After playing for three different teams the last three seasons, a summer of frustration trying to find a team to play for, and a fallout with his eventual last team, the Memphis Grizzlies, Iverson is apparently done looking.
Iverson was an unrestricted free agent after playing just three games with the Memphis Grizzlies this season. Iverson left the team earlier this month over disagreements about playing time.
In Iverson’s retirement statement, it seems as if the star guard is leaving the door open for comeback, “I still have tremendous love for the game, the desire to play, and a whole lot left in my tank. I feel strongly that I can still compete at the highest level.” Iverson said in the statement.
The former NBA MVP has officially been without an NBA team since November 17th when he was waived by the Grizzlies.
Yahoo Sports’ Marc Spears was told by Iverson’s personal manager Gary Moore that the 34-year old superstar is planning on retiring. Spears announced Iverson’s retirement on his Twitter.
One of the NBA’s best little men ever
The 6-0 (1.83m) Iverson was selected with the number one pick in the star-studded 1996 NBA Draft by the Philadelphia 76ers. That draft included players like Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash, Ray Allen, Žydrūnas Ilgauskas, Stephon Marbury, Jermaine O’Neal, Peja Stojaković, Shareef Abdur-Rahim, and Antoine Walker.
Iverson was honored as the NBA Rookie of the Year in 1996–97 season and finished his career as a ten-time NBA All-Star which included the All-Star MVP awards in 2001 and 2005.
The 2000-01 season was Iverson’s golden year. He led the Philadelphia 76ers to the NBA Finals in 2001, the same season in which he was named the league’s MVP, and also led the league in scoring with 31.1 points per game.
He would lead the NBA in scoring four times, 1998–99, 2000–01, 2001–02 and 2004–05 , over his certain Hall of Fame career.
Iverson spent ten successful seasons in Philadelphia before being traded to Denver. Iverson would play two full seasons with the Nuggets before being sent to the Detroit Pistons for Chauncey Billups.
For both his faults and strength, Allen Iverson always stuck to his guns – in good and in the bad. This last chance with the Grizzlies may prove, ultimately, his own undoing. Check out this great article on Allen Iverson at Yahoo!
