Debbie Black, Usa
Just to get an idea: "Miami Sol point guard Debbie Black smiled as the
boos rained down from the crowd at Madison Square Garden.Black's tenacious defense helped snap New York's eight-game home- court winning streak as the Sol won its franchise-high seventh straight, 68-52, in a contentious contest over the Liberty on Sunday in New York. As the first half ended with the Liberty down by 16 points, Teresa Weatherspoon shoved Black to the floor after missing a shot from halfcourt. Black caught up with Weatherspoon near the tunnel, and the two point guards were separated by 6-foot-3 Sue Wicks and security guards. Fans booed Black, who is known for her hard-nosed defense. "The more you boo me the better," Black said. "It's a compliment as far as I'm concerned. That means I'm doing something right." Black scored 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting, and added eight rebounds, four assists and four steals. Sheri Sam led the Sol with 17 points. Seven technical fouls were whistled in the game, including a pair of double technicals against Black and Weatherspoon and Tari Phillips and Sam during the halftime argument . "I went up to (Weatherspoon) and said, `Hey, that wasn't necessary,' " Black said. "That was all I said, I wasn't trying to fight her. There was nothing in that, other than I got a technical out of it." Ibn Quote: "I loved the ABL because it was seven months
out of the year. It was a full-time job with a great salary. Players didn't have
to go overseas; you stayed in one city because of length of the season. We were
more of a part of the community. The ABL was really developed for us, not on the
coattails of the men. But we need the help of the NBA to actually make it.
-- " ...Whether (Teresa Weatherspoon) wants to believe it or not, we are very similar. I only know her on the court. [The WNBA] was her league, but I came in. We are intense, physical, and very emotional. She isn't used to playing someone who plays her the way I play. There is an intense rivalry when we play each other. She tends to get more aggravated when we play ... possibly because she is playing someone exactly like her..." -- Debbie Black on her intense rivalry with New York Liberty's Teresa Weatherspoon |
Name: Debbie Black Nickname: The Pest, The Tasmanian Devil Born: July 29, 1966 Status: Retired as player April 13, 2005; Active as an assistant coach for the Ohio State University's women's basketball team. Origin: New Ulm, Minnesota and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Height: 5-3/1,60 Weight: 124lbs/80kg Schools: N/A Drafted: Inaugural player for the ABL; 1999, Second Round (ABL Dispersal), 15th overall by the Utah Starzz Languages: English Website: InterBasket Teams (jersey): St. Josephs University, Tasmanian Islanders (WNBL, 1989-96), Colorado Xplosion (#24, ABL), Miami Sol (24), Connecticut Sun (#24, WNBA) Ibn Notes: At 5-3, Debbie Black made up for her short stature with unending amounts of energy, relentless defense, and an indomitable spirit. While playing for the Tasmanian Islanders in the NBL (Australia's Women's Basketball League), Debbie Black was nicknamed the Tasmanian Devil because of the way she bounced around, fell on the floor, the way she terrorized her opponents on defense, and her overall reckless abandon. Though she is known throughout the many leagues that she has participated in (WNBL, ABL, WNBA) as an in-your-face defender, an excitable, fearless, and competitive spitfire, those adjectives are counter to the calm and consistent demeanor she upholds as Black is running her teams offense, consistently placing in the top of the league in assists-to-turnover ratio.
At St. Joseph's University, Debbie Black was a
multi-sport athlete, earning 12 varsity letters in basketball, field hockey, and
softball. Professionally, Black won two league titles in her eight years
in the WNBL (1991 and 1995), was named the ABL defensive player of the year in
1996-97 (also all-ABL second team) and then the WNBA defensive player of the
year in 2001. In an ABL game against
Teresa Edwards
and the Atlanta Glory, Debbie Black pulled off a unheard-of feat when she
recorded a quadruple-double - 10 points, 14 rebounds, 12 assists, 10
steals. |
