would getting javale be a sure ticket to spain?

i mean, the cost is ultra high but he is unstoppable here in asia. i can imagine how easy it would be for the national team to beat the powerhouses with him at the middle.

... we don't even have to go to lithuania

if this is true, then lebanon will also have a collateral damage in the name of Julian Khazouh..i believe that he only knew about lebanon and his lineage a couple of years ago..Ryan Reyes is a big loss but if only Ganuelas can improved to the next level, then Reyes absence would not matter..

But if we are to believe the statements of Lebanese posters, Julian Khazzouh is said to have proof that he laid claim of his Lebanese citizenship be4 he turned 16 years old. Plus, we have to remember, Hagop is Lebanese.

Belga eyes Gilas call-up: 'Kahit libre sa national team, okay ako - basta may pagkain'

Beau Belga on a possible call-up from Gilas: “Gusto ba nila ako? Nag-aantay lang din naman ako ng mga tawag-tawag eh ... Hindi naman siguro ako madedehado." Jerome Ascano
FOLLOWING his splendid back-to-back performances with the PBA All-Star selection, burly Rain or Shine forward Beau Belga is keeping his fingers crossed the coaching staff of Gilas Pilipinas has taken notice.

“Sana napanood nila `yung games namin,” said the wide-bodied, 225-lb. big man.

The former Philippine Christian University star once suited up for the national team during the 2007 Southeast Asian Games in Thailand, where he played alongside Rain or Shine teammates Gabe Norwood, Jeff Chan, and Jervy Cruz.

And now he hopes it's not too late in the day for a call-up from the Gilas team that has seen two players in Kelly Williams and Jared Dillinger dropped from its original 17-man pool due to health issues.

"Pangarap ko talaga mag national team ulit eh," said the Painters banger. “Kahit libre ako sa national team, okay ako. Walang problema sa akin … basta may pagkain na buffet.”

Turning serious, he added: “Gusto ba nila ako? Nag-aantay lang din naman ako ng mga tawag-tawag eh. Kabisado ko naman ang takbuhan ng international game. Hindi naman siguro ako madedehado."

The underrated center has impressed in games against Gilas and the visiting Shanghai Sharks, holding his own against the Chinese big men in the shaded lane and giving them problems on defense with his ability to hit the open three-pointer.

Given another shot at donning the national colors, Belga said he will be happy to accept any role given him.

“Kahit hindi ako patirahin. Depensa, rebound, at hustle lang ako, masaya na ko nun,” he said.

Rain or Shine team co-owner Raymund Yu has long insisted that Belga can be a big asset to the national team and on Thursday reiterated his offer to release him to Chot Reyes' pool.

“Noon ko pa naman sinasabi sa inyo, di ba? Talagang pang national team material si Beau,” said Yu. “Maraming roles na pwedeng gawin si Beau. Magandang pang-bantay sa malalaki ng ibang bansa.

"Sobrang talino ni Belga lumaro. Versatile pa,” Yu added.

For his part, Gilas team manager Bucth Antonio admitted being impressed with the performance of both Belga and All-Star teammate Arwind Santos in the match against the Yao Ming-owned Sharks.

“Yes we’re impressed. Pero like what I’ve mentioned before, it’s not automatic na porke may players na natanggal, we have to replace them right away,” said Antonio, who emphasized the decision rests on Reyes.

I just hope that coach chot will make the right decisions in choosing the players. All of the players in the current pool no doubt are national team material, but there are still players that can actually improve our team. I know that coach chot doesn't want to add players to the pool since it will be unfair for the others who were there from the start, but imo, we have to sacrifice this fairness if it would improve our team. Up to now, im still worried with our perimeter defense, especially ryan reyes (hopefully be considered) is not eligible.

I hope they consider cyrus baguio( who made a crucial block on james yap last night), i believe that cyrus is an underrated defender (remember the clean swipe on jason castro which was a top 5 plays recently). Ok some may say that he's an alaska player and there is sonny thoss already..but since many of us i believe that sonny is the odd man out in the bigmen..why not try cyrus baguio? Just a thought..And also, cyrus is also a good scorer and can make threes, also wreck offensively during his last stint in 2009 if im not mistaken..

While i am also very high on marcio lassiter, but he is also questionable in his eligibility, and also we already have junmar from petron, we all agree that fajardo is a sure in, so having lassiter has a lower chance.

NZ is playing in China (probably including the stankovic cup this July) as part of the Asian trip , which could include Manila. As part of the Phil and NZ discussuon for collabration is for NZ to help in as afar as scouting (hint , hint)

very nice.hehe.

i hope there will be an agreement between NZ Basketball Federation and the SBP just like what the China and Australia partnership for the national team.

But if we are to believe the statements of Lebanese posters, Julian Khazzouh is said to have proof that he laid claim of his Lebanese citizenship be4 he turned 16 years old. Plus, we have to remember, Hagop is Lebanese.

If Julian can produce a Lebanese Passport bearing his name that was issuance before he turned 15 years old, then he would be allowed to play.

When I Conferred with the DFA, not so many Filipinos upon migration declare legally with the Philippine Embassy or Consulate that they have a Filipino baby born overseas, more so secure a Philippine Passport for their Child. Filipinos who migrate overseas are usually more concerned into securing citizenship of their new adopted country for their whole family than having a thought that a member of their Family would like to retain Filipino Citizenship.

Then there are some who would not even declare their Filipino Ethnicity in their Overseas born baby's birth certificate. Then we have to contend that there is really a great number of Filipinos who are illegal migrants and are actually TNTs (Tagu-Ng-Tagu), and would rather not get in touch with the Philippine Embassy or Consulate.

I am not an expert on this, can somebody help me out. If one do migrate or gets petitioned to the United States, how many years does one need to get a Green Card and then from there how many years would it take to become an American Citizen?

No more additions to Gilas, says Reyes

No more additions to Gilas, says Reyes

No one else will be added to the Gilas Pilipinas pool.

This was the response of Gilas coach Chot Reyes when asked if replacements for Jared Dillinger and Kelly Williams are coming.

Dillinger was involved in a car accident last week and will be out for at least three months, while Williams has flown to the United States to seek treatment for a recurring blood disorder, trimming down the Gilas pool to just 15 with barely three months left before the FIBA-Asia Championship. Only 12 will make the final roster.

There had been talk about tapping Petron forward Arwind Santos and Air21 forward KG Canaleta as replacements, given the two players’ impressive play in recent weeks. Santos was named co-MVP of the PBA All-Star Game last Sunday in Digos, while Canaleta came on strong for the Express in their quarterfinal series against Alaska.

But Reyes quickly shot down these suggestions.

“The reason we had 17 in the first place is to provide for attrition,” said the multi-titled coach moments after his Gilas team beat the Shanghai Sharks at the MOA Arena. “Madali magdagdag, maski ilan ang idagdag natin pwede, pero paano babawasan sa dose? That’s the reason we’re not adding anymore to the pool.”

With Williams out, the Gilas power forward rotation has been reduced to San Mig’s Marc Pingris, TNT’s Ranidel De Ocampo and GlobalPort’s Japeth Aguilar, although Reyes also used June Mar Fajardo at the four spot against the Sharks.

Dillinger’s loss leaves TNT’s Larry Fonacier and Ryan Reyes, GlobalPort’s Gary David, and Rain or Shine’s Jeff Chan and Gabe Norwood contesting the swingman positions. Centers Marcus Douthit, Sonny Thoss of Alaska, and NLEX’s Greg Slaughter round up the 15-man pool.

Reyes didn't sound too worried about that, saying his main problem right now is not a lack of manpower but a lack of time to get his players to jell.

“We practice once a week,” he lamented. “Even in our once a week practice we just do shooting. But that will be addressed after the PBA conference ends.”

The ongoing Commissioner’s Cup is in the semifinal stage, and is expected to conclude in late May or early June, giving Reyes roughly two months to work with a complete crew.

We don’t know if those two months is enough to get the team in tip-top shape. The team is still to be built. But at least we are seeing people who just love to be there. We have five guys who just played a tough game ( Sunday) night in Davao, yet they showed up here. Those guys really love to be in the national team.”

Reyes was referring to David, Norwood, Chan, Fajardo and Aguilar, who all played in the All-Star Game that finished late Sunday night and had to endure a long and tiring trip back to Manila to make it back in time for Monday night's exhibition game.

When asked which Asian teams pose the biggest threat to the Philippines’ bid to nail a slot in next year’s FIBA World Cup, Reyes named China, Iran, Jordan and Lebanon as his top four, with the Philippines, Korea, Japan and Qatar in the next tier. “It’s no secret that China and Iran are the teams to beat,” he noted.

“The one thing we need to play is intuitive basketball,” the coach added, noting that the top four have been playing together for years.

move on. coach chot has already said no more additions.

Plus we know that Wilfred Uytengsu together with the San Miguel Group have a hard stance on the lending of PBA players.

Like it or not, we would live or die with the players currently on the pool. The Visas of the players going to Lithuania are now up for processing. Then the SBP is mandated to submit soon the Final List of 24 Players being considered for the FIBA-Asia Championship.

Against the ShangHAI Sharks

Slaughter - showed good defensive skills against the 7'3' . He was the best one one defensive player against the chinese center. quick hands during defense. " He is a "shoe in"

Aguilar - showed good offensive skills and help defense to get blocks. Can be better than K Will if he puts his mind into it. He is a "shoe in".

Fajardo - good rebounding and offensive skills. defensive skills needs to be improved since he has to guard much taller centers than him. "shoe in"

Douthit - needs to be in perfect game shape since he is Gilas' best player . "shoe in"

Now we got the bigs, we have to focus more on interior defense (help defense) and perimeter defense especially with good 3 point shooting teams. DDO needs to be improved which they will in time. We got perfect guards for it in norwood and castro. And the best player for pick and roll, Tenorio.

Watching the recent friendly games, here is my final 12;

PG - Tenorio, Castro

SS- Chan, Fonacier, David

SF - Norwood, Ping, Ranidel

PF- Aguilar, Douthit

C - Slaughter, Fajardo

i like your final lineup. hope no one gets injured specially during the tuneup games. really really pray for the health of our national team pool.

by the way guys. with the way belga has been playing as what we have seen in the exhibition games.

just hypothetically, if you were to decide and assuming belga would be part of the pool, would you replace Ping in favor of Belga for the final 12?

I would have liked what Beau can bring into Gilas but we know the door is now closed. Arwind and KG both have been vocal of their willingness also but Chot had already made a decision. But for discussion sake, if ever we are to add Belga, it is not in the place of Ping. The role envisioned by Chot for Marc is to be the designated defender for the Top Perimeter Scorer/Shooter of the opposing team. That is more so if ever Ryan Reyes is deemed ineligible. If ever the Coaching Staff fails to toughened-up Slaughter, Belga could have been a good option as he could play a very good Bruise Brother with Ranidel with both having a decent outside shot as far beyond the 3-point arc, that would give our Team a different look if needed.

Perimeter players of opposing teams that we need to play really tight defense are..

Iran - Samad Nikkah Bahrami
Lebanon - Fadi El Khatib
Jordan - Rasheim Wright
China - probably Wang Shi Peng if he plays, or Sun Yue

Can Pingris defend these guys? Thoughts?

Well I do feel he has the size and strength to do so even though he might be a bit lacking in speed, but when you assign him to do something, he has the perserverance and intensity to keep on trying to keep-up.

Ranidel might not be able to keep-up if they are always in motion.

Bahrami and Fadi is just too big for Ryan Reyes if ever. Height-wise and probably athletically Gabe is more a match but a bit soft when it comes to a push and shove game.

Fonacier and Chan are decent defenders but they're not stoppers.

David ......

He cant stop them for sure, but ping can limit them...ping is already used to guarding the opponent's best player (whatever position that player is) game in and game out...

I even remember there was a time Ping was assigned to defend the opposing team's point guard who was going berserk in offense, sure he did not stopped the guy but he slowed him down thus Marc helping his team get the W.

Sf like bahrami and el kattib yes. Who r not as quick, but not shooting guards like wright or korean shooters who move well of the ball. I would rather put the quicker gabe on these quicker players

HAHAHA cant stop laughing on the defender who looked at the ring after the shot fake. Makes you wonder if belga could bring his fake on the fiba level

I admire the defense and physicality of Beau. If he was part of the pool, I will still favor ping over him. I believe Ping is more agile to guard wing players or scorers. We need bigger shut down defenders of Pings size and physicality.
