At least that’s what the 7-1 Serbian center told NBA Fanhouse:

“The NBA for me is not the way that I want to be,” said Milicic, “Looking forward, the stuff that I’m looking for is for me to play and for to me enjoy playing. I think right now the only spot for me is Europe.

Miličić, who was infamously selected second overall in a draft that included <a href="http://www.interbasket.net/news/tag/lebron-james/"target="_self"title="Related Interbasket Posts" >LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, has averaged 5.4 points and 4.0 rebounds in 17 minutes for his career.

“I’m not blaming other people,” Milicic said recognizing his place in NBA history. “I’m not crying about it. Basketball is just a game. And stuff happens. If I wasn’t the second pick, who knows what would have happened? If I was some other pick, you could look back and say what would have happened.

Still Darko is frustrated with the constant “bust” talk, especially when he believes he never got the opportunity to prove himself.

“I never understand why people are still talking about me as the second pick,” Milicic said. “But I never got a chance to play. Why take me as the second pick if you’re not going to play me for three years? They never let me get a chance. I still don’t get it … I never asked to be the second pick. I just wanted to play basketball.”

Currently, the 24-year old sits at the end of the Knicks bench, putting up 2.0 points and having played only eight of the sixteen games this season.

“Growing up and playing basketball, I needed the ball in my hands. I used to create for myself and I used to create for others. I used to play a lot. That’s the kind of stuff I’m looking for. And for me to get that in the NBA right now, I don’t think so. And I’ve got to be real.”

Miličić has played with the Detroit Pistons, winning an NBA Championship before being traded to Orlando. Darko played for the Memphis Grizzlies, along with other international centers <a href="http://www.interbasket.net/news/tag/hamed-haddadi/"target="_self"title="Related Interbasket Posts" >Hamed Haddadi and <a href="http://www.interbasket.net/news/tag/marc-gasol/"target="_self"title="Related Posts" >Marc Gasol. He was traded to the Knicks when Memphis drafted <a href="http://www.interbasket.net/news/tag/hasheem-thabeet/"target="_self"title="Related Posts" >Hasheem Thabeet.

New York may be his last NBA destination.

“I’m going to decide after this year what I’m going to do, stay here or go back to Europe and play. I will decide after this season is over” he continued. “I’ll go home and clear my mind … I’ll talk to the people that I care about and people who care about me.”

“Everything was fun before I got in Detroit,” Darko said. “I was kind of lost for those couple of years.”

“I have enough bad experience in NBA life,” the new New York Knick said. “I don’t think this can be worse than Detroit, so I just want to enjoy it and hope to have a winning season and do the best I can.”

Five international players were included in the top-ten NBA Draft busts in the last decade created by the Ball Don’t Lie blog at Yahoo Sports.

And you really can’t argue that <a href="http://www.interbasket.net/news/tag/yi-jianlian/"target="_self"title="Related Posts" >Yi Jianlian, Yaroslav Korolev, <a href="http://www.interbasket.net/news/tag/rafael-araujo/"target="_self"title="Related Posts" >Rafael Araújo, <a href="http://www.interbasket.net/news/tag/nikoloz-tskitishvili/"target="_self"title="Related Posts" >Nikoloz Tskitishvili, and <a href="http://www.interbasket.net/news/tag/darko-milicic/"target="_self"title="Related Posts" >Darko Miličić, have been very very very disappointing.

10. Yi Jianlian, Milwaukee Bucks (2007, 6th)
9. Kedrick Brown, Boston Celtics (2001, 11th)
8. Rodney White, Detroit Pistons (2001, 9th)
7. Yaroslav Korolev, Los Angeles Clippers (2005, 12th)
6. Rafael Araújo, Toronto Raptors (2004, 8th)
5. Adam Morrison, Charlotte Bobcats (2006, 3rd)
4. Nikoloz Tskitishvili, Denver Nuggets (2002, 5th)
3. Kwame Brown, Washington Wizards (2001, 1st)
2. Entire 2000 NBA Draft
1. Darko Milicic, Detroit Pistons (2003, 2nd)

Really it’s only a top-nine list because BDL included the entire 2000 NBA Draft as a complete bust (hey, Hedo Türkoğlu came out of that draft and is one of the best players of 2000 with Michael Redd).

Three of the players, Korolev, Tskitishvili, and Araújo, are no longer in the league. Only Yi and Miličić have remained in the league since they were first drafted.

Memphis Grizzlies center Darko Miličić, the infamous #2 pick in the 2003 NBA Draft, has been traded to the New York Knicks in exchange for Quetin Richardson.

The Memphis Grizzlies had the #2 overall pick in last night’s draft and selected center <a href="http://www.interbasket.net/news/tag/hasheem-thabeet/"target="_self"title="Related Posts" >Hasheem Thabeet of Tanzania. Even after unloading Milicic, the Grizzlies still have three international centers on their roster – Thabeet, <a href="http://www.interbasket.net/news/tag/marc-gasol/"target="_self"title="Related Posts" >Marc Gasol of <a href="http://www.interbasket.net/news/tag/spain/"target="_self"title="Related Posts" >Spain, and <a href="http://www.interbasket.net/news/tag/hamed-haddadi/"target="_self"title="Related Interbasket Posts" >Hamed Haddadi of <a href="http://www.interbasket.net/news/tag/iran/"target="_self"title="Related Posts" >Iran.

Miličić was infamously selected #2 overall in the 2003 NBA Draft, right after <a href="http://www.interbasket.net/news/tag/lebron-james/"target="_self"title="Related Interbasket Posts" >LeBron James, and before the likes of current NBA superstars Carmelo Anthony (#3), Dwyane Wade (#4), and Chris Bosh (#5).

That year’s draft had a record high 21 international players selected and also included David West (#18), Boris Diaw (#21), <a href="http://www.interbasket.net/news/tag/leandro-barbosa/"target="_self"title="Related Interbasket Posts" >Leandro Barbosa (#28), Josh Howard (#29), and Mo Williams (#47).

This will be Miličić’s fourth NBA team in his seven-year NBA career. He started out with the Detroit Pistons before being traded to Orlando then Memphis, and will now suit up for New York.

Recent reports say that Greek center Ioannis Bourousis has been offered a four-year contract with the San Antonio Spurs.

It comes as no surprise as the 7-0, 280lbs center has been making waves as of late. Most recently Ioannis averaged 12.5 points and 7.4 rebounds in 22 games with his Euroleague club Olympiakos Piraeus. The hulking center made his first All-Euroleague team and was named MVP of the 2009 Greek all-star game.

And before the ULEB, Bourousis played well in the 2008 Summer Olympics for the Greek National Team. In six Olympic games with Hellas, Boroussis averaged 11.7 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 1.0 steal filling in for Lazaros Papadopolous and underachieving Sofoklis Schortsianitis.

Apparently it’s just not the Spurs that is after the 25-year old pivot, Gazzetta.gr is also saying that both the Memphis Grizzlies and Cleveland Cavs are interested in Bourousis.

If the Memphis and Cleveland rumors have any truth, Bourousis will have to compete with international centers in both situations. In Cleveland, he’ll battle with Zydrunas Ilgauskas of <a href="http://www.interbasket.net/news/tag/lithuania/"target="_self"title="Related Posts" >Lithuania and with Anderson Varejao of <a href="http://www.interbasket.net/news/tag/brazil/"target="_self"title="Related Posts" >Brazil.

In Memphis, he would be a battle of four international centers vying for a roster spot come the 2009-2010 season. Including Bourousis, there is <a href="http://www.interbasket.net/news/tag/marc-gasol/"target="_self"title="Related Posts" >Marc Gasol (<a href="http://www.interbasket.net/news/tag/spain/"target="_self"title="Related Posts" >Spain), Darko Milicic (Serbia), and <a href="http://www.interbasket.net/news/tag/hamed-haddadi/"target="_self"title="Related Interbasket Posts" >Hamed Haddadi (<a href="http://www.interbasket.net/news/tag/iran/"target="_self"title="Related Posts" >Iran).

Edit: We should note that this is a rumor and we are aware that reports like this can be untrustworthy, especially coming from the Greek press. In the past, representatives have used reports of NBA contracts as a leverage in negotiation with their Euroleague clubs.

The Los Angeles Clippers grabbed the number one overall pick and will most-likely select Blake Griffin, the 6-10, 250lb, explosive power forward from Oklahoma.

<a href="http://www.interbasket.net/news/tag/ricky-rubio/"target="_self"title="Related Posts" >Ricky Rubio, who has been the consensus number two pick after Griffin, will likely remain there and be selected by the Memphis Grizzlies, whom got the second pick in the draft.

If Memphis does select Rubio, he will team up with fellow Spanish National Teammate <a href="http://www.interbasket.net/news/tag/marc-gasol/"target="_self"title="Related Posts" >Marc Gasol, as well as O.J. Mayo and Rudy Gay on an exciting Memphis squad. Rubio will compete for the spot with second year player Mike Conley, Jr.

If the Grizzlies’ roster remains the same as last season and they do take the 6-3 point guard phenom, the Memphis squad will have five international players on their roster; Rubio would join <a href="http://www.interbasket.net/news/tag/pau-gasol/"target="_self"title="Related Posts" >Pau Gasol‘s little brother, Hamed Haddadi (<a href="http://www.interbasket.net/news/tag/iran/"target="_self"title="Related Posts" >Iran), Marko Jaric (Serbia), and former number two pick Darko Milicic of Serbia.

Despite having the best chance for the #1 overall pick, the Sacramento Kings end up with the fourth overall pick. The Kings had a 25% chance at snagging the #1 pick. The Oklahoma City Thunder will pick third, after Memphis. The Washington Wizards dropped from having the second highest chance for the #1 pick to fifth.

In February 2006, after Darko rode the Detroit bench for 2 1/2 years, the Detroit Pistons unloaded the infamous Milicic (and <a href="http://www.interbasket.net/news/tag/carlos-arroyo/"target="_self"title="Related Posts" >Carlos Arroyo) to the Orlando Magic for what eventually turned out to be Rodney Stuckey, the 15th pick on the 2007 NBA draft, and Kelvin Cato. “Milicic is long gone, Arroyo has hardly played lately, and Stuckey might become the key to this series. (Stuckey’s) performance — good or bad — could change the complexion of this best-of-seven second-round NBA playoff matchup.”

You know, I get their point. However this type of media speculation bothers me and only serves to fuel flames that doesn’t need to be fanned. I don’t love or hate Darko, but who says that Orlando Magic would have even picked up Stuckey if they retained the pick anyways? The Magic could have easily have picked up Nick Young (#16), Sean Williams (17), Marco Bellineli (18), Javaris Crittenton (19), or Jason Smith (20) and we wouldn’t be having this conversation. I’m not asserting that Young, Williams, Bellineli are busts, not at all, I am just saying that it’s very convenient to make those jumps when a player does well.

Disgruntled Memphis Grizzly and Spaniard Superstar Pau Gasol was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers today (Discussion).

With one swift move, the LA Lakers have truly upgraded their lineup and their championsip prospects. They did so in two ways – obviously, with the addition of the 27-year old NBA All-star Gasol, and with the subtraction of the constantly underperforming and disappointing Kwame Brown, the Michael Jordan number one overall draft selection from 2001.

The Lakers also gave up promising guard Javaris Crittenton, veteran Aaron McKie, two future first-round draft picks and the rights to Pau’s brother and Spanish National Teammate, <a href="http://www.interbasket.net/news/tag/marc-gasol/"target="_self"title="Related Posts" >Marc Gasol.

Once Andrew Bynum returns from his knee injury and <a href="http://www.interbasket.net/news/tag/pau-gasol/"target="_self"title="Related Posts" >Pau Gasol learns the triangle offense, the Lakers jump from pretender to contender.

On the other side, this trade gives promising second-year man Rudy Gay room for development.

And it also gives the Memphis Grizzlies two of the biggest, most visible, disappointing draft picks in the current era- Kwame Brown and Darko Milicic in the front court. Not to mention Stromile Swift. Are they going to pick up <a href="http://www.interbasket.net/news/tag/nikoloz-tskitishvili/"target="_self"title="Related Posts" >Nikoloz Tskitishvili and Rafael Araújo too?

Is Darko Officially a Bust at 22-Years Old?
So whoever still believes in Darko Milicic‘s ability to succeed in the NBA, raise your hand.

Man, I just don’t know anymore. I was a believer once but being a seeing-is-believing kinda guy, I need him to show me a little more. I know the Serb center with the foul mouth is only 22 years old, but he really hasn’t shown much this season to warrant any excitement for his future.

Milicic is averaging the most minutes in his career yet his stats aren’t reflecting the extra tick. After a while, if one doesn’t fulfill their potential, it’s either a bad-scouting or a lack of effort. I firmly believe, from the few minutes that I saw him play under the Pistons his first year, Darko thought he was better than garbage time. And on that 2003-04 Piston team, he wasn’t.

Now it’s Darko’s sixth season, his third NBA team, and his last three seasons look too similar. It would different if we were seeing a small increases in production season-over-season, but that’s not the case.

Considering the players drafted after Darko (Carmelo, Wade, Bosh, and Josh Howard) and Sam Bowie was riddled with injuries during his career yet still managed to put up respectable numbers (14.7 points, 10.1 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks in one season with the Nets) — if Darko continues down this mediocre path, he could go down as the worst draft pick than the infamous Sam Bowie.

Tony Parker: European of the Year?
Tony Parker was just awarded the European Player of the Year given by Gazzetta dello Sport, an Italian Newspaper focused on sports. The award marks the first time in six years that Dirk Nowitzki didn’t win the award. Mr. Longoria beat Nowitzki by 17 points this year (128 to 111). <a href="http://www.interbasket.net/news/tag/andrei-kirilenko/"target="_self"title="Related Posts" >Andrei Kirilenko, who led Russia to the Eurobasket gold medal, finished third with 85 points. The jury that decides the award is made up of a total of 100 writers, coaches and players from 28 different countries.

This was Parker’s first Euroscar award, he finished 3rd in 2005. Had Nowitzki won again this year, he would have tied <a href="http://www.interbasket.net/news/tag/arvydas-sabonis/"target="_self"title="Related Posts" >Arvydas Sabonis‘s record with six EuroScar awards. Currently the German superstar is tied with Toni Kukoc, whom also has won five of these awards. Check out the list of winners here, along with second and third place finishers.

Andrew Bogut and Yi Jianlian
Milwaukee has quietly won three out of four (yeah it was against Philadelphia, Charlotte and Miami, but a win is a win!) and Andrew Bogut has played a large part in each of the wins. The Aussie center scored a season-high 25 points, including a short hook with 19 seconds remaining to seal a win against Charlotte.

In those four games, Bogut put up 15.2pts, 9.8 rebounds, 3 assists, and shot 53.1% from the field, all above his season averages of 12.1,pts, 8.8rebs, 2.2 asts and 50.6% FG.

On the other side of the coin, Yi Jianlian was either jinxed after winning NBA Rookie of the Month for December, by my comments last week that he could actually contend for Rookie of the Year honors, or a combination of both.

Since being awarded that honor on January 2nd, the same span that Bogut flourished, Jianlian hasn’t performed to expectations. In the last four games, the rookie from He Shan, <a href="http://www.interbasket.net/news/tag/china/"target="_self"title="Related Posts" >China has chipped in only 6.2 points, 6.7 rebounds, 1 block per game and shot 30.3% from the field, including an 0-7 performance yesterday against Philadelphia. His rebounding average was the only stat that saw improvement during that week.

More Andris Biedrins Love
And here’s out weekly Andris Biedrins love — the <a href="http://www.interbasket.net/news/tag/latvia/"target="_self"title="Related Posts" >Latvian center that just turned 21 last year has been leading the NBA in field goal percentage. AB is is currently way out in front of everyone at 65.4%, three full percentage points ahead of fellow center-of-the-future Andrew Bynum. THE current center of the future Dwight Howard is currently at third with 60.9%. Of the three, Biedrins is the oldest.

And I want to emphasize that Biedrins isn’t dunking everything or getting a ton of alley-oops lobs like Howard and Bynum. As of this writing, Dwight HOward leads the league in dunks and Bynum is #2. Where is Biedrins? All the way down at #36 with 27 dunks, tying his teammate, the 6-3 Monta Ellis.

Almost half of Dwight Howards made field goals (46.7% to be exact) are dunks (130 of 280). Same with Bynum, 48% of Bynum’s FGs have been dunks this year (80 of 166), while Biedrins dunk-to-FG ratio is at 16% (27 of 168). Watching Biedrins, there are times in which he can dunk the ball, but instead lays it in, but even so, not enough to even come close to being where Bynum or DHo are at.

The left-hander eastern European has a nice soft touch around the basket and picks his places. Many of his baskets come from rolling to the basket off a pick and roll or slipping in for offensive rebound tip-ins. Biedrins has a great sense around the hoop, great timing and springs off the ground faster than most small forwards.

Andris has seen his minutes steadily rise during the season, especially lately in which he has seen at least 23 minutes in the last ten games and has been averaging a double-double in that span 11.0 pts, 10.6 rebounds and 1.6 blocks. On the season, Biedrins is averaging 10.9 points, 9.7 rebounds and 1.6 blocks. Consistency, baby!

Who is the Top International NBA Dunker?
All this talk about dunks got me wondering which international NBA player has accumulated the most dunks this season. My immediate thoughts considering the height and minutes played, that <a href="http://www.interbasket.net/news/tag/yao-ming/"target="_self"title="Related Posts" >Yao Ming would be on top and Nowitzki would be somewhere near the top-five, but I found something much different…

Dunk Totals and Stats for the NBA season thus far (International Players):
1. Samuel Dalembert, Haiti/<a href="http://www.interbasket.net/news/tag/canada/"target="_self"title="Related Posts" >Canada 62 dunks (6th overall)
4. Andrei Kirilenko, Russia 29 (35th)
5. Andris Biedrins, Latvia 27 (36th)
5. Yi Jianlian, China 27 (36th)
7. Linas Kleiza, <a href="http://www.interbasket.net/news/tag/lithuania/"target="_self"title="Related Posts" >Lithuania 25 (44th)
8. DeSagana Diop, <a href="http://www.interbasket.net/news/tag/senegal/"target="_self"title="Related Posts" >Senegal 20 (59th)
9. Ronny Turiaf, <a href="http://www.interbasket.net/news/tag/france/"target="_self"title="Related Posts" >France 17 (69th)
10. Luol Deng, Sudan 15 (74th)

Source: CBS’s Dunk-O-Meter

Linas Kleiza is a nice surprise to be found on the list, considering his minutes and that he isn’t a seven-footer like 5 of guys ahead of him. Says a lot about the Lithuanians aggressiveness towards the basket and his ability to run the floor on the break.

No Dirk Nowitzki even in the top-100 of dunkers in the league? I find that a bit odd, I swear I’ve actually seen 5 of his dunks on highlights this year. Nowitzki is tied with Hilton Armstrong with 10 dunks and right above Julian Wright. Not looking at how many games he has played, that’s less than a dunk every three games.

Outside of Nowitzki’s pathetic dunk numbers, Dirk has slowly and surely brought his scoring touch back in the last month, as Josh HOward’s numbers have also returned to normal levels. In the last nine-games (Dallas has won eight), Dirk has put up 28.4 points per game, 10.2 rebounds, 3.9 assists and shot 48.4% from the field. That’s compared to his season averages of 22.2ppg, 8.6rpg, 3.8ast, and 47.3%.

Back to Golden State: One International In, One Out.
Late last week, the Golden State Warriors called up Serbian center Kosta Perovic from the NBDL. The 7-2 Perovic, who was the 38th overall selection in the 2006 NBA draft has yet to play for the Warriors. Kosta has been developing for the Bakersfield Jam in the NBDL. Perovic is looking forward to the cushier and more consistent surroundings of the NBA ” “We don’t have a practice facility (with the Jam), we practice one day at a high school, one day at the arena, and our lifting room is away from the gym on the other side of town, so it’s all spread out.” Perovic said.

Kosta had played 19 games this season for the Jam, and averaged 8.9 points (on 48.8% from the field), 5.9 rebounds, 1.4 blocks in 22 minutes a game.

One in, one out. Hard-working and all-around great guy Didier Ilunga (DJ) Mbenga was waived by the Golden State Warriors today. The 7-0, 255lb Congalese center played 16 games this season and was brought in by Don Nelson because the two had a great relationship in Dallas.

I’m sure Mbenga’s interesting path to the NBA was another factor that Nelson considered. Mbenga’s story is one that mimic those of other African NBA players such as Luol Deng.

Didier Mbenga was born in Zaire and his father was involved in the former Zaire’s government. When his father’s term was over, the reigning regime hunted the old government’s leaders, putting the Mbenga family on the run. The father died mysteriously to unknown causes, but many suspect the obvious.

DJ spent nine months on Hutu death row after being mistaken for a Tutsi, but eventually escaped with the help of a prison guard that was bribed by his brother. The Mbenga family had enough and escaped to <a href="http://www.interbasket.net/news/tag/belgium/"target="_self"title="Related Posts" >Belgium where they received political asylum and eventually, Belgian citizenship.

With the help of Belgian basketball legend and his mentor Willy Steveniers, Mbenga spent five years developing on several Belgian teams, moving from youth division to second division to the first division before finally signing with the Dallas Mavericks at the start of the 2004-05 season.

Mbenga signed a conditional-guaranteed contract on November 17th that would have become guaranteed tomorrow, Thursday. Unfortunately for the native of the Congo, backup point guard Troy Hudson’s career may be over, so they had to make room for another point guard so they brought in D-League star guard CJ Watson.

Clippers Call Superman
Guillermo Diaz is a 6-2 Puerto Rican combo-guard nicknamed “Superman” that has been toiling in the NBDL this season, until he was called up to the NBA yesterday. The 22-year old is espected to sign a 10-day contract after Brevin Knight had a minor injury and Richie Frahm was waived. Diaz played college basketball for the University of Miami, spending three seasons there before being named All-ACC second team and declared early for the NBA draft.

He was made the 52nd overall pick in 2006, but was eventually cut. Since then Diaz has bounced around the world playing basketball — Diaz spent the 2006-07 season with CEZ Basketball Nymburk, a club team in the Czech Republic, averaging 20.1 points, 3.1 rebounds and 3.3 assists in 15 games. In 2007, Diaz moved on to <a href="http://www.interbasket.net/news/tag/greece/"target="_self"title="Related Posts" >Greece, playing in five games with AEP Olimpiada Patron in the Greek League, putting up 13.0 points per game.

After being waived by the Clippers right before the start of this NBA season, Diaz has played 14 games for the Anaheim Arsenal and was averaging 16.6 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.3 assists in 33.1 minutes for his minor-league team before being recalled up by the Los Angeles Clippers.

Guillermo Diaz was the 100th player to be called up from the NBDL… well, technically both Diaz and CJ Watson were called up on the same day, and NBA.com didn’t make any distinction into who was the actual 100th call-up from the NBDL. It’s taken over 6 years for the NBA to reach bring 100 NBDL players into the league.

Immediately after Serbia’s loss to <a href="http://www.interbasket.net/news/tag/greece/"target="_self"title="Related Posts" >Greece 68-67 on day two of Eurobasket, an angry Darko Milicic went on a furious tirade against the three referees that oversaw the match. International journalists were there to witness almost a minute of Darko’s profanity-laced post-game interview that focused mainly on the Italian referee. Milicic utilized just about every offensive slur and denigrating sexual situation in insulting the official, the official’s mother, and if the official had a daughter, well Darko made sure to cover that base also.

Darko was fined 10,000 Euros by Fiba for his hate-filled, ill-mannered, and idiotic comments towards Italian Fabio Facchini, <a href="http://www.interbasket.net/news/tag/lithuania/"target="_self"title="Related Posts" >Lithuanian Virginijus Dovidavicius and Stelian Banica from Romania, the match officials. The fine was the maximum a player has ever been fined in a Fiba-sanctioned event. Serbia ended up without a win in the tournament, going 0-3.

Day three of Eurobasket 2007 saw several upsets that changed the face of the next round:

Israel 87: Serbia 83 (game thread)
Israel shocked Serbia today behind an excellent performance from Yaniv Green. Israel was the 16th and final team to qualify for EuroBasket.

Coming into the game, many believed that the size of the Serbs (specifically Darko Milicic) would punish the Israeli team in the paint. Enter Yaniv Green, who held down the middle, scored 26 points and pulled in 12 rebounds for Israel, including two free throws that gave Israel the lead for good with under a minute left. Green’s performance was doubly-important as the 6-9 forward was matched-up against his bigger opponent, in both size and name, 7-0 Serbian center Darko Milicic (18 points, 13 rebounds, 4 blocks). Yotam Halperin added 17 points for Israel. Milan Gurovic scored 19 points for Serbia.

<a href="http://www.interbasket.net/news/tag/lithuania/"target="_self"title="Related Posts" >Lithuania 84: <a href="http://www.interbasket.net/news/tag/germany/"target="_self"title="Related Posts" >Germany 80 (game thread)
In a battle of the two unbeatens in group C, Lithuania was able to squeeze out a close-win after almost forfeiting a 21-point lead against Germany. With 11 seconds remaining, Dirk Nowitzki hit two free-throws (after hitting a three the previous possession) to bring Germany within one, but an untimely offensive foul by Ademola Okulaja on Germany’s next possession closed out any chance for Team Germany. Nowitzki put up 28 points and 9 rebounds while Ademola Okulaja had 12 points and 7 rebounds. Darjus Lavrinovic led Lithuania with 18 points, Sarunas Jasikevicius added 15 points, 10 assists and 4 rebounds and Ramunas Siskauskas had 13 points and 6 rebounds.

Portugal 77: <a href="http://www.interbasket.net/news/tag/latvia/"target="_self"title="Related Posts" >Latvia 67 (game thread)
Andris Biedrins scored 14 points, grabbed a tournament-high 18 rebounds and blocked 3 shots for Latvia, but that wasn’t enough to overcome his team’s overall 27% from the field. On the other side, Portugal was an efficient 9-18 from three and 90% (20-22) from the free throw line. Portugal was led by forward Joao Santos who scored 14 points and had 8 rebounds, and Mário-Gil Fernandes had 14 points. For Latvia, Kristaps Janicenoks hit 4-6 from three, 9-10 from the free throw line and scored 22 points, but missed all five of his two-point attempts.

Even with the win, it did not guarantee Portugal a spot into the next round. <a href="http://www.interbasket.net/news/tag/croatia/"target="_self"title="Related Posts" >Croatia would have to defeat <a href="http://www.interbasket.net/news/tag/spain/"target="_self"title="Related Posts" >Spain for the Portuguese to advance, and if the Spanish beat Croatia, Latvia would move on.

<a href="http://www.interbasket.net/news/tag/slovenia/"target="_self"title="Related Posts" >Slovenia 67: <a href="http://www.interbasket.net/news/tag/france/"target="_self"title="Related Posts" >France 66 (game thread)
Slovenia continues to surprise, bringing their overall mark to 3-0 with an impressive win over France.

Slovenia led 67-65 with 0.1 seconds left. Tony Parker, the 2007 NBA Finals MVP, went to the free throw line with a chance to tie the game with two free throws, but was only able to convert one. France focused their defense on Jaka Lakovic (Lakovic only got one shot up; he missed), so his backcourt mate Domen Lorbek responded with 15 points (5-5 from the field). Matjaz Smodis added 15 points and 6 rebounds for the Slovenians. Despite missing the crucial free-throw, <a href="http://www.interbasket.net/news/tag/tony-parker/"target="_self"title="Related Interbasket Posts" >Tony Parker scored 25 points for Las Bleus and Ronny Turiaf had 13 points, 5 rebounds and 2 blocks.

Russia 61: <a href="http://www.interbasket.net/news/tag/greece/"target="_self"title="Related Posts" >Greece 53 (game thread)
Greece just couldn’t get their offense going against the Russians today and succumbed from 37% from the field and 58% from the free-throw line. Super Greek backcourt Dmitrios Diamantidis and Theo Papaloukas combined for 16 points, 9 turnovers and just 2 assists. Andrei Kirilenko collected 17 rebounds, 12 points and 5 turnovers for Russia, while JR Holden scored 17 points. V asillis Spanoulis led Greece with 12 points but shot just 3-9 from the field and 4-8 from the free throw line.

<a href="http://www.interbasket.net/news/tag/turkey/"target="_self"title="Related Posts" >Turkey 80: Czech Republic 72 (game thread)
The Turks got their first win over the tired-Czechs. Mehmet Okur and Hidayet Turkoglu led Turkey to a 15-2 start, and the duo finished with 16 points at the end of the first quarter. The Czechs fought back in the next quarter, to come within three, but another 15-0 run expanded the Turkish lead to 46-31 at the half.

CR made a couple more runs in the second half, but wouldn’t be able to overtake Turkey. Lubos Barton scored 22 points for the Cezch Republic. For Turkey, Memo Okur finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds, Turkoglu scored 22 points, had 5 rebounds and 5 turnovers. Ibrahim Kuatluay scored 17 points after being held to zero points yesterday by Germany.

Croatia 85: Spain 84 (game thread)
In a day of upsets, this was probably the biggest one. Marko Tomas hit a three with 3.1 seconds left and Rudy Fernandez couldn’t convert the final shot; lifting the Croatian National Team over the 2006 World Champions Spain.

Spain, had been unbeaten for not only the two games of EuroBasket, but for 28 straight international competitions going back. The win gave the Croatians the top seed coming out of Group B.

Rudy Fernandez had a chance to win the game, but his drive into the heart of the Croatian defense yielded no basket. As the Spanish team complained that Fernandez was fouled on the drive, the Croatians celebrated their win. The three Markos led the Croatian team: Marko Popovic scored 18 points, Marko Banic grabbed 9 rebounds (+12 points), and Marko Tomas passed for 4 assists in addition to hitting the game-winning three. Pau Gasol‘s 26 points led the Spanish, Rudy Fernandez added 14 points and 3 steals and Felipe Reyes had 10 points and 10 rebounds. With the win, Croatia will face Israel in the first round, while Spain will face Greece.

<a href="http://www.interbasket.net/news/tag/italy/"target="_self"title="Related Posts" >Italy 79: Poland 70 (game thread)
The stakes were high- the winner of this game would move on, the loser would go home. Poland finished the first quarter with a 16-14 lead, but Italy would capture the rest of the quarters, behind a strong second that included a 22-6 run. Marco Belinelli led Italy with 20 points and Andrea Bargnani went for 19 points and 7 rebounds. Lucasz Koszarek put up a double-double for the Polish, 10 points and 11 assists. Andrzej Pluta scored 15 points and Adam Wojcik had 12 and 6 rebounds. Massimo Bulleri added 10 points, 8 assists, and 6 rebounds for Team Italy.

With the completion of today’s games Latvia, the Czech Republic, Serbia and Poland have been eliminated from the tournament. The top three teams from the four groups move into two groups of six in the second phase, which starts in Madrid on Friday, September 7th, with the results from the first phase carrying over.
