The 2004 Olympic champion and the MVP of the last two FIBA Americas Championships, Scola is now out of contract in the NBA after another solid campaign with the Houston Rockets.

With the Texas club having missed out on the play-offs, Scola has taken an early holiday but he took time away from the sun and fun to speak to La Nacion in Buenos Aires.

“I don’t know with which team I will play next season, nor what could happen with being a free agent,” he said. “But what I do have clear in my mind is that I will be at the World Championship with Argentina.

“I am not worried about injuries with regards to my future career.

“Life does not change because you become a free agent. My wish is to play with the national team and that is what I will do because I feel it as an Argentinian sportsman.

The fact that Scola did not reach the post-season with Houston means he has additional time to rest up for Turkey, where Argentina will play in Group A against Serbia, Australia, Germany, Angola and Jordan.

Playing with Argentina will also help him be in top form when next season tips off in the NBA.

“Moreover, the difference with other players is that I have a big break in the NBA and when I lose my physical form, it takes me a lot of work to recover it,” he said. To be with the national team helps me. This is what I’ve done for the whole of my career.

“I see no reason why that should change, whether I’m in the NBA or anywhere else in the world.”
