Asian-American Jeremy Lin signs with Golden State Warriors

The Golden State Warriors have signed local-star and NBA Summer League phenom Jeremy Lin to a multi-year deal.

The undrafted Asian-American player has been a lightning rod for the Dallas Mavericks during the NBA summer league, quickly winning over fans with his fearlessness, on-court IQ, flashy moves, and deceptive quickness.

“I think my style of play fits better in the NBA game,’’ Lin said. “It’s a little more up and down. (Summer League) has been a great experience. The more I went through the process the more I gained confidence that I could play at this level and now I’m confident I can play here and I know I belong. It’s a matter of proving it now.’’

After a great showing that surprised everyone but Lin, the 6-3, 21-year old guard had been courted by his summer league team, the Dallas Mavericks, as well as the 2010 NBA Champion Los Angeles Lakers.

We’re just trying to sort out the best roster fit, the best situation for Jeremy.” Lin’s agent Roger Montgomery said.

That team turned out to be the Golden State Warriors.

Ivy League Success
Previously, Lin played four years at Harvard where he became one of the Ivy League’s best players ever.

After each season, Lin’s NBA stock grew as he piled up amazing feats and accomplishments while leading the Crimson to levels the Ivy League School was unfamilar with on the basketball court.

Under Lin’s tenure, Harvard defeated Boston College, their first victory over a nationally-ranked team to hitting a buzzer-beater in a triple-overtime win over William & Mary.

Harvard basketball enjoyed the program’s winningest season in 2009-10, as the team recorded 21 victories and qualified for the postseason for the first time since 1946.

Lin was named All-Ivy League selection three times and was a finalist for the Bob Cousy Award for best point guard in College Basketball. This from a player that inexplicably wasn’t offered a Division I scholarship – after leading Palo Alto High to the Division II State Title and voted Northern California DII Player of the Year.

After no interest from his first choice Stanford, Lin chose Harvard, the United State’s oldest university. Harvard does not offer athletic scholarships.

A Couple of Firsts
When and if Jeremy Lin takes the court, he will be the first Ivy League player in the NBA since 2003 and Lin would be the first Asian-American player in the modern NBA era, the first being Japanese-American player Wat Misaka.

The San Francisco Bay Area has the largest concentration of Asians in the United States, and no doubt Lin will be a fan favorite and fill seats as he did in college.

Lin, who grew up in nearby Palo Alto to Taiwanese parents, left Harvard as the only Ivy League player in history to record 1,450 points (1,482), 450 rebounds (494), 400 assists (406) and 200 steals (225).
