The 18 team double elimination bracket is rare to see, but when it’s used, it’s certainly because a good tournament going on. This type of tournament using the double-elimination feeds directly on a great organization and a good set of teams willing to battle until their last breath. This type of tournament lets us explore the variants in a game at least two times. This means that one team that passes to the losers bracket, can be matched against its rival team (or the one that eliminated it from the winner’s bracket) on more than one occasion.

That is why the double system elimination is one of our favorites. Now, this type of system for tournaments, and specifically the ones with more than 16 teams poses a few difficulties.

The good, the bad, the ugly of the 18 D.E. bracket

The D.E. system with 18 teams is an organizational challenge. Why? Well, when there are more than 16 teams, the tournaments start advancing more slowly because twice the games take place. That means this tournament has at least 34 or 35 games.

This tournament starts with just two games in the first phase of the winner’s bracket. This means that only two of the four teams will go to the loser’s bracket. That is a kind of soft start.

Yes, it is great for a full season, but for quickness, it is not the most efficient, like the single-elimination version of the tournament. The 18 team D.E. tournament is worth it if you have a very strong fan base, whether you are an amateur league or for local small tournaments.
