Anderson Varejao looking for $10m/season

Sunday, September 30th, 2007

There’s a good reason as to why the Cavs and Brazilian forward/center Anderson Varejao are having difficulties coming to terms on a new contract. It’s because Varejao and his agent are reportedly asking for around $10m/year.

Now, if the numbers are correct, I believe that Varejao and his agent are going to have a lot of problems finding a team to give out that kind of money for a player of Varejao’s limited offensive abilities. Anderson is a good player and can fit into many NBA systems because of his effort and energy, but I don’t think anyone think he is worth $10m a year.

Maybe his agent thought that they could use the $7m/year that Memphis was rumored to have offered Varejao as leverage. What ever the rationale, $10m a year for the 25 year-old, 6-10 Brazilian is simply laughable. And if any team actually takes them up on it will surely come to regret it.

Anderson Varejao is entering his fourth year in the NBA. He averaged a career-high 6.8 points, 6.7 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal last season. The Cavs reached the NBA Finals for the first time in franchise history last season and in addition to putting out his usual energy, Varejao put up 6 points and 6 rebounds a game during the course of the playoffs.
