrs basketball opens in feb. I mean in the past years, its pretty understandable due to the pandemic, but 2-3 years after, those guys should have moved on to college already. I think most of the 21-22 y/o rookies we see in college today are mostly team A rejects thats spent time with their school's team b, spent time in residency, recovering from an injury or sabbatical from basketball.
