Top 500 NBA Players of All-Time (SLAM)

2011/04/02 8:16 am 266181 132 comments

SLAM Magazine is just asking for trouble.

If you’ve ever discussed any top-3, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, whatever-list online, you’re going to get some heated discussions.

(Check out Interbasket’s Top-Five NBA Players of All-Time as voted on by reporters)

Well, SLAM went ahead and listed their top 500 NBA players of all time.

Ranking the 500 greatest players in NBA history? And listing all of them with their years played, teams they played for, career averages, a photo and a sharply written mini-bio? Who would take on such a project? Your friends from SLAM, of course. Credit for the idea, and the rough list we built off of, goes to a gentleman named Al Stark and his cousin, Rick. Al is a SLAM subscriber and hoop fanatic while Rick works for our parent company. Together, they approached me about doing a list of the top 1000 (!) players of all time. That was too much, so we compromised on 500.

You think that Shaquille O’Neal as the fourth best player ever is causing a stir online? Wait until you see that Joe Graboski (#487) is listed seven spots ahead of P.J. Brown (#494) – you’ll blow your top.

O.K., raise your hands if you’ve ever heard of Tom Gola (#164) or Andy Philip (#169). O.K., so you’re a basketball-reference guy, keep your hands up if you’ve seen either play (either in person or grainy footage).

And is Carlos Boozer really the 206th best player ever?  Without going through the list entirely, that just feels wrong.

Props and respect for SLAM for putting this together – it must have been as fun as it was difficult.

Here’s the full list:

Growing up a Detroit Pistons fan, I could be biased, but Bill Laimbeer is severely underrated in this list (#235). He’s rated behind Jason Richardson, Orlando Woolridge, Darrell Griffith, and Rip? I don’t think so. Lambs was an impact player.

And whether he is or isn’t the 420th best player…. I’m happy to see James “Buddha” Edwards (#420) on the list.  What do you think?  Who is missing?  Who doesn’t deserve to be on the list? Discuss the top-500  in our forum or add your comment below.

  • THERES NOOO WAY ALLEN IVERSON IS BEHIND ALL THOSE BUMS!! AI IS BETTER THAN THOMAS, KIDD, STOCKTON, PAYTON, I EXPECTED IVERSON TO BE AT LEATS 28. HORRIBLE ARTICLE U ALL HATERS

  • Juwan Davis

This is ridiculous!!!! LeBron at 31! he’s at least 16-8, Yao Ming ahead of Chris Bosh, Tim Duncan ahead of Kobe & Bird….smh

  • Anyone hating on this list needs to create their own list of the TOP 500 PLAYERS EVER so everyone can hate on it. This took a lot of time, research, and a great knowledge of the history of the game. If you don’t agree with a few rankings who gives a damn. It wouldn’t be fun if we couldn’t have INTELLIGENT CONVERSATIONS on things like this. Much respect to the compilers.

  • Something tells me that Juwan is a Heat fan lol. Overall I think the list is pretty good. There a few that I would shift around, D-Wade whould be above LeBron imo, but thanks for compiling the list and posting it for free online. Can’t wait to pick up the issue and look at all the info you guys provided

  • What about Kevin Durant & Blake Griffin!

  • I agree with some of this list, I think Kobe deserves to be ahead of shaq, Kobe has more skill in his game and of course more championships. Wilt Chamberlain defiantly doesn’t deserve number 2. He was a 7 foot black man against short white men, put him in this era and he’ll get shut down. Dirk deserves top 20 honors, Kobe should be ahead of tim, Magic should be top 5.

  • This was a really good list. I’m sure it took lots of thought and time to construct. One thing that I did disagree with though is Ron Artest being ranked ahead of Manu Ginobli.

  • agreed with Nick Dirk now is top 20. He is in the 15-20 range

  • i think that if tim duncan was at numer ten and larry bird would be at numer eight and kobe be at number nine they would have got the top ten correct

  • 55. Dirk??? Are u serious. Top 25 easy. 105.. Melo??? Wow. Then u got a guy in robert horry… 355??? The guy has 7 rings. 86. D howard?? And wtf is C.lattner doin on this list?? What a bust

  • There is no possible way that LeBron James deserves a spot above Clyde Drexler. Clyde is easily in the top 10 of all time. SLAM now has zero credibility in my book.

  • Ok… that Sam Bowie is even on the list is a travesty, but to rank him above Kevin Duckworth is absolutely disgraceful. I’m just going to stop reading this list now. It was obviously compiled by people with questionable basketball knowledge.

  • I might be wrong but I think Bernard King isn’t on the list that’s a shame if I’m right. @Sean Kevin Durant, and Blake Griffin are both still early in there careers they can’t be considered on any list yet because two things can happen in a players career he can get better, and better or he can just fall down hill like McGrady did which is a shame because he’s one of my favorites.

  • Where is Drazen Petrovic, I really think he deserves a spot… This is a guy that had courage and lead the nets into the playoffs. He was better than any of the guys from 480-500

  • Is THIS IN AN ORDER BECAUSE IT DOESNT LOOK LIKE IT.

  • Good list, but some issues. Magic should be higher than Shaq, more championships, more regular season MVP’s and same playoff MVP’s in a more competitive era. Oscar Robertson should be lower, 1 MVP and 1 championship. Everyone else in the top 10 have multiple championships, or MVP’s or both.

  • shaq isn’t that good but i think you guys got it figured out.

  • wade is waaaay higher

  • Shaq is the most dominate player ever in the game. It takes double teams evern triple teams to make sure he doesnt score. If it wasnt for his legs he would have won a title on any team.

  • Kobe should be higher.

  • I understand everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but some of the rankings here are bizarre. Ron Artest ahead Manu Ginobili? Ron Artest ahead of Amare Stoudemire?!?!? How can you guys actually believe Ron Artest has had a better career than Amare Stoudemire?? Amare is probably head for the HOF. Theres NO chance Ron Artest ends up there.

  • Have you ever thought about creating an e-book or guest authoring on other sites? I have a blog based on the same topics you discuss and would love to have you share some stories/information. I know my audience would value your work. If you are even remotely interested, feel free to send me an e-mail.

  • At lease, everyone agree that M.J is the no 1…!!!!

  • This list is based 100% on the writers opinion. None of these are statistically in order. Duncan before Kobe? Kidd before Garnett and Lebron??? Are you insane. Jason Kidd has had a great career putting him in the top 40 I would say but not above Garnett or James. And I don’t even have to say anything about Duncan before Kobe. Kobeand Lebron should both be in the top 8 all time. Haters talk trash about Lebron not having any rings but there isn’t a player ever to play the game that can finish at the rim as good as James

  • Also, Steve Nash at 50 and Dwayne Wade at 49? Wade has the talent of a top 25 all time and has a ring that he won almost entirely by himself with the help of an aged shaq. He deserves a lot more credit than what you give him. And there is no way Jason Kidd is ranked high than Steve Nash. Nash has 2 MVP’s whether he entirely deserved them or not he still has them. He has just gotten better with age and at 37 is still playing at an all-star level whereas Kidd has dropped off the last 3 or 4 years. I say Kidd should be 40 and Nash somewhere 35-40. Another extremely wrong player is Chris Paul at 107, he is as good if not better than Nash ever was in his career but he is still young and has not led a team deep into the playoffs. He still deserves a top 75 bid for sure. The last player I believe was a complete miss is Zach Randolph. 273? Come on, the playoff performance he had this past season carrying a team of nobodies should put him much higher. Don’t also forget he is almost a for sure 20 and 10 on any given night throughout his entire career. He should high than Lamar Odom in my opinion. Yes Odom is probably the best 6th man to play the game but not better than randolph in any way. Randolph should crack the top 100

  • vagina magnet

larry bird should be number 1

  • billy bamm

billy bamm is the best player i ever saw, handle like maravich ,quick like ai.fly like the hawk.shoot like a white boy,saw him score 55 in a playground off a clyde in the day, spin a ball on his nose like a seal, need a parachute to come back down, clean sneakers, old school high cons, blue eyez, yellow hair in a five foot fro, drank cool not cold water, none of this gatormade shiete, made pearl go home, made bing go into politics, taught sam jones the bank shot, the bestEVER billy bamm

  • Bill Russell should be #1. We always talk about “Oh MJ has 6 rings. Kobe doesn’t have 6″. 11 NBA Titles in 13 years. Nothing even close to that will ever be repeated

  • where is brad daughtery

  • Tj Fugate

uhhhh , whats this list based on ? If its skill Lebron is easily top 7 !!!

  • Larry Bird Lover

Larry Bird is a million times the player Shaq will ever be! In my book, Larry is the best there is. An explanation, you ask? They call him The Legend. Is that enough for ya? I live in Paoli, IN. That is about a 10-mile drive from French Lick, Larry’s hometown. I drive by his house (which is now for sale) all of the time.

  • I can’t find KWAME BROWN and MICHAEL OLOWOKANDI. This is a crazy list.

  • Drazen Petrovic is definetly the guy that deserves at least to be in first 300 .. This list is funny…

  • Where is D,Rose?????

  • really u put rodman in top 50 over kemp whos only 150

  • I must criticize. There’s way too many blunders in this list, I believe constructing the top 500 is an extreme process but still… No petrovic, no Darryl Dawkins, mark Jackson at 160!!!!! The man has 3rd most assists all time! Bruce Bowen 247!?! Robert horry 355!?! What is goin on? Talk about getting snubbed, some serious career accomplishments have been severely overlooked here. the lower it goes it turns into a free for all, like the player was just listed upon crossing the author’s mind, not by systematic evaluation. I give credit to the compilation, but I don’t value the effort here.

  • How can labrick James be that high. No way he is above drexler, wade, sorry, etc.r

  • James should be between 50-100.good player but 0 rings. He will never make the top10. In my opinion.

  • Um… why is Kobe ahead of LeBron. And why is Tim Duncan ahead of LeBron, I know Duncan’s better than Kobe and all but LeBron.

  • What is CP3 doing at 107? He should be in the top 50. Melo at 105? He should be at the top 30. C’mon.

  • 1. kobe(he has played against better defensive players, shot better from 3 even though it was pulledback 3 ft, and had to play vs the zone
    2. jordan
    3. magic
    4. bird
    5. kareem
    6. Wilt
    7. hakeem
    8. shaq
    9. erving
    10. duncan

dwade is above lebron, melo, d12 should be top 50…..AI is top 20, pierce is top 30, dirk top 20

  • Manute Bol should be in top 100 if not top 50. Dont believe me? Look up Manute Bol. Block party on YouTube. He changed the game man!

  • numbers 3-500 are completely out of order, kevin garnett and dirk are top 20

  • Dwight howard way way way to high, vince carter could be higher. Tim duncan to high garnett could move up to almost top 20. and shaq shoul not be 4 th. Shaun Kemp 150 th should be higher! Where is d rose, chris paul and him should both hover aroun 125. Bill Lambier should be higher

  • Mj not definately number 1 Bill russel and Chamberlain are right there, feel sorry for TMac carrer went downhill. Blake griffen, kevin Durant, D rose even stephen curry n’ Russel westbrook could earn a spot in this over okafor, kaman and gooden. Agree artist two high. Gilbert Arenas could be higher

  • dale peterson

george gervin is in the top 10

  • I just ordered this issue (not sure how I missed it last year); too bad it doesn’t come with the subscription. SLAM did a nice job with some players (e.g., it is good to see Rick Barry, Nate Thurmond, and Dennis Rodman getting their due respect), but they absolutely blew it with some players. No way Bill Walton is only 74. And Sam Jones all the way down at 65? Silliness.

  • george gervin is way too low

  • Not really fair to compare players who have not finished their careers.

this terrible list luke jackson doesent even deserve to be on it

  • I have to be honest, I highlly disagree with different aspects of this list! I feel that Kobe Bryant is the 2nd greatest player ever to pick up a bsaketball! BElieve me I can defend myself for hours! I think that Magic and Bird should be ranked 3rd and 4th due to their great skill and contributions to the game. Wilt, Shaq,Russell, and Abdul-Jabbar are ranked way to high. As centers they anre not as important as Magic and Bird,, and of course Kobe. I also don’t see Kevin Martin on this list? What’s up with that!

  • By the way Bill Sharman is very under rated. I think he should be in the top 45. He was the first true shooting gaurd ever to play! The guy won 4 championships.

  • I also think that Adrian Dantley are ranked way too low. These guys were scoring machinesd. They should at east be in the top 65 not 82 and 83. Also Walt Bellamy is ranked way to high.

  • THe reason why I think Russell is over rated is because he had the greatest supporting cast a guy can dream of. Like for example Sharman, Cousy, the Joneses, Heinson, and don’t forget Hondo. Hondo was a beast.

  • I have to say though I am pretty disgusted that KKobe was ranked 10th. Kobe is amazing. The only guy that can top Kobe is Jordaan. The guy won 5 rings, 4 all-star mvps, only one 1 MVP bust should have won way more. He won two Finals MVP,s is on his way to a 3rd scoring title… I mean come on. He has been on the All NBA and All NBA defensive teams nearly 10 times in his career. He has played the last 4 years of his career, with so many injuries and still finds a way, and will to win. He is so clutc, has hit so many game winners!

  • I rest my case about Kobe.

  • must have took a lot of time pretey nice list but duncan must be your hero

  • pierce 77????? second most pts in celtics history and yeah higher than bird

  • I was wondering this is the top 500 of all time right ? Well I was wondering if Kevin Durant was anywhere on this list or if not should he be put on this list

  • KOBE BRYANT HAS TO BE #1 IN MY OPINION IF EVERYONE IS GOING BY STATS HE IS #1

  • james is way to high on this list what all has he done? anyone can score.

  • This is the worst list ive ever seen vince carter should be way better that 99

  • Mateen Cleaves

WHY AM I NOT ON THERE??? I can school any of these players…

  • Lebron isn’t any higher because everybOdy ahead of him has rings!

  • This list is a joke. To really get down to the bottom and post an accurate top 500 would take years. For example the NFL network spends about 5-6 months putting together their top 10 lists which are always pretty accurate. Throwing together a top 500 in the NBA is flawed through and through. Nobody should take this list very seriously. Shaq above Larry Bird, Kobe, and Jerry West? Lol

    Muggsy bogues!!!!!!!!!!

  • Wow no Kevin Durant no derrick rose wth

  • STOP SAYING DWAYNE WADE SHOULD BE HIGHER. He is not better then lebron AT ALL. He doesnt even produce all the time and just an ok shooter. My GOSH! Kareem should be higher then shaq. Also kobe should be a bit higher and whoever said laitner shouldnt be on the list YOUR WRONG. CHECK THE STATS NITWIT! HES NOT A BUST EITHER! oh yah, Manute Bol should not be on the list. hes a good shot blocker and all but he couldnt score worth the crap.

  • oh yah wheres DURANT? hes at AT LEAST in the 200s

  • I meant no to the list…

Paul pierce should be higher and Larry bird is better

  • I think rondo should be in this!

  • ewing isnt that far down, magic and bird are top five players, shaq is definetly not a top 10 player, melo is higher up, dirk at 55 thats ridiculous, and d-wade and penny are higher up

  • if MJ isnt number 1 on any list then that person should be slapped in the face

  • my top 10….

    PG. Magic Johnson
    SG. Michael Jordan
    SF. Julius Earving
    PF. Larry Bird
    C. Wilt Chamberlain/Kareem Abdul Jabaar (never saw any of them play but I think theyre the two best centers in the history.)

Like comment plz wesely comfirms this to and bill scottamye and Terry porter am a college athlete thanks and by la’uhmbrai bullister bye

  • Paul Peirce should be 40-45, kg 15-20, rondo 70-80, i am not a coby fan. He’s gotta be top five. I cant believe people arnt thing the same thing. He accomplished more than bird. this is coming from a celts fan. but that must be a pain in the ass to make a list this big. depending on your age, you must struggle with only going by stats, as apposed to watch the player… well .. play. So props to you for trying your best. i would want to change things in my own list, im sure. Peirce will be top 12 scorer of all time in two years. Most people can’t stand peirce. but he’s the soul of the celtics. much like larry bird was. veeeeerrry similar. He is very important to the nba.

  • 1 Michal jordan 2 magic johnson 3 larry bird 4 julius erving 5 wilt chamberlain 6 kareem aboul-jabbar 7 hakeem olajuwon 8 oscar robertson 9 isaiah thomas 10 karl malone 11 bill russel 12 scottie pippen 13 patrick ewing 14jerry west 15 john stockton

  • Why is Carmelo Anthony and Chris Paul in the 100s?

  • They forgot Gail Goodrich?

  • Anthony Kekula

    Carmelo Anthony 105???

  • Where is Kevin Durant. He deserves top 30. But I agree with a lot of this

  • If this is a list of greatest NBA players, then Connie Hawkins doesn’t belong. He never panned out too well in the nba. Sprewell needs to be waaay higher. Mutombo and and Laimbeer are way too far down also.

  • Chris Neale

Timmy ahead of Kobe and Larry? Kobe and Larry are top 5 guys. What is LeBron doing at 31? King James deserves to be in the top 10. What is Shaq doing at number 4? He isn’t even a top 10 guy. Where is Durant,D Rose,Blake Griffin, and Russell Westbrook? Robert Horry at 355? He deserves to be in the top 100. Steve Nash is better than Wade, J- Kidd Payton, and Iverson. He won 2 MVP awards and makes everyone better. And what is Walt Bellamy doing at 51? He shouldn’t even be in the top 100. And Wilt ahead of Russell? Russell is a destructive defender and like Nash, he makes everyone better. Magic and West should be ahead of Oscar. Not a very good list.

  • Chris Neale

I was a little too harsh. It must have taken a lot of work. It could be a lot better but it is decent.

  • Oh. The New ranking (2013 JULY 1)
LeBRON James is rank no. 1 or He is The Greatest Player Of All Time Ever in Whole3 Universe .. Fallow by MJ.

  • I think Dennis Rodman should be no. 1, i mean c’mon!

  • lenny wanker

LeBron should be higher than 30 he should be 3

  • Derrick rose should be top 250
where the hell is he at

  • Aaron Tyler

Allen Iverson should be #1,he schooled Jordan inevery way and besides, all Jordan can do is hangtime. Also,Isaih Thomas should be higher too.#AI3 #DETROIT3TITLES
