Nowitzki: 2nd international player to score 20,000 pts
Dirk Nowitzki scored 30 points last night in the Maverick’s 100-95 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, making the 7-0 German the 34th NBA player in history to score 20,000 points in their career.
With the feat, Nowitzki becomes the first European player to score 20,000 points, and just the second international NBA player to score 20,000 career points.
With 20,014 points, Nowitzki sits at #2 on the list right behind NBA legend Hakeem Olajuwon with 26,946 points. Another German player, Detlef Schrempf is 3rd all-time with just 15,761 points while Nowitzki’s buddy Steve Nash is 4th all-time with 14,186 career points.

Nowitzki reached the plateau in 876 games, faster to 20,000 points than players like Kevin Garnett (975), Clyde Drexler (967), and Alex English (903)
Despite what the NBA likes to push, Interbasket doesn’t consider Tim Duncan as an international player. No Dominique Wilkins, Wally Szczerbiak, Patrick Ewing, or Ben Gordon do not count even though they were born in other countries.
Interbasket defines “international” on a case-by-case basis using several factors such as birth country, schooling, when they came to the United States, whether they represented their country or the USA, languages spoken, amongst many other factors.
