How to Handle a 14-Team Bracket
Twelve team brackets don’t work out as smooth as a tournament with 4, 8, 16, 32, or 64 teams would. That’s because there not only needs to be an even number of teams, but an equal number of brackets into the next round. Unlike a 16-team bracket, a bracket with fourteen teams means that there would be an odd number of winning teams advancing into the second round. And that would mean one team wouldn’t have a match-up.
The usual fourteen team brackets has four rounds of games that end with one champion. In order to make the tournament progress smoothly, the top two seeds won’t have opponents in the first round. While the twelve lower seeds will have to fight it out if they want to advance to the second round.
